About Rancho Mirage | Schools, Demographics, Things to Do - Homes.com
Planted 10 miles from the glitz and glamor of Palm Springs, the resort city of Rancho Mirage is a land of country clubs and condos, where the dusty Sonoran Desert gives way to a golfer’s paradise of green. Winter is peak season in California’s Coachella Valley, as the blistering desert sun takes its own vacation. In these slightly cooler months, two nearby airports make Rancho Mirage an easy flyway for snowbirds flocking to their second—or third—home.

Decadence in the Coachella Valley
In the shadow of the Santa Rosa Mountains, magnificent midcentury mansions go for upwards of $6 million, while more modest Spanish Revivals start at $600,000. Privacy is prized, and the numerous gated communities include all sorts of clubbing—golf clubs, racquet clubs, tennis clubs, even a yacht club. Many homes sit right on the fairway, making tee time an easy appointment to keep. Away from the greens, several mobile-home communities offer colorful, cost-friendlier options, starting at $60,000. “But they’re not like Tornado Alley mobile homes,” says Marc Lange, a broker associate at Equity Union who has sold homes in the valley for nearly 20 years. “There’s no good side of the tracks or bad side of the tracks. Everyone lives in harmony; it’s just different ways of living.”

How Green Is This Valley
A few small parks, such as Rancho Mirage Community Park and Bloch Cancer Survivors Park, dot the desert landscape, and the vastness of Joshua Tree National Park is only 40 miles away. But Rancho Mirage’s greatest greens can be found on its world-class golf courses. Legendary courses include Tamarisk, the “potentially diabolical, yet indescribably playable” Pete Dye Resort Course at the Westin, and Thunderbird, the first golf course in the Coachella Valley. Many courses are connected to private clubs; increasingly, however, the private clubs also offer less-expensive social memberships that don’t include golf. Those who can’t win on the green might try to win some green at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. And the world-renowned Betty Ford Center, founded in Rancho Mirage, offers a round of recovery for those who need a breather.

Fun in the Sun and Shade
To escape the heat, Rancho Mirage residents often venture to the River, a confluence of shopping and dining options as well as local events and expos. Increasingly, the Coachella Valley and its nine cities are known for mega music festivals, including Stagecoach, Power Trip and the eponymous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Rancho Mirage is close—but not too close—to the party. “Living here,” Lange says, “it feels like every weekend there’s something going on for young, old and everyone in between.”

School’s Out
The days of homework and homeroom are but a distant memory for most Rancho Mirage residents. Still, the city boasts both a public elementary school and a public high school, rated B and B-plus by Niche, as well as Palm Valley School, a private school sporting a rare A-plus rating.

Rat Pack, Meet Mouse House
In years past, Rancho Mirage was known as the “playground of presidents,” and it wasn’t uncommon to see Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope sipping martinis and chipping birdies. Today, with the glitzy days mostly behind it, Rancho Mirage is making plans to replace the Rat Pack with the Mouse House: The city will soon host the world’s first Storyliving by Disney community, a master-planned development devised by Disney Imagineers. The mixture of single-family homes and condos will include 55+ communities for the young at heart.
