Is Anthony Edward’s the greatest Minnesota sports player if we win a ring this year

WINNESOTA

Going simply off resumes since I don’t watch Hockey or Baseball I think it would Kirby Pucketts but other than that he would be the greatest

Chill lol

Kirby has 2 rings, a Hall of Fame nod, and arguably the greatest MN sports moment (in arguably the greatest World Series) of all time. Dude is a legend.

Unless Ant brings home a ring off a Herculean game 7 performance, he’s not touching that.

Yeah no shit lol. Kirby is way too high on the list to overcome with one ring on a stacked team.

Also, there is way too much ring talk. The Wolves ain't even out of the second round. Some little white kid at work was like we got a straight pass to the finals. Y'all are smoking hard crack man. We're one refball series away from no ring. Please just shut up lol.

I ain't doing another mall of america singalong to get shit on from a great height. MN sports fans are fucking weird.

Harsh, but fair.

Facing OKC in the WCF would concern me since Shai gets treated like D Wade in the ‘06 Finals like every game lol.

Ant would need more than 1 ring to pass Kirby at this current point in time but honestly he'd be on his way there... And I do think it's important to note the circumstances with Minnesota sports having not won a Championship since 1991 and the fact Ant is 22 years old and becoming the face of the NBA. He'd immediately vault himself into immortal status and IMO goes directly into the top 5 pro sports players in Minnesota history

u/BraveNewSycophant avatar

With a stacked team? He'd need about 4. Kirby has one of the most memorable plays and two of the most memorable WS in baseball history.

Jack Morris’s game 7 in 1991 is the greatest MN Sports performance of all time. Kirby helped get to a game 7 with his game 6 heroics, but what Jack did was unbelievable and hasn’t come close to being matched in all of baseball.

He has a ways to go to reach "and we'll see you tomorrow night" Kirby Puckett.

Man, George Mikan won 5 titles, and rules were changed because he was to dominant.

It’s Puckett and it’s not even close. Puckett was to Minnesota what Jordan was to Chicago in terms of fans being behind a player. It’s hard to explain if you weren’t around for his time, but man. No disrespect to Ant but Puckett was in his own stratosphere here.

I had several different friends growing up who named their dogs Kirby.

My friend called him Tubby Bucket

With a ring he'd only have 4 more to go to catch George Mikan with the most NBA championships in Minnesota history.

Like others say we can pump the brakes a bit and still love Ant

u/Knightbear49 avatar

Don’t tell Lakers fans that Minnesota won 5 of their Championships…

u/hoesb4bros123 avatar

muh 17 championships? The Los Angeles lakers have 11, or is is 12. Doesn't matter. The Minneapolis lakers have 5, the LOS ANGELES LAKERS have 11/12

So we do count those MPLS Lakers titles along with the 2 with the Twins right?

I always assumed we didn’t count those for whatever reason since people usually only mention the Twins titles when discussing Minnesota sports history.

u/Worried_Amphibian_54 avatar

I think so... I mean the Target center has a big statue of Mikan right there in the main entrance.

u/DupeyTA avatar

I know I only count the Twins' ones (as well as the Lynx's) because I wasn't around for the Minneapolis Lakers' ones. However, I'll be damned if I let anyone tell me those 5 Mikan ones aren't Minneapolis'.

Once Nintendo creates a whole franchise around Ant, then we can talk

Let’s tap the brakes a bit. Love me some Ant, but Kirby Puckett, Fran Tarkenton, Bobby Smith, Bud Grant (of Minneapolis Lakers fame, in addition to coaching the Vikings,) Kevin Garnett, and Bob Lurtsema would like to enter the chat.

Bob Lurtsema? Seriously?

Well he would have entered the chat, not been invited

That’s true! Dude loved to talk.

Not seriously. I was injecting a little levity into my reply.

Benchwarmer Bob’s!

Gotta imagine winning a ring passes KG for many

Love Ant, and it could definitely happen someday, but no.

u/PurpleWolferine avatar

He would be well on his way !!

u/Rapsculio avatar

Not if JJ McCarthy also wins us a Superbowl

u/AbeFroman-86 avatar

Whomever wins this town a Superbowl will have a 30 foot statue of them erected, a street named after them, a key to the city, and someone's first born child.

Wolves, wild, twins.... All great to see succeed, but a Vikings Superbowl trophy will put this state into a seizure.

No love for Dimitrius Underwood?

u/SillyDadBod avatar

Greatest MN basketball player, yes. Overall? No.

u/keanancarlson avatar

Greatest Timberwolves player yes. He would be in the conversation for the state for sure, but a lot of prolific athletes never win titles

u/Timberwolves16-0 avatar

Since we doing hypotheticals, a world exists where Timberwolves win the championship and KAT or Rudy win WCF MVP and Finals MVP. Or Naz or Mike etc

u/karlwhethers avatar

I love Naz and Mike but let’s be real.

u/keanancarlson avatar

If it’s not Ant then it’s likely KAT, but yeah. It would be similar to Iggy winning it in 2015 even though Curry was clearly the best player on the team

Maya Moore would like a word.

Kevin McHale deserves to be on this list.

u/Skolcialism avatar

Here’s the definitive answer by gender

Best athlete from here: Dave Winfield, Suni Lee

Best Athlete who is from here and played here: Joe Mauer, Lindsay Whalen

Best athlete who played here but isn’t from here: KG, Maya Moore

Put some respect on Randy Moss’s name. He was a phenomenal athlete.

u/Skolcialism avatar

Kg mvp and longevity puts him over moss for me

u/FridgesArePeopleToo avatar
Edited

Alan Page and Fran Tarkenton are clearly ahead of KG and both also won mvps

u/Skolcialism avatar

great takes, didnt weigh them

More replies

Tough to argue that. But I’m saying Moss should be on the short list.

2nd after Puckett, Goat after impending 3-peat.

u/gOPHER3727 avatar

If that happens he would be ON PACE to be that, and could be that within a few short years. But he would not have earned that title yet.

Yes. Easily imo.

The obvious answer is yes. Kirby was great, but its still baseball.
