This reissue of Chronicle: His Greatest Stax Hits was augmented by the inclusion of four tracks (the first four) from Eddie’s 1969 Compilation Rare Stamps; making available his biggest ever hit and immortal “Knock on Wood”, the driving “On a Saturday Night”, the Flamenco flirting and anthemic “Raise Your Hand” and the sensual “Love is a Doggone Good thing” with its beefy brass arrangements, certainly was an effective bait.
The original collection did admittedly included all the hits, major and minor, Floyd recorded for Stax, a testimony to his uncommon vocal talent, and above average songwriting skills; with the exception of Sam Cooke’s “Bring it on Home to Me” (which is given a smoking up-tempo treatment), whom along with Otis Redding he esteemed as his major influences, and of Smokey Robinson’s “My Girl” (which is given the exact dose of passion such a platonic romance deserves),every other song had been penned by Floyd, most of them in collaboration with Steve Cropper, who also lent an hand in the production and contributed with his trademark guitar vocabulary on many tracks.
Naturally, some songs do carry that saccharine stigma that determinately contributes to push them up the charts, but with the punchy and Cropper magic-laden “Blood is Thicker than Water”, the rapped, Funky and festive “Soul Street”, the West-Africa hip-shaking of “Don’t Tell Your Mama”, the Temptations glossiness inflected “Check me Out” and many others, there’s enough material herein to satisfy the fans, to please the non-unconditional listeners and to eventually lure many casually passers-by to large circle of admirers.
