We had excellent, attentive service from Andy and Monica who were the butlers assigned to our villa. Both of them checked in on us to see if we needed anything and helped us with dinner reservations, bringing extra coat hangers to our room, arranging in-room dining, and helping us during check out. They were always there for us and always cheerful and welcoming.
The resort is stunning and you can spend hours walking, riding bikes, and exploring the extensive grounds. We can’t wait to return next year!
The service, attention to detail, and collaborative approach with staff really set this place apart. I hate to give any specific person a shout out because they were all consistently friendly and helpful, but everyone will appreciate their butlers. Ours were Amber and Daniel, both made our stay comfortable and memorable. I also want to recognize Edgar and team at LaFondita, a small restaurant on the Mayakoba complex you need to visit. They had a real passion and set up a special dinner for our group that was the highlight of our stay. Also, thanks to Roy who was great ambassador for the hotel.
If you want to deal with a longer review, read on. A few tips that may help your journey:
• Ample beach & pool chairs, but don’t roll in at 2 pm thinking you will get best seat in the house
• Go to LaFondita, authentic Mexican, simple menu, great value, elegant plaza
• Shrimp taco’s at Rosewood beach bar were the best we’ve had anywhere
• Book a 45-minute evening cruise (up to 8 people) around Lagoons.
• Go to the Banyon Tree via free water taxi for dinner, a stunning property
• Burn off the hangover biking the entire compound via the nature trail
• We never needed to convert to Pesos as US currency was fine
• There is a service fee, but bring some small change and share generously
A final word on COVID here and Mexico in general. The spacious nature of resort areas, safety protocols I experienced, and scaled occupancy made it as safe as anywhere in the US. My comment on Mexico in general is too many people from the US have an outsized fear of the country – if you love to travel and hold this sentiment you will miss out. There are not drug cartels running the streets of resort towns nor is someone waiting to do you harm. The people throughout the country are hardworking, humble, inquisitive, and take pride in what they do. Their hospitality and good nature are amazing.
Upon arrival, you are greeted with flower bracelets, scented washcloths and fresh juice. We were told our room would not be ready by check in but were presented with a hospitality villa to use until our room was ready along with a complementary lunch. We went to the beach Shack restaurant, which was so awesome, we ate the same thing the following day!
For dinner, we decided to try Saffron, Banyan’s Thai Restaurant. The waiter knowable about vegans and simply discussed dinner options with the chef. The chef made raw spring rolls for our appetizer and made me a vegetable curry dish without fish sauce and totally vegan. You are presented table-side with six rice options for you to choose from to accompany your dish. The food was outstanding and so was the service. We ended up eating here again during our stay.
We were brought to our room after dinner and were blown away. As you pull up, you can see each villa has bicycles with their villa number on it. When you open the door, you step into a courtyard with a glowing pool towards the far end of the courtyard, the sleeping quarters on one side and the living room on the other side – breathtaking. We booked the villa with a massage porch which is located on the rooftop.
We stayed for 3 ½ days utilizing the beach, boat tour, bicycles, rainforest, salon and restaurants.
The Banyan Tree is doing it right, they have the appropriate number of workers for each area within the resort, so it is well kept, guests are tended to and everyone just seems happy. We loved our stay so much and can’t wait to come back.
Their staff is top notch. We very much enjoyed cooking Thai cuisine with Chef Roberto, and other members like Porter Eric, Paulette, Carmen, Miguel, Jesus, Baulio, Javier and Edwin, not to mention the front desk staff – Flor and Arlene – made us feel at home and cared for. The cleaning crew were fantastic as well.
In walking along the stretch of beach along on the Mayakoba property, we noticed and were especially pleased that the Bayan Tree gave its residents the most room in spacing the beds out, whereas some other properties confined residents within a closer, tighter area on their beach.
It isn’t cheap but well worth the splurge and with discounts running currently, if you are comfortable traveling, you should seriously think about booking here.
This was my first time staying at one of the many Banyan Tree properties. First, you enter through a private entrance (it's like a gated community) and they are very strict on who is allowed in, so you better be on their list. The entry level villa's (where I stayed) were HUGE, which was a nice surprise. I had an extremely pool for my villa, a small yard and two seating areas. From the pool and back sliding door you can see out to the mangroves and lagoon, which is nice and peaceful and it's completely private! There's a beautiful tub outside, just off of the bathroom area and I asked to have a bath drawn for 10pm, which is when I figured I would be back from dinner and it was AMAZING!!! There are bikes outside of your villa to use on the property, because the property is quite big. You can ride to the beach or restaurants on your bike or you can call for a golf cart to bring around.
The lobby is stunning and overlooks to the lagoon with a very large tree in the middle with beautiful lanterns hanging down. We had the most amazing breakfast while on a boat ride and I highly recommend. They can also do lunch or tapas for dinner too.
What really makes this place top notch and at the top of my list of stays during our trip is the service. Everyone is so on top of things and makes you feel incredibly welcome. Their safety protocols are fantastic and not once did I ever feel unsafe. THere are shoe sanitizer pads in the lobby, sanitizer pumps all over, they take your temperature at check in and give you a little bag with sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, gloves and an extra mask.
We met with Ingo, the food and beverage manager and he told us all about how they keep track of every piece of food, the temperature its sitting in, where it's going and how long - we were super impressed. The water is all filtered, which is nice too.
I would highly recommend Banyan Tree. It was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in and I've been to quite a bit now, especially running a travel agency. It is 5* in every way and appreciative for the stay and hospitality and can't wait to bring my family next time. My kids will go crazy over the pool and bikes alone. And they're a Virtuoso property, which is big bonus for my clients.
Thank you for such a wonderful stay.

The hotel premises are gorgeous. Starting with the lagoon, it’s breathtaking just to stand in the lobby. We took the eco boat tour and saw crocodiles, turtles, birds, and enjoyed a beautiful and relaxing ride.
We went to the spa and enjoyed a relaxing rainforest experience, would definitely recommend it.
The only thing that didn’t always exceed expectations was the service. It was usually very good, but there were times that it was slow. I’m nitpicking because the hotel set such a high standard for guests that this aspect was noticeably not perfect.
I’d still rate it 10/10 and recommend to anyone looking to have a relaxing and breathtaking experience!
The hotel is located in the large Mayakoba area where you can find 3 additional hotels that share a cute Mexican pueblito, nice synthetic tennis courts, an extensive 4 miles nature trail with a cenote to visit, and a very nice couple of golf courses.
You can move around the hotel with your own villa bikes or been transported by the golf cars the hotel provides you with a driver if you are not willing to walk or ride.
Make sure to spend great times at the new beach club and try their food, tequilas, mezcales and enjoy the beautiful white sand beach on their comfortable bed like sun sofas, chairs or flats.
Hotel service is a 7 star rated!. We had a great experience with all employees at the hotel we came across. From the check-in experience to the checkout, you as a guest feel that everyone is working for you to feel as comfortable as possible for what you are paying at this amazing location.
I highly recommend this hotel and we count the days we can visit it again!
The grounds, staff, food, and experience are a cut above the rest. I was on this trip with a friend and our Villa was number 304. Upon arriving at the resort we received cooled towels to freshen up with and fruit infused water to cool off with. Our bellman delivered our bags to the villa. The check in process was quick and easy. We were then escorted to our villa by golf cart and given a tour. Our villa had a master suite, huge master bath, private outdoor bath and shower, walk in closet, living room in a separate space that you accessed by walking across a courtyard that contained our own private pool, hot tub and patio, and a second floor guest suite with two beds, wonderful bathroom, desk, balcony with a view of the canal, walk in closet and more. The villas were very clean and attended to twice a day.
The grounds and beach are amazing, accessible by bicycles that are provided to each villa or by golf carts that are driven by staff to your destination on site. All included.
The ENTIRE resort is pristine in its cleanliness; even the public bathrooms at the beach are clean, fresh smelling, and continuously swept and filled with an abundance of soap and hand sanitizer. It goes without saying that every acre of the complex has wipes and hand purifier dispensers throughout. Housekeeping and turndown service arrive daily and discreetly, and I was amazed at how even at the beach and the pool, there are attendants who refresh your towels if you go in the water. They work with courtesy and class.
I wish I could remember the names of all the employees I encountered who went out of their way for me to provide for and anticipate my every possible need, but it's impossible. I would be remiss if I did not mention Alfredo, who managed a bustling makeshift breakfast buffet (guests and staff) with finesse and composure, breaking a sweat in the heat, but never without a smile on his face. Also, Carlos (I think) at the first-class Banyan spa went out of his way to accommodate my request for specific times. My therapist, Ling, was superb and managed to mix multiple massage therapies to help my body heal and feel amazing. On our last evening, we put in a request to have our special meals served to us at the Saffron waterfront restaurant. The staff treated us like royalty and seated us exactly where we asked, on the water, surrounded by the beauty and the privacy of both the restaurant and the lagoon. They made us feel like the most important people dining there.
I think that's the key to this place. At all times, you feel like everyone's goal is to help you have the most memorable experience at their resort. And you do.
Kudos to the Executive AM Ingo B. who followed up with me after I left and thanked me for my stay. Thanked me??? That's how it is at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
1) The layout of the villa was not great. All the bathrooms were on one level and the space was multi level. That annoyed me. I have a child with special needs who has trouble ambulating so making him go down stairs every time he needed to use the restroom was not ideal.
2) Food was mediocre, nothing special and very very overpriced but that I suppose is to be expected.
3)Service at the beach was not great. My husband and I ordered lunch while on the beach and ended up waiting over an hour for our food. We didn't order anything weird. I had a salad... I suspect they lost our order. I also felt like once the staff noticed we weren't ordering drinks on the beach they weren't attentive.
4)They claim they had a kids club but in reality what it really entailed was a woman who was sometimes on the beach who would do some activities with kids while parents were near by. That wasn't exactly what I was expecting from the website.
5) The biggest issue I had was that someone came into the room while we were there and stole all the cash out of my wallet and my airpods. I suspect it was one of the many people who came in and out of the villa. I have stayed in many resorts and while I know this is always a possibility I have never had it happen before. I suppose it could happen anywhere but it makes me weary about returning here.
I think had the robbery not happened I would have recommended the resort despite the problems. Overall it is very nice. But personally I would have a hard time going back after having someone rob me me while I was in the room. That just seemed very bold of them and very disconcerting.
