Anke Van dermeersch: It was fantastic to be Miss Belgium as an 18-year-old girl and to travel around the world to the various international Miss competitions. I enjoyed it immensely and learned a lot. The university of life is incredibly interesting. You learn a lot that you don’t get told at the real universities.
I would participate in the Miss Belgium pageant again, but would never become Miss Belgium again. Because to become Miss Belgium nowadays you have to bring a politically correct opinion, have a color, or be transgender. Everything else doesn’t matter anymore.
I sometimes say: if a Miss Belgium becomes a Flemish nationalist, then there must be something seriously wrong with Belgium!
Edwards: Not many people make the career transition from modeling to politics, but you were able to do both on the very biggest of stages. How did that happen?
Van dermeersch: After my career as a Miss, I graduated as a lawyer. I wanted to become a lawyer to help people and did so for 10 years, but soon felt that I didn’t get any satisfaction from it. That’s why I became a member of the Vlaams Blok and later the Vlaams Belang. Through politics, I can help many more people at the same time by making adjustments to the legislation in our country. In the first few years, I was mainly militant in Antwerp, where I was born and raised. As a former Miss Belgium, I was the first well-known Fleming and lawyer to go against the cordon mediatique and sanitaire around the Vlaams Blok. In 2003 I took part in the elections for the Belgian Senate for the first time and I immediately received a huge number of preferential votes. A Miss Belgium in politics, that was unprecedented! I have also been re-elected ever since.
Edwards: What issues did you run on when you were first elected as a Senator of Belgium?
Van dermeersch: Among other things, I am ‘the mother’ of the European burqa ban. I wrote the first legislation for a burqa ban in 2003 and it has ever since been the basis of burqa bans throughout Europe.
As a citizen of Antwerp, I also closely follow all dossiers that concern the province of Antwerp and its city in terms of mobility, public works, education, housing, work and the economy.
As a senator since 2003, I have taken many initiatives to bring about the orderly division of the Belgian Union and to put Flanders on the road to independence. I know better than anyone the specific powers of the Senate, which are mainly focused on the Constitution and legislation on the organization and functioning of the federal state.
As a former tax lawyer, and lawyer-tax specialist, I naturally feel like a fish in water when it comes to financial and tax laws/policies. That is why I am also an elected member of the Flemish Parliament, putting the Flemish government to the test with regard to the Flemish public finances.
Edwards: You have held high office in your country since 2003. How do you continue to make your message attractive to voters?
Van dermeersch: As a former Miss, I have a lot of credit with the Belgian public. When I proclaim hard positions, they come across as less harsh and people start to think about my points of view instead of immediately classifying it as extreme. After all, our positions are not extreme, but radical. This is based on the Latin word ‘radix’, which means root. We want to get to the root of the problems.
Of course, my way of speaking is not what the media wants. They want to portray my party as dangerous and extreme, but a look at me and people realize that I am not the image that fits. That’s why I’m almost not allowed to be featured in the traditional media, because that’s not the image they want.
I want people to think for themselves and not let opinions be imposed on them by the mainstream media. That works out pretty well because I have been a Senator, Flemish Member of Parliament, and Antwerp City Councilmember for more than 20 consecutive years now. I defend my constituents at all political levels wholeheartedly.
Edwards: Your colleague in the Belgian Parliament, Dries Van Langenhove, was recently sentenced to prison in one of the most contemptible and unjust court decisions I have ever seen. What was your reaction to this?
Van dermeersch: Dries Van Langenhove received the heaviest possible punishment. He was convicted by the court of, among other things, racism and negationism. For this, he received an effective prison sentence of 1 year and a fine of 16,000 euros. He was also stripped of his civil rights for 10 years, preventing him from exercising political office.
In a healthy democracy, ideas are fought with ideas. The writing is therefore on the wall that the public prosecutor’s office took legal action and severely punished an opinion offense. For a democratic state governed by the rule of law, punishing those who mobilize politically around political ideas is a death blow.
Moreover, it was also about estimating memes as an opinion rather than humor. Inevitably, persecution of humor turns into a process of intention. This is a shame, because as the saying goes, “What can no longer be said with laughter is not the truth.”
Edwards: It seems almost paradoxical that such a verdict would be rendered in Belgium, where your party, Vlaams Belang, one of the most powerful nationalist parties in the world, has become the country’s most popular. How do you reconcile this?
Van dermeersch: The elite wants to fight the Vlaams Belang by all means and it is not the first time that they have done this through the courts. In 2004, the Vlaams Blok, the party before the current Vlaams Belang, was condemned for racism, but a few months later the voters responded to the elite with a maximum of votes.
Because of the conviction, we were pushed even more into the role of victim and the ideas of the people and the plans of our party remained what they were. Also, this time, the day after the upcoming elections on Sunday, June 9, 2024, the other parties will wake up with a hangover like in 2004. History repeats itself and the Vlaams Belang is getting stronger and stronger.
There is no way out for the elite, the people will take back power, and the people are us.
Edwards: Thankfully, there has been a very vocal outcry to what has happened. Elon Musk recently raised awareness about Van Langenhove’s situation on X and has personally engaged with him. Has such solidarity been encouraging for you to see?
Van dermeersch: I’m not a big fan of Elon Musk.
He has indeed raised awareness about Van Langenhove’s situation and I think that’s a good thing, of course, but also on X there is no free speech possible to this day.
For example, I have been shadow-banned for years now. Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and its transformation to X didn’t help that either.
Not everything Elon Musk does should be accepted and followed, especially when it comes to new technologies and AI in particular.
Edwards: Speaking of Vlaams Belang, how has it been able to enjoy such sustained success while many other nationalist parties in Europe burn quickly and fizzle out?
Van dermeersch: The Vlaams Belang is a party with a very long history dating back to the First World War.
The Vlaams Belang was founded in 2004 as the successor to the Vlaams Blok, which first emerged in elections in 1978, but the undercurrent of Flemish nationalism on which the parties are built arose during the First World War, when Flemish soldiers received orders in French while they only understood Dutch. The contempt of the French-speaking elite towards the Flemish population is the basis of the struggle for change that we are waging to this day.
There have also been other parties that have emerged on this basis, such as the Volksunie and the current N-VA, but in the end they have always put themselves at the service of the elite out of opportunism. We don’t!
Edwards: The Islamization of Europe is something that you have been very outspoken about. Do you believe that the Great Replacement can be reversed?
Van dermeersch: The vast majority of the European population is in favor of restricting and even completely stopping any form of non-European immigration to Europe.
The assumption that we need migrant workers to keep our economy afloat; the idea that we need young foreigners to sustain our population and combat the ageing of the population, and the idea that we have to solve crisis after crisis – anywhere in the world – by bringing in a new wave of economic and war refugees is as destructive as it is dangerous.
The population is already aware of this. So yes, with the support of the people, it is possible to turn the tide.
Edwards: Do you believe that an independent Flemish Republic could ever be established?
Van dermeersch: Yes, there is a tendency to create a Europe of peoples to replace the current undemocratic EU in Europe. The Vlaams Belang is a Flemish nationalist party and we are therefore striving to split up Belgium and establish a Flemish (and Walloon) state.
For an independent Flanders, the Vlaams Belang sees a special relationship with the Netherlands. This is based on a Dutch cultural community in Europe.
For our party, Flemish independence is the most important point on the program. For the Vlaams Belang it is a matter of principle, based on the right of self-determination of peoples. The most fundamental argument in favor of Flemish independence is the annual financial transfers from Flanders to Wallonia and the disagreement between Flemish and Walloon politicians that make a coherent federal policy impossible. An independent Flemish state would be able to use the tax money of the Flemish people to pursue a much more efficient policy to solve the problems of the population in terms of healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc.
Edwards: What other issues and projects are you currently working on?
Van dermeersch: At the moment I’m in campaign mode, because there are national and local elections this year. On both, 9 June and 13 October, I will be re-elected to all my mandates. After that, I will help to put together a new government to meet all the needs of our constituents in the best possible way. That’s a huge amount of work and many grueling working days, but I do it with love and passion.

The SPD of the 1920s was suspected of being a gang of “patriotically insensitive fellows”. This was not only, but also opposed by the “Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold”, founded in Magdeburg in 1924, the most successful social democratic mass organization of the Weimar Republic with up to three million members at times.
The SPD “Reichsbanner” campaigned under a very specific slogan. Following internal changes within the association, SPD politician Otto Hörsing, who was also the founder and long-standing federal chairman of the “Reichsbanner”, explained what this was in an open letter to the organization’s federal executive committee:
“This internal organizational measure does not mean a change in the objective of our federation. Our old slogan remains: Nothing for us – everything for Germany!” [Note: strongly reminiscent of the Nazi slogan “You are nothing, your people are everything”]
The SA actually copied the slogan and had it engraved on their daggers.
The “Reichsbanner” still exists today as a registered association, in which mainly conservative social democrats are organized. The organization has good contacts with the Bundeswehr. The association that exists today has not yet distanced itself from the historical slogans of the “Reichsbanner”.
The lawyer and publicist Ansgar Neuhof writes with reference to the “Reichsbanner”:
“The contemporary sources prove that the slogan ‘Alles für Deutschland’ was a social democratic one. What is significant here is that the sources show that the slogan was one of the organizations themselves. It was therefore not simply ‘just’ the users’ own words. This contradicts the frequently made assertion that it had been an SA slogan since the early or mid-1920s. There is not the slightest reason to assume that the Social Democrats Hörsing and Höltermann and the SPD or SPD-affiliated organizations and their newspapers could have used an SA slogan of all things.”

That may be all well and good, but it doesn’t change the fact that the SA made the slogan popular and Höcke could therefore only refer to them. At any rate, this is how the system judges will always argue, and not without good reason. The crucial question is whether a meaningful and correct sentence can be declared a crime just because the Nazis used it. The Nazis also hijacked the motto of the Frisians “Better dead than a slave” and also “Better dead than red”, which the Americans also used against communism.
The word “autobahn” should also be banned; after all, the Nazis built it, even if the idea was conceived before they came to power. Adidas and Puma should also be banned as Nazi brands. Anyone who refers to Adidas is in principle a Nazi, as is every VW driver and user of the term “Volkswagen”. And so on and on. This is roughly the “logic” of the left-liberal corrupters of the people. The question for these people is not which word is used, but who uses it.
Helmut Schmidt said that there were too many foreigners in the country who were far removed from the culture (mainly Turks at the time), and that this would ultimately lead to major problems if immigration of this ethnic group continued unchecked. But Helmut Schmidt, as the second-largest Social Democrat in post-war Germany after Willy Brandt, was allowed to say this, and it should be considered today “in the context of the zeitgeist of the time”.
Even Merkel, who has just published her “political memoirs” under the book title “Freedom” [sic!], was still propagandizing against migration from Islamic countries before 2010. The Wiesbaden Regional Court has found a 30-year-old man from the Congo guilty of raping and brutally abusing his own mother.
Moise Lohombo, who was praised in the media as “the boxing baker”, as a model refugee and integration miracle from Wiesbaden, has been conspicuous since his childhood for acts of violence and later for drug offenses, for which he was later sentenced to prison. Lohombo “fights his way through”
Moise Lohombo came to Germany at the age of eight, where his mother, who gave birth to him at the age of twelve, was being treated for a kidney condition. Even then, the boy was considered to have behavioral problems because he beat up other children. He was handed over to a care facility, where he completed an apprenticeship as a baker and turned to boxing.
The Deutsche Handwerkszeitung rounds off Lohombo’s portrait with his professional qualities as a journeyman baker, which must have convinced the trade journal: “When I bake a cake, for example a really good strawberry cake – the women are totally into that, I know that!”
The violent crimes that have accompanied Lohombo since his early youth are listed in the Deutsche Handwerkszeitung under “youthful sins”, because there are “ups and downs” in life. Sport, in particular boxing, has “stabilized” him. Lohombo “literally boxed his way through” is how the newspaper enthusiastically describes Lohombo’s career in Germany.
Barbaric crime of a supposed integration miracle
Shortly after Lohombo’s release from prison on August 25 last year, where he was serving time for drug offenses, he committed the crime in the apartment he shared with his mother. Lohombo darkens the apartment with blinds before the crime and locks all the windows and doors. Meanwhile, he threatens his mother with a knife and intimidates her, telling her that he will kill her if she refuses to have sex with him. The mother offers him money for a prostitute so that he will spare her. To no avail.
During the rape, Lohombo abuses his mother by punching her in the face, leaving traces of blood all over the apartment. After the ordeal, Lohombo apologizes to his mother, removes the traces of blood, calls an ambulance and flees.
The mother is seriously injured and admitted to hospital, where she is treated for severe brain haemorrhages and the psychological consequences of the rape. At the hospital, she expresses concern that her son may have impregnated her.
Lohombo is capable of guilt
The defense argued in court with Lohombo’s consumption of psychogenic substances and alcohol. However, the court found Lohombo guilty and decided against committing her to a psychiatric institution.
“How can such a thing be?” the judge asked himself, explaining that due to the cruelty of the case, he initially assumed that he must have misread the case file. The only thing Lohombo said during the trial was: “I don’t know how this could have happened.”
Lohombo, who already had several previous convictions, was sentenced to nine years in prison.

Tunisians rave about Swiss prisons
They have been causing the local police a lot of work for years: young men from the Maghreb. Blick went to Tunisia in search of clues. Almost all of them want to leave and many want to go to Switzerland – for a very specific reason.
“Are you kidding?” asks Anwar (24), pointing with an outstretched hand to the 50 or so people sitting in front of the old city gate in the Tunisian coastal town of Sfax. “Of course they all want to leave here, every single one of them. There is no future for us in Tunisia.”
Anwar went to school for three years, after which he couldn’t find a job and had a lot of dead time. A typical biography in Tunisia. The Maghreb country has record high emigration rates, despite millions in aid for economic development from Switzerland and the EU. Many leave Tunisia illegally and end up in Europe as hopeless asylum seekers, where they often become delinquent and unruly – including in Switzerland.
“Maybe I’ll find a European woman on the internet who wants to marry me,” says Anwar on this warm spring afternoon in Sfax. “Otherwise I’ll take the boat and make the ‘harka’, the crossing,” says Anwar. “My parents also say, yalla, go! It’s better in Europe.”
It costs 6,000 dinars, the equivalent of 1,700 francs, to cross to the Italian island of Lampedusa on a refugee boat. Everyone here knows that. More than one in ten of the 157,651 refugees who arrived in Italy by boat last year are Tunisian (only Guinea currently has more migrants streaming into Europe). And: Switzerland is very popular with Tunisians wanting to flee – for a very specific reason.
“You’re a great place to steal and deal”
“Your prisons are so luxurious,” laughs Wajdi (17) and talks about his friends who have already made it to Switzerland. The young hairdresser also wants to go to the country with the “beautiful cells”. He sits with his friends on the dusty street outside the César Hair Style salon in Sfax. The men’s cut costs three francs, but there are no customers to be seen for miles around. “If I don’t get a job as a hairdresser there, then it’s easy to steal and deal,” says Wajdi.
You can make a good living from it. And: Swiss prisons enjoy a good reputation in Tunisia. This is confirmed by two other young men who don’t want their names in the papers. They prefer the Swiss prison to Tunisian freedom – without hesitation. To Switzerland to steal. What could happen…
Migrants from Tunisia and other Maghreb countries have long been a headache for the police in this country. Maghrebi are the main perpetrators of thefts from vehicles, which almost doubled throughout Switzerland last year. There are a noticeable number of repeat offenders among Maghrebi nationals, writes the Zurich city police on request. They are often “cheeky and cheeky” in contact with the police, according to the Bern cantonal police. The offenders “often behave unruly and threaten or attack our employees”. The mostly young men know that they have little to fear.
This is why Tunisians are fleeing their homeland in droves
572 Tunisians applied for asylum in Switzerland in 2023, 42% more than in the previous year. Only asylum applications from Morocco and Turkey have risen more sharply. Applications from Tunisians are practically hopeless. Only around one percent have any chance at all. This is why there have been 24-hour fast-track procedures for Maghrebi throughout Switzerland since January. An attempt to get the rapidly growing number of applications under control.
Swiss tightening or not: the good reputation of our country (and its prisons), contact with Tunisians who already live here and, last but not least, the difficult situation at home are driving people out of this beautiful Mediterranean country in droves. According to the International Organization for Migration, 17,972 Tunisians crossed the Mediterranean on refugee boats last year.
The Tunisian government is literally running away from its people. Tunis has therefore recently issued a ban on visiting the Tunisian Kerkenna Islands around ten kilometers off the coast of Sfax. The port police will only allow foreign tourists and Tunisians who can prove that they own a house on Kerkenna onto the ferry. Everyone else is under general suspicion of using the island as a springboard for an illegal onward journey to Lampedusa.
There is little to keep the Tunisians in their homeland. On average, they earn just under 300 francs a month and more than 40 percent of under 25-year-olds are unemployed. There is a lack of many things. The country is constantly running out of sugar and flour. Olive oil is five times more expensive than it was a short time ago. Even the bribes paid to police officers are massively higher due to inflation, Tunisians complain. Tourism, on which the country lived well for decades, is in the doldrums following the pandemic and several Islamist terrorist attacks.
What use are the Swiss millions for Tunisia?
The CHF 101 million that Switzerland transferred to Tunisia between 2021 and 2024 for projects to strengthen democracy and promote the economy have not changed the miserable situation. In fact, the North African country is currently one of the priority countries for Swiss development aid.
And: it signed a migration agreement with Switzerland in 2012. Switzerland issues visas for up to 150 Tunisians per year for work or study stays. In return, Tunisia takes back rejected asylum seekers. Switzerland has already deported 451 people to Tunisia under the agreement and 402 returned voluntarily as at the end of 2023. Switzerland pays for the flights and transfers an undisclosed amount of money to the deportees to help them get started in their home country.
Murat (39) would also gladly accept such a grant. He sits down at the port of Sfax in the shade of the palm trees and waits for customers who want to take one of his three children’s electric cars out for a few dinars. But Murat doesn’t want to leave – he is the only Tunisian who Blick has spoken to on site. “My brother wants to leave, many friends want to leave. I try to stop them. Anyone who wants to can make it in Tunisia. But many would rather deal or steal in Europe than work hard here,” says Murat. He will die at some point, whether he stays in Sfax or leaves. “And until then, I’ll hold out, al-Hamdu li-Llah.”

The Basel man with Turkish roots will have to answer to the Basel criminal court on Monday for various charges.
The public prosecutor is convinced that Ertan Y. financed his life of luxury with other people’s money until his imprisonment in mid-June 2021. He is said to have appropriated this money through large-scale investment fraud by an internationally organized group. The loss: over 3.6 million euros and 79 victims.
Money is also said to have flowed into his pockets through organized, illegal gambling. Other charges: child abuse, forgery and bribery of two prison officers. The two will also have to answer to the court from Monday.
