New Kathryn Bigelow movie confirmed for Netflix

Kathryn Bigelow reveals plans for new movie on Netflix

Esteemed filmmaker and Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow has confirmed she will be releasing her new movie on streaming giant Netflix.

The plans to work with the streamer on her next project were revealed at its upfront presentation in New York on May 15th, which will be her latest movie since 2017’s Detroit. The movie, starring John Boyega, Will Poulter, and John Krasinski, enjoyed significant commercial success. The script and performances were its strongest elements, however, it did receive criticism for the story’s backdrop of African-American experiences.

Still, although it generally accrued a significant amount of box office success, it struggled to live up to the praise generated by Bigelow’s earlier films, like The Hurt Locker, which saw her become the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, and Zero Dark Thirty, a dramatisation of the decade-long manhunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Although the specific details of her new project with Netflix have yet to be revealed, it’s clear that it will have nothing to do with an earlier project she was scheduled to work on with the platform, an adaptation of David Koepp’s disaster novel Aurora, which the director was confirmed to have left earlier this year.

However, Netflix has yet to release more details about a handful of projects, including the sequel to Adam Sandler’s comedy Happy Gilmore. This news followed a series of speculations about whether the actor would be reprising his role for a potential follow-up film.

Rumours of the sequel also began to stir when original cast member Christopher McDonald hinted that the film was in the works, recalling that he “saw Adam about two weeks ago” and he showed him the “first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

As of yet, there is no official information on the title of Bigelow’s project or when production will start on Happy Gilmore 2.
