Serie A relegation battle: Empoli in trouble before final day

Sassuolo and Salernitana have been relegated to Serie B, while Empoli are one point below Udinese and Hellas Verona and will host Roma in the final matchday next week.

Empoli are in serious danger of being relegated after a 1-1 draw against Udinese on Sunday. It was a dramatic match at the Bluenergy Stadium. Mbaye Niang had given Empoli the lead from the spot at minute 90, but another penalty kick, scored by Lazar Samardzic at minute 104, after minutes of tension on the touchline, allowed the Bianconeri to earn a vital point.

Udinese have 34 points, one more than Empoli and just as many as Hellas Verona, who visit already relegated Salernitana on Monday.

This means a victory will allow the Gialloblu to secure survival with a game to spare.

Sassuolo lost 2-0 to Cagliari today, allowing the Sardinians to secure Serie A survival and sending the Neroverdi to Serie B after Frosinone’s win over Monza.

To sum it up, four teams are still involved in the race for survival and one will go to Serie B, following Salernitana and Sassuolo. Verona can already reach their target on Monday with a win over Salernitana at the Stadio Arechi.

Empoli will host Roma next week, while the other two teams involved in the race, Frosinone and Udinese, will meet at the Stadio Stirpe in the final round.

If two teams finish level on points, a playoff tie will determine the third team going to Serie B.
