What would be the fear of "worsening"?

Discussion

At first I thought that extinction meant the fear of something getting worse, the earth, the people, anything, than realised it only meant apocalypses, catastrophies and big stuff like this

So what would be the fear of things getting worse? The fear of hurting someone irreversibly? The fear of seeing someone change? Indusing a mental trauma to someone(a little personal) or seeing someone get it? It's not about the judgment of others or observations, it's personally seeing things just getting worse and being helpless to stop it

Does it fit with the corruption or extinction or anything else?

Hurting someone irreversibly? Maybe Desolation, it is themed around pain

Change, depends on what your afraid of there. If your afraid of them being different because its unfamiliar than 1. that's unhealthy and 2. stranger

Seeing and Powerlessness is The Eye

Once you get into season 5, it shows more abstract interpretations and some more psychological and social representations of the fears

Powerlessness is Web, explicitly. Certain abilities to do with the Eye use powerlessness but only as a tool to make you afraid that someone knows you.

Pretty sure OP's version of Extinction falls under web, since the thing that makes it terrifying is that you can't stop it.

What you have described basically fits a lot of the fears.

The question of what a fear fits into isn’t about the style or shape of the fear, it’s about what about it scares you

This is a perfect way to say it, my fear of drowning/being deep under water comes from the fear of being crushed by all the water above you which fits the deep, whereas I feel for most people ocean/water based fears are based more around the vast.

Totally get this. Drowning- ocean or debt, doesn't matter- is very buried. Maybe being afloat and seeing nothing but water is closer to vast ("Enjoy ocean blue!" Lol). But great way to sum up why the rituals weren't working! Just too knotted together.

There's a couple of angles to come at this I think, and it's more about the specifics of how things are carrying out.

The fear of hurting someone else or others (so not being able to trust yourself/doubting yourself/hating yourself) would maybe fall under the stranger - not seeing yourself as a person you can recognize.

Or if the thoughts are overwhelming in their nature, persistent, it could be paranoia caused by the web.

If it's decay, even conceptually, you can always tie that to the corruption.

And if you revel in the worsening, then probably the desolation as I feel like nihilism lines up well.woth them. The world is going to hell and I'm a part of it is very desolation to me.

So as always in TMA there are many answers, and also no answers.

Worsening? The fear that people are actually going to reelect Trump despite being a convicted rapist and indicted for federal crimes. Every day that the polls show him in the lead, my fear of worsening grows.

The fear of everything going to shite forever is called being British :-P

Well from my understanding the extinction isn't just the fear of humanity's annihilation but of sudden unstoppable change which definitely fits permanent damage and worsening but tbh like most things it can fit in many domains. Like the desolation, hunt, slaughter or even the stranger depending on specifics

When I think “worsening” I think of decay, so maybe corruption?

I think it might fit with the desolation? Usually the desolation is characterized by fire, but it is really just the fear of loss and pain, especially when it is unexpected.

I’m going to be honest, that fits pretty much any fear depending on how you interpret it. Nobody’s scared of things getting better, after all.

Me when things improve: 😱

probably the Desolation. Its main area is the complete destruction of everything you are/own. The fear of everything worsening could be equated to a slowly spreading fire that you can smell but not see.

I see that as corruption but it would be different for everyone about what they find scary about it.

Strange that nobody suggested The Buried. Pressuring anxiety over something beyond your control? Tightens its hold until it's so bad you're stuck and can't do anything? Pretty much The Buried to a T.

The way you describe it is almost certainly the Web, due to the helplessness at the core of all of these fears. That said, I'd wager that these are complex enough to be shared, the blurry edges between the fears.

The Spiral would love the feeling of inevitability, don't think about what you can do to live your life in uncertain times, just give in, nothing you can salvage matters anyway. Do not trust what is said by the It-is-lies.

The desolation would find the panic, the physical burn in your body thinking about these things so, very, delectable. Keep dreaming dear, listen to the spiral, he's here to help

The extinction is yet unformed, not fully, but I'm sure at its edges with terminus, the stranger, and the lonely, it can see far ahead of you, how every relationship collapses, will you recognize the new ones? Will it matter? You can't ever be safe, least of all in the mirror

Do not feed them, let the fears pass, grow, rest. they don't survive that very well.

Yesn't

Decay should absolutely be a fear domain. Maybe in tmp?

I think spiral for sure

I vote corruption. The statement of Jane Prentiss was very much like this. About how she wanted to be a good person, but all her friends called her toxic. The Hive told her she was beautiful as she was. So, she just rotted.

Fears aren't black or white, they can share concepts and they interlock with each other to form a big mass of awfulness. Even some of the "clearly this one fear" things could probably be twisted to fit another. You got burned and your life was ruined? Clearly Desolation. Buuut what if you get a face surgery for your scars and now you can't actually recognize yourself in the mirror? Seems a bit Strange, don't it? Hell, the sea shares two fears that are otherwise polar opposites: The Vast, with how big it is, and the Buried, in case you happen to drown. I guess The Dark could be down there too, where no natural light reaches.
