John Jacob (Jay) Peterson (born November 3, 1972) is an American producer and entertainment executive, especially known for unscripted and documentary content.

Peterson is currently the President.[1] of Boat Rocker Media, Unscripted. Boat Rocker is an independent, integrated global entertainment company that creates, produces and distributes premium content and brands for all media platforms. Boat Rocker has offices in the U.S., Canada, England, and China.

Previously, Peterson co-founded Matador Content, a full-service content production company with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Matador’s productions include: the Emmy-nominated series Lip Sync Battle, the Hulu scripted series, What Would Diplo Do?, the Netflix scripted series, The Who Was? Show, the HBO documentary Wig, and Apple TV+’s Billie Eilish documentary, The World’s A Little Blurry[2]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Born in 1972, Peterson, the oldest of three children, spent his early life in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1983, his family relocated to Southern Colorado. Known as “J.J.” throughout his youth, Peterson graduated from the Fountain Valley School of Colorado in 1991. Sports were a major part of his adolescence, and he earned varsity letters in soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse all four years of high school, and was one of the first inductees into the Fountain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame.

He went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in 1996 and, after spending five years working in the entertainment industry, earned a Master’s in Business Administration from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2003.

Early Career[edit]

Peterson moved to New York City in 1996 and began his television career on the news desk at ABC. He subsequently moved to MTV Networks, managing budgets on the production management team, before becoming a producer for VH1 during the cable network’s heyday. He worked on the first episodes of Behind the Music, Pop Up Video and Divas Live. He remained there for several years, advancing to Director of Production and Development and serving as the Executive in Charge of Production on shows such as Storytellers, Hard Rock Live and the Divas Live franchise.

After departing MTV Networks in 2001 and earning his Master’s degree, Peterson joined a former VH1 colleague, and producer Jerry Kupfer as a principal at K2 Pictures. It was there that he produced projects such as The Concert for America (NBC), Sundance Festival Dailies (Sundance Channel), and the documentary Same Sex America (Showtime), Pete Rose on Trial (ESPN) and Classic Now (ESPN).

In 2009, he became the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Production and Development at Original Media where he developed and produced several hit television series, including History’s Swamp People, Paramount Network’s Ink Master, AMC’s Comic Book Men, and Discovery’s Dual Survival. He expanded Original’s portfolio into new categories such as sports (MMA Uncensored Live), talk (The Gayle King Show), music (MTV’s Unplugged) and live television (Rihanna Live for MTV, VH1 and Palladia), and strengthened the franchises and economics of existing shows such as Storm Chasers, La Ink and The Rachel Zoe Project.

Matador Content[edit]

In 2012, Peterson left Original Media to start Matador Content with fellow producer and longtime friend, Todd Lubin. Backed by private equity funding from the TPG growth fund, Matador opened offices in both New York and Los Angeles. In its first eight years, Matador has produced over thirty-four series for television as well as sports and feature documentary specials, virtual reality content and digital programs across multiple networks. Perhaps most notable is the five-season, Emmy-nominated series Lip Sync Battle, hosted LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen, and co-produced with Jimmy Fallon, who had pioneered the format[3] on The Tonight Show. Lip Sync Battle was nominated three consecutive years for an Emmy for Outstanding Structured Reality Program[4]. Other projects include Wig[5], the HBO documentary about the origins of the iconic drag festival Wigstock, which premiered[6] at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, The World's A Little Blurry a feature film chronicling the rise of superstar Billie Eilish (Apple TV+), as well as the docu-series Dear…[7](Apple TV+).

Matador’s output has shown an impressive range across networks and genres, from the Emmy-winning original scripted series The Who Was? Show (Netflix) to documentary films, including the Emmy nominated[8] Banksy Does New York (HBO), Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story[9] (The Orchard), Love, Cecil (Amazon), The Rape of Recy Taylor[10] (Starz) and Give Me Future (Apple TV+), which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival[11].

Other productions include Boy Band (ABC), the spinoff Lip Sync Battle Shorties (Nickelodeon), Great Minds with Dan Harmon (History), Netflix’s Fightworld and Hero Ink (A&E). Through these projects, Matador has established its reputation as an innovative full service content creation studio across the U.S. and Canada.

In November 2018, Peterson and Lubin sold Matador to Boat Rocker Media[12], the global entertainment company that creates, produces, and distributes content and brands internationally. Matador remains an independently operating entity under the Boat Rocker umbrella. Boat Rocker has expanded Peterson’s responsibility to include unscripted content across all of Boat Rocker Studios.

Personal Life[edit]

Following a longstanding love affair with thoroughbred horses and Kentucky, Peterson bought 20 barrels of bourbon in 2010 with friends Charles Fulford and Sean Josephs[23], and relocated them to Bardstown, Kentucky to age. In anticipation of their first small batch bottling in 2014, they successfully branded their whiskey Pinhook, an old Kentucky term for buying young thoroughbreds and selling them for a profit at maturity. After a series of small releases, the team decided to scale the nascent business. Pinhook bourbon and rye is now sold in 26 states, and it has won multiple Gold Medals at the San Francisco Worlds Spirits Competition.

Jay Peterson resides in New York City with his wife Alice, two daughters, Vivian and Frances, and dog, Rizzo.
