The New York Dolls : Too Much Too Soon Paperback – Illustrated, 11 July 2005

Too Much Too Soon is the definitive story of the most outrageous glam rock bands of them all - The New York Dolls. The Dolls, peddling trans-gender posturing and incendiary rock 'n' roll, were dumped by the record business after making just two albums. But their influence lived on when Malcolm McLaren injected the last of the Dolls' life blood into The Sex Pistols and changed pop forever. From punk to grunge, practically every new sensation in the contemporary rock scene has been a delayed reaction to the New York Dolls. Too Much Too Soon celebrates all the glorious sleaze and excess of the Dolls' brief auto-destruct career through interviews with the survivors, including band members, managers, roadies, groupies and hangers-on. This new edition takes the story up to the Doll's reformation for Morrissey's Meltdown in 2004 and the tragic death of Arthur Kane shortly afterwards. Illustrated and including a comprehensive discography.

“The Smartest Chick I ever met.” – Johnny Thunders

“Nina Writes, Seen her Riot.” – Peter Doherty

“Priceless Books for One Such as I.” – Morrissey

“Nina Antonia Makes a fascinating Story, Irresistible.” – Uncut

Nina Antonia (Liverpool, 1960) is a former music journalist, who has contributed to Uncut, Mojo, Classic Rock and Record Collector. Her first and best known book Johnny Thunders – In Cold Blood is currently being made into a feature film, with Jonas Akerlund set to direct. Johnny described Nina as ‘The smartest chick I’ve ever met.’ Of her book The New York Dolls – Too Much Too Soon (Omnibus, 1998), Uncut magazine commented ‘Nina Antonia makes a fascinating story irresistible.’ Antonia is also featured in the Sundance Film Festival’s nominated documentary New York Doll about Arthur “Killer” Kane alongside Morrissey, Mick Jones, David Johansen, Clem Burke, and Iggy Pop and Nina appears in Danny Garcia’s poignant documentary Looking For Johnny. As well as appearing on Radio One and Radio Six, Nina has performed at spoken word events and enjoyed a retrospective of her work at the Barbican curated by Jay Clifton. Jay Clifton commented that ‘The special value of Nina’s oeuvre lies not so much in her subjects, but in her personal commitment to both the documentation of them and a search for the truth about both their character and their cultural significance. Like the best writers, she begins from personal fascinations. But with a balance of personal feelings and objective contemplation, combined with a fluid literary style, she writes books that resonate beyond the parameters of the surface material.’ Nina lectured on Glam at Tate Liverpool in 2013 which can be seen via YouTube in Parts 1 and 2. In 2016, Nina had her first supernatural piece South-West 13 published in an Egaeus Press anthology Soliloquy for Pan which sold out within days. She has continued to contribute to Egaeus, penning a novella length essay How Shall Dead Men Sing about Lord Alfred Douglas and Oscar Wilde. Another essay Bosie and The Beast appeared in Fenris Wolf 8 in 2017. Nina’s first supernatural novel The Greenwood Faun is currently available for purchase via Egaeus. In 2019, she edited and wrote a detailed biography for Incurable: The Haunted Writings of Lionel Johnson, the Decadent Era’s Dark Angel that was published by Strange Attractor Press.

When it comes to rock bios, the benchmark for me has always been Motley Crue's The Dirt. No other rock n' roll tale seems to have quite the same candidacy or pirate-like debauchery. Nina Antonia's Too Much Too Soon comes very close with its story of the short-but-vicariously-lived New York Dolls. The Dolls only released two studio albums during their brief time with us in the early-to-mid 70s but their legacy can be seen in just about everything that came after that, be it punk, new wave or indeed hair metal. And yet their story is not one of rags-to-riches or even rags-to-riches-to-rags but rather rags-t0-rags, their own self-indulgent hedonism alongside poor management, mediocre sales and contracts that were not written in the Dolls' favour meaning little in the way of hard cash ever made it to the band members' bank accounts. Throw in the drink and drugs and abuse, all relayed so vividly by Antonia through a wealth of interview archives and her own colourful style of writing, and you get a dark and decadent page-turner. So throw on some slap, buff up that hair, dig in and enjoy.

Always had a special place in my heart for The Dolls since I saw them many years ago on Whistle Test . There 's something magical about them. When they were good they were brilliant. I would recommend this book great read. Such a shame it ended in The trailer park.

John Lennon once said that if you wanted
to give rock and roll a different name you could
call it Chuck Berry. Well if you wanted to sum
up the whole story its The New York Dolls.
They did it all while looking better than most.
A good incite into the band. Nina Antonia writes
lovingly but not blindly about the greatest band
most of you have never heard of.X

A well researched book, covering the bands formation, time together and eventual initial fall out.. Sensitively written, whom really knows the truth, none of us were there.. A band way before their time, that's why they remain timeless. A food purchase

Fantastic book - read it on the beach in a couple of days which was perfect. A reminder of just how good they were and while it's a pity their career wasn't longer at least it didn't go stale either.
