Jeff Kent controversy

General Discussion

So I recently found out that one of Jeff Kent’s teammates once said, “He [Kent] doesn’t know how to deal with African-Americans,” which implies Kent might be racist to some degree (or at least has certain biases).

Did the survivor community know about this at the time of Philippines, and if so what was the reaction? If not, what would’ve been the reaction? This was also in 2005 so we’re still talking about 7 years before he went on the show.

I’m also not trying to “cancel” Jeff Kent or anything, but he also made that Obama takes 600k comment so it just makes me wonder even more. Does anyone have more info on what happened? If so that would be appreciated, thanks.

Kent was always kinda a dick to media so it doesn’t completely surprise me but he probably changed

He’s just a redneck type guy; His past garnered no real negative reaction because comments like this are relatively tiny compared to those towards, for example, John Rocker. Jeff Kent is “baseball player who was good and might have some dirt to dig up”, Rocker was “Douchebag bigot who happened to play baseball”. Not that you mentioned rocker but I’m trying to give an example of why it wasn’t as huge of a deal

Edited

Yeah, that’s fair. I think it’s more likely that Kent just has that sort of old-school stubborn mentality, so he may have some biases that come with it, but his heart’s probably in the right place. Just doesn’t always act on it well. But yeah Rocker is a whole different story and he’s just straight up a racist dbag lol.

I mean, a teammate saying that he doesn't handle African Americans well is different than actual proof that he behaved in a biased manner. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Also, I don't think the Obama quote comes off as racist, just annoyed at Taxes. I think it could be that he would say "After Bush takes it," had Bush been president at the time.

Obama was president when Philippines was filmed. Kent's boot episode aired the day Obama was re-elected.

Think this might've had something to do with him having beef with Barry bonds but I think Kent also hated the media so probably was just him being a dick about something then miscommunication

This specific example was with Milton Bradley.

I think during his baseball career he was just known as an asshole and part of that was that he was always fighting with his black teammates. I don't know enough about it to make character judgements on him regarding if he's racist or not, but he did donate money to Prop 8 so I wouldn't be surprised if he is (or was) a discriminatory person in other regards.

I don't know if Kent is a racist, but there have been several accusations about him being homophobic. A lot of people were shocked that he was willing to align with Dana.

He got into a fist fight with Barry Bonds while they were teammates, and he has always been an uncooperative, insulting, elitist ass when dealing with the media. He's a borderline Hall Of Fame player, but I think his crappy attitude is why he hasn't come close to being voted in.

So I wouldn't be surprised if he were a racist too.

Well jeff Kent is a world-renowned dickhead, so hes either radically racist or an indiscriminate asshole

I’m pretty sure they’re talking about Barry Bonds, who was notorious for being extraordinarily hard to get along with as a human being regardless of his skin-tone. Doubt that Kent is a racist.

That was Milton Bradley who said that.

Milton Bradley played half a season as a teammate of Kent’s on the Dodgers in 05. I’m not a big fan of Kent’s and he has been known to be a complete asshole, but one person’s perception of him over a limited span of time does not make me believe he is racist.

I think like you said, maybe to some degree. I dont think the Obama comment has anything to do with it tho (I dont know for sure, I'm not a baseball fan). I just think anyone could have said that, and he could have said that about any president. But I dont know for sure. I never really liked the guy anyway.
