Biography

  • Born on 28 January 1971, Anthony Cornelius Hamilton is an American R&B singer from Charlotte, North Carolina. Hamilton has sold over 19.6 million albums, counting both independent and collaborative efforts.

Anthony Hamilton’s music career has its beginnings in the gospel choir at church he used to sing in since he was 10 years old. Having signed with label Uptown Recordsin 1993, Hamilton moved to New York to pursue music. He was a backup singer on tour for artist D’Angelo’s album “Voodoo” and subsequently collaborated with southern rap group Nappy Roots on albums “Watermelon, Chicken, and Grits,” “Wooden Leather,” and “The Humdinger.” The collaboration on single “Po’ Folks” won them a Grammy nomination for “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” in 2003.

Hamilton signed with label So So Def Imprint by Jermaine Dupri and came out with an independent album called “Comin’ From Where I’m From” in 2003. The album went platinum and features the single “Charlene.” His sophomore album, entitled “Ain’t Nobody Worryin” was released in 2005 with successful single “Can’t Let Go” and the album became certified gold.

Hamilton has collaborated with numerous R&B artists, even snagging a duet for "Buon Natale" with Nat King Cole on his holiday album. In 2007, Hamilton had a cameo role as a singer in the film “American Gangster” and also contributed to the soundtrack. He sang “Freedom” with Elayna Boynton on the soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino film “Django Unchained” in 2012.

Live reviews

  • Anthony Hamilton

Anthony Hamilton has one of the most soulful and angelic voices in the R&B genre and seeing one of his live performances is almost like a religious experience.

During his performances he is usually backed by a myriad of talented musicians and sometimes even a full orchestra. There are horns, woodwinds, cellos, and violins that gracefully play atmospheric warm tones creating an emotive soundscape for Anthony Hamilton to belt out his soulful voice that makes the audience raise their hands and sway to the music. When an orchestra backs Anthony Hamilton, the orchestra usually crescendos up to the apex of an emotive experience and Anthony Hamilton’s voice rises above the loud sound of the orchestra to demonstrate his passion and vocal force.

During more traditional performances Anthony Hamilton tours with a backing band consisting of a keyboarder, a drummer, a guitarist, a bass player, and several backup singers. The backup singers act as a choir singing the soulful harmonies of the music while Anthony Hamilton acts as a religious focal point preaching his gospel with his soulful, charismatic voice. The keyboard player performs on a keyboard that has a smooth bell like sound and plays very vibrant jazz like chords laying down a smooth vibe. Anthony Hamilton has a wide vocal range, jumping up and down octaves hitting the most difficult notes imaginable, and soulfully breaking into a melisma that will have everyone in awe.

Anthony Hamilton has a great stage presence dressing in suave clothing and a fashionable fedora. He gracefully struts around the stage and dances in the smoothest way that will have the audience fully engaged. To hear Anthony Hamilton’s deep, rich voice grace the presence of your bare ear in a live setting is one of the most inspirational experiences that music has to offer.

  • Anthony Hamilton is widely known for his classical take on the genre of R & B. Having began his days singing in gospel choirs, the soulful influence has never left his music and now he creates stirring and impassioned music.

Crowds flock to see the Grammy award winning multi-instrumentalist expertly perform selections of his discography. Supported by a slick live band, Anthony appears and gives a slight wave before the instrumental bridge of 'The News' begins the show and he begins to sing in his synonymously soulful manner. The vocal is indescribable in its versatility and he performs acrobatics during early tracks such as 'Comin' from Where I'm From' with ease.

Hamilton speaks warmly of his career and of the touring musicians who accompany him this evening before introducing his most well known track 'Charlene'. Tonight it really is all about the voice as Anthony hits the prolonged notes with ease. The audience is treated to a finale in the form of a duet with his accompanying female vocalist as they recreate 'Freedom' lifted from the soundtrack of 'Django: Unchained'. The poignancy and sincerity in which the two performers deliver this song evokes a standing ovation from the grateful crowds.

  • Great show!! Anthony performed for a solid hour and thirty minutes or so. The performance was high energy with lots of audience engagement. His three background singers, The Hamiltones, are truly gifted vocalists in their own right. I've seen Mr. Hamilton perform live on three occasions over a 14-year period, and he has never disappointed. My wife stood for the vast majority of the show singing along to hit after soulful hit. He sang several cuts off of his first major album release "Coming From Where I'm From", which was nostalgic to my wife and I because I played it regularly back when we first started dating 14 years ago. I'd highly recommend any true AH fan to see his live performance in a city near you!

  • As always, Anthony Hamilton delivered the perfect performance. I just love his soulful sounds. During a wardrobe change, the Hamiltones sang their spoof songs, which was hilarious.

Fantasia was amazing as well. When she sang the jazz version of Bittersweet, I was concerned that she was going to do something similar with all her songs. But, she delivered, and delivered well.

The comedian was pretty funny--most of the time. I could've used fewer curse words, but I guess that's his style.

    Overall, a fantastic show!

  • We just saw Hamilton in Sept,he offered nothing new.as far as the first act somewhat boring. I was truly disappointed with house security and their inability to keep people out of the aisles.one young lady attendant did a admirable job trying to control a very unruly, raunchy crowd from the cheap seats from clogging the aisles,I commended her.front of the house security needs to be 6'2 or taller, 220 lb I think that would get the attention of the trailer trash. We were in sec. D row c seats 1,2.what a waste of money

  • Anthony Hamilton has a great, melodious voice and an amazing stage presence. He has a captivating way of engaging his audience and making them feel apart of the show. I really enjoyed the concert minus the contact high from all of the weed heads smoking weed in the audience- it’s not legal in Illinois yet and if it was public places are off limit.

  • Anthony Hamilton was fantastic. His portion of the show was more than I could have hoped for, although the outside venue left a little to be desired.

Mr. Anthony Hamilton and the Hamiltones were everything I had hoped for and more. I will never miss another of his shows if he comes to town and it isn't at this venue.

  • Saw Anthony for the first time in person. He was all I expected and more. No disrespect to the other artist but in my opinion the whole show could have been Mr. Hamilton. His performance was great. He was engaging. I was not enthused with the seating and if I ever go back to the huntington beach pavillion.
