      Critics Consensus

Apostle resists easy scares in favor of a steady, slow-building descent into dread led by a commanding central performance from Dan Stevens.

Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting Evans departs from his usual action fare to weave a gripping story centered around unique Pagan-like mythology steeped in blood and sacrifice. It's folk horror, but with a new level of brutality and viscera unlike most of its ilk. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 17, 2018 Full Review Dan Jolin Empire Magazine A muddled Wicker Man-inspired horror that has bursts of style, but fails to find depth beneath its blood-spewing surface. Rated: 2/5 Oct 15, 2018 Full Review Tasha Robinson The Verge But for the most part, it's a breathlessly oppressive experience, a dark and sometimes strikingly beautiful film that lives up to its most obvious cinematic forefathers. Oct 13, 2018 Full Review Kate Boyle InSession Film Apostle leaves a lot to be desire despite great potential. Rated: C Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The blood-soaked and metaphorically charged second half is sure to leave some squirming in their seats. But it’s fitting in this examination of oppression under the guise of religion and the costs of misguided faith. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture The results absolutely deliver, and Evans creates an effectively creepy setting that feels authentic and tactile. Archie F The first 40 mins or so was extremely captivating and he me interested with great world building. I finished the film with questions unanswered. It is certainly a gore like film with unsettling scenes. I got a bit frustrated at parts due to the crazy writing. I sat their thinking, "why did you do that?". Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Emilliano Jr S I thought I was watching The Wicker Man. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Jemima J If you like gore, you'll like this. If you like good storytelling and in depth characters, you won't. I turned off Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement to watch this and I wish I hadn't. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Jason B Spoilers* First half of the movie absolutely amazing the squandered at a terrible predictable ending. You can see they had no idea what to do after the middle of the film. I wanted to know more about Thomas but we got nothing but a weird 29 second flash back of Asians burning a cross on him. Who were the Asians? Why did they do that? Where the hell was he? Idk. Where was their mother? Not explained, why was he away from the father and didn't have a good relationship with him? Not explained. He died at the end and we get more questions left unanswered then the begining of the movie. Waste of 2 hours I will never get back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Milo C I'm generally not a fan of supernatural thrillers, but this is a story mostly of people behaving badly with just a little supernatural thrown in to make it a little more creepy. Not good for "sensitive" souls, as it comes with with plenty of blood, but not overdone IMO. Well done cinematography. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Alec B Could have been great if some the ideas and characters were fleshed out a little more but Evans can still stage an violent set piece like no one else, and this is a mostly a wild ride when it sticks to the basics of its genre.
