Leona Williams recorded a splendid tribute album to her ex-husband, Merle Haggard a while ago
Leona Williams Sings Merle Haggard
. What could have been a rather maudlin affair was redeemed by Leonas professionalism and understanding of the songs. It really was very good.
Now Leona has recorded a tribute to George Jones using the excellent Heart of Texas house band that produces a lovely tight sound. The track details are on the mp3 page, and the snippets are worth a listen. You get 14 tracks, and unusually for George Jones tributes, you get a few of his Epic hits. One from left field is You Comb Her Hair Every Morning, which not many people would have thought of including. Leona has a big voice and a lovely twang. You can hear her stretch into these songs and enjoy them, although the earlier Jones repertoire seems more suited to her style. Window Up Above she handles very well, as she does Colour of the Blues. When He Stopped Loving Her Today is reached, it seems that Georges version is too well known to allow for another vocalist, and this does not work so well.
Having said that, do not allow yourself to be put off. The album is not as good as the Merle Haggard tribute, but then there are special forces at work there, but it is very enjoyable. Yes, they are covers, and George Jones sung them beautifully himself, but Leona Williams is an excellent Country singer who can bring a lot to a song. She also has excellent musicians, and the fiddle can raise the hairs on the back of your neck at times.
Don't miss this, the album is a ridiculous price, but you can shop around if you don't want to commit to the download. Its worth seeking out.
