Between the Lions is an Emmy Award-winning, PBS children's television show that focuses on phonics and early reading skills in an entertaining format featuring puppetry, animation, live action, and plenty of music. Lion puppet parents Theo and Cleo, with some help from their children Lionel and Leona, run the local library for human and animal patrons alike, vowing always to be helpful, designated readers who never eat their customers. Each of season one's 30 episodes begins with the Lion family reading a story--anything from classic Greek myths, to Old West stories and tongue twisters--with animated pages that spring to life and spark the imagination of young reader Lionel and his pre-school-age sister Leona. Click, the ever-helpful computer mouse, often clicks and drags a main character from the featured story right into the library where it interacts with the Lion family and helps take reading, imagination, and comprehension to a whole new level for the young lions as well as young viewers . Lots of fast-moving, regular segments punctuate each episode--there's the animated "Adventures of Cliff Hanger" where the hero is perpetually hanging from a branch on the side of a cliff and must use his decoding skills to read a survival manual and save himself, "Martha Reader and The Vowelles" where vowel sounds are celebrated and sung on-stage in full voice, and "Word Doctor" with the real Dr. Ruth (Wordheimer) dedicating herself to helping puppets sound out impossibly long words and empowering simple words to exchange a letter or two for a whole new meaning in life. There's also "Gawain's World" which features two armored knights adorned with letters and letter combinations who crash into one another to form new words, animated "Chicken Jane" stories that read like updated "Dick and Jane" readers with words highlighted as they are spoken, the silly clown "Arty Smartypants" who combines single words to form compound words by shaking them around in his oversized clown pants or by invoking his own special magic word, a live-action writer Babs Caplan who frequents the library looking for a quiet place to write and a little help polishing her stories, and a host of other regularly recurring segments that kids love. Music of every imaginable genre including jazz, rock, Broadway, country, and folk permeates every episode and plays an integral part in both aural learning and as a memory aid. Far more than a simple phonics lesson, Between the Lions is a wonderful program that aspires to make every young viewer a life-long lover of reading. Aimed squarely at Kindergartners, Between the Lions is also appropriate for preschoolers through first- and second-graders. --Tami Horiuchi

I bought this set after purchasing the other DVD sets (The Chap with Caps and more and Hopping Hen and more). I cannot recommend this series enough. It has helped my son to read and he is obsessed with certain episodes such as, Be Pop. It is fun, educational and will not bore you, the adult when watching it. If you are a fan of the Muppets then this show will be good.

This series is one of the few childrens shows that I enjoy watching with the kids instead of silently suffering through and like the Muppets tries to serve both the child and adult audiences. The Ingmar Bergman tribute, Sausage Nose, did not do too much for my kids however, I cracked up.

The later seasons of Between the Lions are kind of inferior to the Season 1 and have a lot more "borrowing" from the earlier episodes. I read it was due to budget constraints and some controversy with the sponsors but who knows? I know that there are a lot of episodes that are on VHS but not available on DVD.

In any case, if you like the show get this whole set. But if you have never seen the show and are unsure whether it is something your kids would love then get one of the other 2 smaller sets.

Things to Know:

* the other 2 DVD have many of the same episodes found in Season 1
* the Seaseon 1 packaging is kind of "down scale" in comparison of the first 2 sets;
* Many episodes use other parts of other episodes such as Gawain's Word
* The first 2 sets are more a "best of" of Season 1
* Season 1 is 5 DVDs with 6 episodes each

Episodes in Season 1 (* shows that it can be found in the earlier 2 sets)
DVD

- the ram in the pepper patch
- A peck of peppers
- Sausage nose
- Red hat, green hat
- The lucky duck
- The Old Man
- A King and His Hawk
- The Roar that Makes Them Run
* Piggyback, Piggyback
* The Fox and the Crow
* Giants and Cubs
* Be Bop
* Touching the Moon
* The Boy Who Cried Wolf
* Fuzzy Wuzzy, Wuzzy
- Lionel's Antlers
* To the Ship! To the Ship!
* The Chap with Caps
* Pandora's Box
* Lionel's Great Escape Trick
* There's a Fly in My Soup
* Popcorn Popper
- Something Fishy
* Hug, hug, hug
* Pecos Bill Cleans Up the West
- The Lost Rock
- Little Big Mouse
* Farmer Ken's Puzzle
* Shooting Stars
* Hopping Hen

Highly recommended and I am glad that I got them. I gave away the other 2 earlier sets as gifts and that child loves them too. I hope that they release the other episodes even though the other seasons aren't quite as good, but not quite as good is still better than other shows.

Good packaging.The content is what I remember watching as a kid but it can only be played on a region free DVD player.

I'm a 30 year veteran teacher and more importantly a grandmother. Between the Lions is an excellent source of interesting reading promotion. It is fast paced to keep the interest of young ones and is creatively produced to introduce and reinforce basic phonic skills. There's no tie to a set curriculum, but it's interesting enough to revisit which we all know children love. I invested in it to show it in all kindergarten classrooms in my school and I even bought another set to show to my granddaughter at home. Madison's Grammy

Amazon seem to be having a lot of problems with Deutsche Post, the agents they use for overseas orders. They really need to sort it out as this is the third order in a year that has got lost (or at least not arrived on time - the other two never arrived). They are very good at reissuing lost orders quickly, but this can add another month or more to delivery times. Deutsche Post seem unable to track packages beyond US coastlines or even confirm if they have left the US (how hard can that be?) . So, unless the Between The Lions box set either arrives in the next week or so, I will have to reorder, by which time my son will probably be reading Shakespeare. Being a big fan of the series on TV, I'm sure it is excellent.

I'd like to write a review but I haven't received the item yet. It's been nearly three weeks and the item still hasn't shipped. Oh yeah, it was the "free shipping" Amazon promotes because the item was over a certain value. I have seen the show and many of the episodes. My kids love them. That's why I'm trying to get the DVD.

My son loves this show! They used to show these episodes on PBS but then stopped, so I ordered the whole Season 1. It's very educational yet funny and creative. It really grabbed and kept my son's attention, which isn't always easy as he has autism. He is constantly reciting episodes from memory. I highly recommend.

This is a wonderful show. I am a 1st grade teacher and my students love watching it. The only problem with this DVD set was that all of the "vowels" that are taught are the "short vowel" sounds. I am still waiting for the next DVD to come out which has the "long vowel" sounds. Otherwise it was a great investment. Between the Lions Season 1

I bought this for my grandchildren, age 4 and 5 1/2. They adore books, so reading is important. Their TV time is limited and selective. My son and daughter-in-law think Between the Lions is 'FANTASTIC'. They live in Australia, so the All-Region rating was very important!

5.0 out of 5 stars
