About Bessemer | Schools, Demographics, Things to Do - Homes.com
Tucked into the Jones Valley at the edge of the Appalachian Chain's foothills, Bessemer is a city rich in history and home to a diverse blend of industries. Founded in 1887, this city once thrived through iron ore manufacturing. A lot of that history can still be explored in the area's historic downtown, the Bessemer Hall of History and the Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park. Bessemer packs in plenty to do, see and eat—all while offering a wide variety of home styles, prices and sizes.
Prices vary dramatically
Full-brick ranch-style homes, Craftsman-style houses, stick houses, contemporary new constructions and larger estates can all be found in this city, with prices ranging from $30,000 to $895,000.

The Ready to Work Program partners high schoolers with local employers
Children attend Greenwood Elementary, then go on to attend Bessemer City Middle School, while teenagers attend Bessemer High School. All three schools have an overall Niche grade of C-minus. Jess Lanier High is home to the Bessemer Center for Technology and the Ready to Work Program, which partner students with nearby employers like Amazon.
Home to the "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statue
At DeBardeleben Park visitors can imagine "The Marvel City" as it used to be, surrounded by buildings dating back to the 1890s. Named after the city's founder, this park is the spot for lovely scenic strolls, picnics or bike rides. The famous "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statue stands proudly in the park—a monument to World War I soldiers. Several events are held in the park, like live music concerts, holiday parades and the wildly popular annual Bob Sykes Blues and BBQ Festival.
The endangered watercress darter fish has a home in the Watercress Darter National Wildlife Refuge. This picturesque refuge features Thomas Spring, a beautiful pond where these rare colorful fish can live peacefully. Photography and hiking are popular pastimes at the refuge, while fishing is strictly prohibited. Meanwhile, history and mother nature intersect at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park. Visitors are transported back in time to the 1900s, surrounded by abundant natural beauty. The scenic tree-lined valley was a plentiful source of ore, and today visitors to the park can check out exhibits illustrating the lives of blacksmiths, craftsmen and millers. They can also hop on a train to the pioneer farm and cotton gin. Beyond exploring the area's storied past, locals can explore the park's hiking trails, taking in native flora and fauna. For more local history, residents flock to the Bessemer Hall of History. Located in an old railroad depot, this museum displays artifacts, documents, photography and furniture of the area, dating back to the 1800s. Here, find Martin Luther King's cell block door, a World War II typewriter taken from Adolf Hitler's Eagles Nest, a 1911 Excelsior Motorcycle and many other rare artifacts.

Greek-influenced entrees since the early 20th-century
When all that exploration builds up an appetite, Bessemer has many great eateries to choose from. Considered a historic landmark, Bright Star Restaurant has been serving Greek-influence steak and seafood entrees since 1907. Vintage photographs of former patrons decorate the walls of this iconic restaurant. Another local staple is Bob Sykes Bar-B-Q, which has been serving legendary barbecue doused in their award-winning sauce since 1957. When residents want to make their own dinner, the Bessemer Farmers Market is popular. Fresh produce, locally hatched eggs and goods from local vendors are found at the market, which meets seasonally at Bessemer Recreation Center.

Several events are held in the park, like live music concerts, holiday parades and the wildly popular annual Bob Sykes Blues and BBQ Festival.
One of the country's last juke joints
Lovers of the blues flock to Gip's Place, a juke joint that has attracted some of the biggest names in music, like Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Chuck Berry. Berry even gifted the owner Gip Gibson one of his guitars. Gibson himself is a local legend, creating a space for dancing, drinking and incredible live blues performances. This place is the real deal—one of the last real juke joints in the country. The walls of this beloved hole-in-the-wall are covered in posters of Muddy Waters, Slim Harpo and other blues legends. A true hidden gem, this local spot can be challenging to find. Rest assured, the reward at the end is worth the trouble.
Bessemer has the Alabama Adventure & Splash Adventure Water Park for family-friendly fun, offering roller coasters, wild water slides and laser mazes. There's also the Autobahn Indoor Speedway, which is sure to get adrenaline pumping.
