I don't know if it was because of my age in the Sixtys or how Playboy promoted the Playmates but I felt like I knew at least something about each Playmate's personality. I was an avid fan until maybe the first part of 1986. I could remember their names just by looking at their photos. Playmates started doing autograph tours in the 80's where they would be at bookstores or auto shows or other places and you could meet them and get a free autograph instead of having to pay $50 at the Glamourcon conventions. My hometown of Dallas even had a Playboy Club for a short time.
Firstly,"The Complete Centerfolds" is a great book of Playboy history and memorabilia. Everyone knows Marilyn Monroe was the first playmate. But who remembers Jayne Mansfield and Stella Stevens were also Playmates? Many Playmates were actresses in B movies or hosts on Playboy TV. "The Complete Centerfolds" is a great walk down memory lane plus a discovery of what was thought of as sexy in the 1950's. Secondly, the book costs $75 on the Playboy Shop website and only $46 from Amazon.
I've enjoyed just going through the book, page by page, and having all the memories of Playboy pour back into my brain. If you are or were a fan of Playboy for any period of years during their almost 64 years of publishing, "The Complete Centerfolds" brings back many happy memories of experiencing Playboy and the Playboy world.
Some reviewers complained about the printed pictures not filling the entire page and even varying in size. The reason for this is actually a matter of historical accuracy. The early centerfold pictures (before they were even called centerfolds) only filled a single page of the magazine. Starting in February 1954, the pictures were printed across two pages in the center of the magazine. Finally the centerfold shots were printed across the equivalent of three full pages by adding an additional fold, beginning with the March 1956 picture. The images in the book are presented as they appeared in the magazine and are sized relatively to reflect these changes.
Even better than expected? Yes! As a pinup photographer myself, I am always interested in knowing who took the picture and being able to pick out the different styles of each shooter. In the book, at the start of each new year, is a list of the centerfolds with the following pieces of information: the month and year the picture appeared, the name of the Playmate, and the name of the photographer who took the picture! The quality of the printing is excellent and reflects the improving quality of the original images as the editorial staff went from purchasing calendar pictures to actually commissioning photos specifically for publication in the magazine.
In short, this is an excellent book and they have done a top-quality job of it!
I personally like the cost savings on the smaller edition though I can see why many would want to go larger esp. if they have a place to store it. This size stores pretty easily.
