SIM Cards in Canada: The Best Prepaid Plans | 2024 Guide

Canada, known for its stunning landscapes, love for ice hockey, and encounters with friendly moose that might leave marks on your car, stands as the second-largest country globally. From canoeing along Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, to strolling peaceful Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada provides travelers with many unforgettable experiences that they will treasure forever.

In This Guide Show

Traveling in Canada is truly rewarding with so much to see and experience. Toronto's iconic CN Tower stands as an icon, while Quebec City's Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac showcases historical grandeur. These are just two highlights, as Canada offers plenty more attractions that await discovery—truly making this country an alluring tourist spot!

Though Canada may seem attractive, its allure does not come without budget considerations like some Southeast Asian nations. Living costs, including domestic flights and mobile data rates for prepaid Canada SIM card users, rank among some of the highest globally. Surprisingly, even compared to the United States, Canada's mobile data costs can be significantly higher.

However, amid these challenges, obtaining a Canadian SIM card remains relatively affordable. Major carriers like Rogers, Telus, Bell, Freedom Mobile, Chatr Mobile, Fido, PC Mobile, Public Mobile, Petro-Canada Mobility, and Virgin Plus (formerly Mobile) offer SIM cards starting at 10 CAD, with Koodo and Lucky Mobile priced at 20 CAD. These SIM cards are readily available at airports, including Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ), ensuring convenient access for travelers.

Use the Wise Currency Converter tool for up-to-date exchange rates between the Canadian Dollar and your currency.

Despite the reasonable initial cost of SIM cards, data plans can quickly add up. For instance, acquiring 1.5 GB of data may require a minimum investment of 29 CAD with potential speed throttling by some providers, a frustrating reality for many Canadians navigating the telecom market.

In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the intricacies of purchasing and using a SIM card in Canada, equipping you with essential knowledge for your travels. Let us dive in.

Buying a SIM Card in Canada

Anyone residing or visiting Canada can purchase a SIM card without restrictions from major mobile operators like Rogers, Telus, Bell, and Freedom Mobile as well as from Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) like Chatr Mobile, Fido Koodo Mobile, Lucky PC Mobile, Petro-Canada Mobility, Public Mobile, SpeakOut 7-Eleven, and Virgin Plus (formerly Virgin Mobile).

To maximize the experience with your Canadian SIM card, it is also necessary to have a mobile phone that supports all frequencies used within Canada. Furthermore, having an unlocked device with no SIM lock functionality will facilitate effortless use.

Can You Use Your Phone in Canada?

Canada relies mainly on GSM technology for mobile communications, making CDMA phones incompatible with Canadian networks. While most phones nowadays support GSM technology, understanding your phone's compatibility beyond Canada requires understanding ITU Regions.

ITU Regions categorize frequency usage worldwide. Canada falls under American frequencies (ITU Region 2), which covers South, Central, and North America SIM cards as well as the Caribbean region. Phones designed specifically to operate seamlessly within Region 2 countries usually function smoothly there as well.

Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania operate under European frequencies (ITU Regions 1 & 3). Phones manufactured within these regions will work seamlessly across Region 1 & 3 territories for increased compatibility between phone models from these areas and country frequency standards in use in these territories.

Travelers or residents from Regions 1 & 3, particularly low- to medium-end devices without Tri-Band or Quad-Band support, who use Canadian networks may encounter obstacles and connectivity limitations to slower networks like 3G or 2G service.

Medium- to high-end devices featuring Tri-Band or Quad-Band support may still access Canadian networks with some restrictions; such devices have access to 4G/LTE networks in Canada for enhanced connectivity and performance.

Mobile Operators, Networks & Frequencies in Canada

Canada boasts a robust mobile communications landscape, featuring four major nationwide mobile operators and nine Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that cater to prepaid services, ensuring convenient access for travelers:

  • Rogers (Wireless)
  • Telus (Mobility)
  • Bell (Mobility) Canada
  • Freedom Mobile Canada
  • Chatr Mobile (Rogers Sub-Brand)
  • Fido (Solutions) Canada (Rogers Sub-Brand)
  • Koodo Mobile (Telus Sub-Brand)
  • Lucky Mobile Canada (Bell Canada MVNO)
  • PC Mobile Canada (Bell Canada MVNO)
  • Petro-Canada Mobility (Rogers MVNO)
  • Public Mobile Canada (Telus Sub-Brand)
  • SpeakOut (Wireless) 7-Eleven (Rogers MVNO)
  • Virgin Plus (formerly Virgin Mobile Canada – Bell Canada Sub-Brand)

These operators utilize various frequencies across different generations of mobile technology in Canada:

  • 2G: 850 MHz (Rogers only)
  • 3G: 850 MHz & 1700 MHz
  • 4G/LTE: 600 MHz (Band 71), 700 MHz (Band 12, Band 13, Band 17 & Band 29), 850 MHz (Band 5), 1700 MHz (Band 4 & Band 66), 1900 MHz (Band 2), and 2600 MHz (Band 7 & Band 38)
  • 5G NR: While 5G NR frequencies such as 600 MHz (n71), 1700 MHz (n66), 2500 MHz (n41), 2600 MHz (n38), and 3500 MHz (n78) are available, they are not yet accessible for prepaid customers.

Can You Use Your Phone Abroad?

To verify your phone's compatibility with Canadian networks, you can visit Kimovil or Will My Phone Work. While the latter is user-friendly, it may not cover newer phones or 5G NR compatibility.

Ensure your phone is unlocked; otherwise, you will be restricted to your home operator's SIM card, necessitating international data roaming or purchasing a compatible unlocked phone.

For a detailed understanding of international roaming, refer to my comprehensive guide. Additionally, learn about the hidden reasons behind expensive roaming charges in this insightful article.

A Note about 4G HSPA+ (between Ops & 5G)

Before the widespread adoption of 4G/LTE in Canada, some mobile operators marketed HSPA+ as “4G HSPA+” to create the impression of 4G/LTE experiences, although HSPA+ is technically 3.75G and not true 4G/LTE.

It is crucial to understand that 4G HSPA+ is essentially fast 3G rather than genuine 4G/LTE, despite ongoing mentions or highlights of 4G HSPA+ coverage by mobile operators.

While the major nationwide operators now focus on true 4G/LTE networks covering over 90% of the Canadian population, some flanker brands, MVNOs, and resellers still emphasize 4G HSPA+ coverage.

If offered a reasonably priced 4G HSPA+ plan, bear in mind that it may only provide 3G speeds, often capped at 3 Mbps. As technology evolves and 5G NR becomes more available, you should not be surprised if mobile operators market 4G/LTE+ as 5G LTE+.

VoLTE & VoWiFi in Canada

VoLTE (Voice over LTE, also known as HD Voice) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi, also known as WiFi calling) are available in Canada and offered by all major nationwide mobile operators. However, these services are not accessible to prepaid SIM card customers.

For prepaid users, making calls in Canada will result in a downgrade to 2G or 3G networks, unlike customers with VoLTE-supported operators who can maintain higher-quality calls over LTE.

VoWiFi enables calls over a WiFi connection rather than relying solely on cellular networks, providing an alternative option for voice communication.

5G NR in Canada

Commercial 5G NR has been accessible in Canada since early 2020, operating on the networks of Rogers, Telus, Bell, and Freedom Mobile. However, 5G NR remains inaccessible to prepaid customers, including those using MVNO services, within Canada.

Best SIM Card in Canada

If you are looking for the best SIM card in Canada, I would suggest going with Telus or Koodo. Telus has exceptional coverage and boasts the fastest speeds nationwide. On the other hand, Koodo offers access to the Telus network (excluding 5G NR) at a more budget-friendly price point.

It is important to note that both Telus and Koodo place a speed cap of 100 Mbps on prepaid customers, which can affect activities requiring high data speeds.

Best eSIM in Canada

I would choose an eSIM anytime over a traditional SIM card, no matter which country I am visiting. There is something about running around looking for a physical store that does not sit right with me. Plus, I would have to open up my SIM slot on the phone, which is not always ideal.

When it comes to eSIM options for prepaid customers in Canada, Telus, Bell, Koodo, and Virgin Plus have you covered. They offer eSIMs, which can be a convenient choice for managing your mobile services. However, it is worth noting that Rogers, Freedom Mobile, Fido, and Public Mobile currently do not offer eSIMs to prepaid customers.

The cost of mobile data in Canada is notoriously high, making it a significant consideration for users. This will be discussed in more detail in the Canada Mobile Speeds, Mobile Internet Prices & Insight section.

Even when compared to many Caribbean countries, which are island countries, Canada's rates can seem exorbitant. Additionally, some mobile operators throttle prepaid speeds, particularly flanker brands and MVNOs, leading to speeds as low as 3 Mbps in some cases. This is surprising considering even Cuba, with its technological limitations, can offer faster speeds.

Interestingly, international travelers roaming on Canadian networks, excluding some American and Mexican SIM cards, do not typically face such aggressive speed throttling. This also applies to travel eSIM providers like Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad.

For example, you might have to pay at least 29 CAD for 1.5 GB of data in Canada, excluding the SIM card cost. In contrast, Tuque Mobile eSIM (Airalo) offers 5 GB for 25 USD, Holafly eSIM provides 10 GB for 34 USD, and Nomad eSIM offers 5 GB for 24 USD, all at more affordable rates.

Not to get too in-depth on eSIMs, but if you want more information including some unlimited data offerings, please check out my Airalo eSIM, Holafly eSIM, and Nomad eSIM articles.

If your phone supports an eSIM, opting for one of these travel eSIMs can save you a significant amount of money, especially considering the data offerings compared to local prepaid SIM card options.

If your phone does not support eSIMs, you can explore international SIM cards for Canada, which start at 45 CAD but offer more data than local options and can be used in Mexico and the United States as well.

While there are various eSIM providers, I have personally tried and had positive experiences with Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad. They not only offer reasonable prices but also reliable services, making them worth considering for travelers.
