The trailer for Season 2 of "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" depicts Sauron's rise to evil prominence.

Amazon released a sneak peek at the second season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" series on Tuesday, giving viewers a look at how the realm is readying itself to take on the Dark Lord Sauron, whose return was detailed in Season 1.

In the trailer's opening moments, dwarven Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur) announces, "An evil, ancient and powerful, has returned."

Sauron (Charlie Vickers) can be seen adopting a new appearance, masquerading as an Elf with blonde hair and elf ears. Although his presence is felt frequently throughout the video, he appears only briefly. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Isildur (Maxim Baldry), Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova), and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) are all depicted fighting to safeguard Middle-earth.

The trailer masterfully combines intense battles, Orc armies, menacing sea monsters, a great Eagle, three Rings of Power, and the realm of Mordor enshrouded in darkness, all accompanied by composer Bear McCreary's dramatic soundtrack.

The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) - who remains unidentified but is speculated to be the mighty wizard Gandalf - is also briefly featured in the trailer, driving a staff into the ground.

"One of the interesting things about this year is that we'll see Sauron out in the open, setting everything in motion," Vickers said in a behind-the-scenes featurette released on Tuesday. "We'll be able to watch it all unfold."

Season 2 will pick up with the return of the malevolent Dark Lord, who must restore his strength to oversee the formation of the Rings of Power, which will enable him to control the people of Middle-earth, according to an official synopsis.

Faced with impending chaos, the characters are challenged to "find their place in a world that is rapidly approaching catastrophe," the synopsis continues. "As friendships become strained and kingdoms start to fall apart, the forces of good will fight even more valiantly to preserve what matters most to them: each other."

Season 1 premiered in 2022 and takes place in Middle-earth's Second Age, "thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' books," according to Amazon. The ensemble cast includes Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Megan Richards, Benjamin Walker, Lloyd Owen, and Charles Edwards, among others.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" Season 2 will be accessible on Amazon Prime Video beginning August 29.
