New Alternate Logo for Athletics Unveiled

Here's the new forward facing Sammy added as an alt logo for Fall 2024.

Sam Houston Athletics unveils alternate Bearkat mark - Sam Houston (gobearkats.com)
When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty, and property of the people ... and ... becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression ... it is a ... sacred obligation to their posterity to abolish such government, and create another in its stead. -Sam Houston

“Retro marks from the past will be used by Bearkat Football this season to commemorate the university's 100 years of orange and white.”

    Hopefully some throwback uniforms!

That 50's Sammy was used until at least the late 1970's, but maybe just at the bookstore & not by the athletics (or possibly anybody else) though. The spiral notebooks that I carried all the way through SHSU from the Fall of 1973 through the Summer of 1978 used that 50's mascot with SHSU on the cap rather than the SHSTC letters.

I loved those notebooks because they were about 2 inches thick and had enough dividers to cover the notes in all of my classes for a semester. Otherwise, I could have never kept up with my notebooks. Of course, any time I misplaced that thing temporarily I freaked out, because if it was lost so was DOK!!!

A person can be dependent on The Government. A person can be Free. A person cannot be dependent on The Government AND be Free. It doesn't work that way.

Did you ever notice that when someone is discussing something & you ask a question, or make a point ... they often get angry or defensive? You can just about bet that they either have something to hide, or, something to deny. It is generally something that is beyond just the answer to your question, or whatever it is they want to deny.

BTW: I think recycling this stuff, even when retromoded a bit, is a good thing.

BTW / BTW: That 1950's Sammy must have been produced by somebody that owned the trademark/copyright and revised it slightly for each college or university that had a Cat or a Kat of any type as a mascot. After I got to Sam & saw it, I most have seen that same basic mascot for at least 10 to 12 or more colleges and universities. Had no reason to pick up on it before.

I think just about any college in that era with an animal mascot used the animal-sailor cap combo. I always liked it TBH, and I’m glad the marching Sammy as well as the new alternate logo incorporated it into a more modern look. Very classy!

NEW one is OK except for the eyes. The old one has true cat's eyes.

Well, when I say they were similar ...I mean like 99% similar. Usually just the initials on the sailor cap changed to fit the name of the university.

Why not just use the classic Kat that DOK is referring to for this 100th Celebration? It’s timeless. You’re bound to see the 50s-70s logo walking around campus… and it hasn’t been in “official use” for half of a century.

We already have two Sammy logos that get PLENTY of airtime. Did we need a third? I thought this rebrand was about simplification? And removing black from the palette?

The university pushing the original SHSU Sailor Kat on merch, around campus, on helmets, etc. would’ve been an absolute hit with students and alumni. This falls flat IMO.

Sammy’s tufts aren’t nearly defined enough in this new one, he looks like a rodent. The ears are too close together. And definitely doesn’t have that look in his eyes.

They did themselves a disservice putting those two side by side.

I don’t mind it though it feels like we’re going for the Clemson of Texas route. As others have mentioned they should have put an SH on the cap to keep it looking from somewhat generic and allow for some school awareness.
