After the (temporary) breakup of Living Colour, vocalist Corey Glover launched solo. He didn't garner the same success his band did, but he had some excellent music nonetheless.

Living Colour was known to many as a 'black metal band', but they were far from it. They were simply a band with a great sense of groove that wasn't afraid to get heavy now and then. They also weren't afraid to throw in funk, old school rhythm and blues, salsa, reggae, gospel, and bluegrass if the need arose. They probably would have tossed in a little Gregorian Chant if the song needed it.

Glover's Hymns, released on Babyface's LaFace label, was predominately a collection of old school rhythm and blues, and done quite well. I really don't want to mention Al Green here, but damn it, i have to, because that's the feel Glover got on this album. Excellent, '70s-type R&B. And i dig '70s-type R&B. The album unfortunately starts off with the weakest songs on the whole set, "Hymn #1017" and "Do You First, Then Do Myself", but then the slow jams take over. Highlights include "Little Girl", "Hot Buttered Soul", "One", "Only Time Will Tell", and the very Living Colour-ish "April Rain".

Beautiful, soulful solo album from Living Colour vocalist, criminally ignored at the time of its release (even by me). The ballads are remarkable.
