From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of the Booker Prize–winning novel The Remains of the Day comes an inspired sequence of stories as affecting as it is beautiful.

With the clarity and precision that have become his trademarks, Kazuo Ishiguro interlocks five short pieces of fiction to create a world that resonates with emotion, heartbreak, and humor. Here is a fragile, once famous singer, turning his back on the one thing he loves; a music junky with little else to offer his friends but opinion; a songwriter who inadvertently breaks up a marriage; a jazz musician who thinks the answer to his career lies in changing his physical appearance; and a young cellist whose tutor has devised a remarkable way to foster his talent. For each, music is a central part of their lives and, in one way or another, delivers them to an epiphany.

Review

"Expressive and harmonic, delicate yet substantive. . . . [A] true virtuoso performance."--Christian Science Monitor

"In both craft and substance Nocturnes reveals a master at work."--
Seattle Times

"Immaculate."--
Los Angeles Times

"Ishiguro is, as always, a master of style and tone . . . . [
Nocturnes] build[s] into a melancholic soundtrack. We're helpless to do anything but listen."--Time Out New York

"Tight and assured. . . . Suffused with sympathy." -
-Time

“These stories recall Ishiguro's best known novel,
The Remains of the Day. . . . By now it is clear that this exquisite stylist is serious in his pursuit of a minimal - perhaps even universal - mode of expression for the emotional experiences that define our lives as human.”—The Times, London

“Superb . . . a deceptively plain and easy style that rides on the surfaces of manners and decorous behavior.”—
Providence Journal

"A brilliant new book . . . art, its dangers, its pains and its gaiety [are] all topics seriously considered in this accomplished book."-
Frank Kermode, London Review of Books

"Ishiguro blends musical concepts with their literary counterparts in his latest work, and
Nocturnes has the . . . quality of a song cycle with recurring themes and motifs developed in different prose keys."--Bookmarks magazine

A must-read book by Ishiguro. I'm always surprised how deep Ishiguro is able dig into human soul with few words. Short but deep at the same time. Only 5 stories but all of them worth reading. Written down in a simple style despite the complexity of the stories. Definitely a master class of writing.

I love Ishiguro so be prepared for some gushing. This book was a departure for Ish. The day I got the book I sat down and told myself I'd read the first story. It was short and entertaining so I began the second story. I read a few pages and found myself chuckling and thinking I must be misunderstanding. Ishiguro is usually so lush and evocative. He makes me think and feel new things or at least feel them and think them with a new depth and understanding. After a few more pages I was falling off my chair with laughter. I don't remember when I've laughed so hard outside of P.G. Wodehouse. My laughter, however, derived from pathos and a dawning of what the odd interactions between an estranged couple and their bumbling houseguest were about. `Come Rain or Come Shine' wasn't fluff. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of other glimmers of such raucous humor in Ishiguro's work and can only come up with the Hugh Grant character in the film version of "Remains of the Day" with his dodging behind trees trying to overhear conversations. I don't remember that bit of humor from the book though. With "Never Let Me Go" it felt like Ishiguro reached into my chest, grabbed and twisted my heart until he finally pulled it out. In "When We Were Orphans" he had me running through rubble trying to escape the bad guys. "Nocturnes" was sheer enjoyment. The other stories in the collection don't reach the same level of amusement as 'Come Rain or Come Shine' nor, I'm sure, are the meant to but they're very good.

I am not a short-story lover, but I am an Ishiguro fan - his writing is so good, he makes it all work so very well! With Ishiguro there is always a twist, things are not exactly what they seem, apparently simple characters and plots turn out to be actually deep and complex, a subtle but real insight into human nature. I was really taken by the first story in particular...

Ishiguro's brilliance requires time, something the short story genre doesn't have. The tragic realizations that seem to conclude everything he writes are here, but the characters don't develop depth over time.

This is the first book I have read by Kazuo Ishiguro. His unique approach to the short story format is refreshing and asks the reader to engage in the piece differently. Each story revolves around music and nightfall and particular symbols can be seen consistently throughout the piece (I won't give any away!). Each individual piece on its own is entertaining, but together, these five shorts weave a new story that can only be read with careful attention to literary devices used in the shorts.

although i enjoy & respect him as a writer... these short stories were excellent... but never had a satisfactory ending... especially the last one. what happened? could you give me a hint? i understand "open" endings... but they were like someone stole his pencil... i give him 4 stars...because of the dissatisfaction i came away with... My wife is an ardent reader and likes to have a real book in her hands. She decided to read the book after seeing a special on him on PBS and reading a NYT book review about it. She has really become a fan.

There is no greater short story written than come rain come shine. What a treat this collection is. Especially for those who love music. And literature. And literature with music melded into it like strawberries in cream.
