Flea is a "flashy" bass player, but he's not a that great of a musician. I know I would be crucified for this. Flea was a huge inspiration for me growing up and picking up bass as my instrument. Heck, I bought MusicMan because of him! As I grew older and started playing different styles of music I realized that Flea could only play one type of music. Whenever I see his jams, he's doing the same thing over and over again. He can't play in pocket anymore. Even John said that he think that their music is a bass solo with guitar and drums added after. I think Flea's pinnacle was Stadium Arcadium where he actually had great supporting bass lines. Since then, there're only 2 tracks where he has really good memorable bass lines — Monarchy of Roses and Watchu Thinkin. I could only imagine how much tighter their albums would be if they toned down Flea's overplaying.

Are you essentially referring to the baselines sounding more like jams and dont feel special anymore? thats the hint im getting, and I believe that for all their new stuff, I believe it gradually went downhill after stadium arcadium. It feels like a 16 year old spamming riffs they came up with in their bedroom. Im not using that example to say they're easy or theyre bad, it just feels like he sat down, noodled around and thought "hey that sounds cool let's make a song out of that". UL and DC seem like that for me. Nothing wrong with creating parts from jams, but it just feels like the baselines dont feel special anymore. And what in my opinion makes it a bit worse is john's guitar work is just supporting stuff, nothing special about it especially on UL. I like that album, to me it's just a vibe album, it feels good to listen to, but nothing more. Playing it on guitar is absolutely boring. Feels like pop album honestly. I like josh's guitar work on IWY and Getaway albums better than john's guitar work on UL. DC is about the same as Josh, maybe better.

Josh albums are nothing special. You'll get flamed on this sub

I agree that they weren't as good as the albums with John when he came back the first time, but I think Josh's stuff is better than UL and even a bit of DC.
