- David NHawthorne, CA4,425 contributionsThe Saarbrücken old town (Altstadt) has a typical German combination of shops and marketplaces, restaurants and outdoor cafes, and historical buildings and fountains. Although it is not as impressive as the Heidelberg Altstadt, for example, it is definitely worth a visit if you are on your way somewhere in Saarbrücken on foot. I chose to have lunch here while walking to the Historical Museum from the train station. There you find tombs of the old counts of Saarbrücken which were relatives of the actual King Family of the Netherlands. - David NHawthorne, CA4,425 contributionsWhile you are in the neighborhood visiting the Historical Museum or the Castle, I recommend stopping in at this little church. Originally, it was the St. Nicholas Church, built in the 15th Century with many renovations over the years. It was almost completely destroyed on October 5th, 1944, in an Allied bombing raid. It was then rebuilt by the local presbytery from 1952 - 1958. Today, it is a museum of Christian art (as of 2004). The Saarlandhalle, with its imposing facade, modern architecture, and world-class amenities and facilities, was a perfect venue for this very important and prestigious world-title event of the International Table Tennis Federation.
