This school's administration has failed its students and directly threatened the safety of not only their student body but also multiple members of their faculty for peaceful protest. Multiple students are concussed and injured further from the sheer force of brutality inflicted upon students by police via the President of the college Milagros Peña's authorization. I am disgusted with how this administration has handled its students and would not recommend any parent send their child to this school under this administration unless they are okay with risking their child's first amendment rights in sacrifice of their safety and livelihood. Politics aside, this kind of action toward students is never okay under any circumstance, the weight of the police response under this administration's guide is heavy with violence.
On May 2nd, 2024, current Purchase College President approved for local police and SWAT to enter campus to detain over 70 student and faculty members for a peaceful assembly. As a student who witnessed these events unfold, my social and academic life were drastically impacted due to the administration. Administration locked multiple academic buildings with resources during finals week, locked the Student Center indefinitely, and prevented students from entering campus at unspecified times throughout the weekend. Helicopters, police sirens, and the threatened use of an LRAD disrupted "quiet hours" on campus. The lack of transparency in communication from administration has left me feeling unsure as a current student on this campus. I cannot guarantee my constitutional rights as a student here at SUNY Purchase.
This school failed its students and faculty by bringing in riot police to indiscriminately sweep an area of the campus for a peaceful protest. Faculty members that were simply observers of student safety were tackled to the ground, beaten, and detained. Students were simply sitting on the ground in absolute silence. It’s all on YouTube.
I love the music program, but I wish the school was more receptive to students' freedom of expression and did not continue to get rid of parts of the school that we like, such as artwork that has been deemed "graffiti" and is being taken down after years of being a huge part of student life.
Very good experience so far. The education is specific and targeted on practical things. As a music major I am provided with amazing opportunities and resources that I couldn’t get anywhere else.
While I am definitely enjoying my time at Purchase, there are a few things that I would like to see change. First, the food. There are not enough options for meals and most of time, the food is hit or miss. It is hard to find healthy food as well. Some berries would be greatly appreciated! The dorms are also not great, but could be worse.
I love the professors. They truly try to see their students succeed. One thing I do not like about SUNY Purchase is that the campus buildings are outdated.
SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music is stellar. From the professors to the facilities, the music and education thrives. Although the outward appearance is less than appealing the interior and people make up for it. I would like for the food system to change since most students including myself have had food poisoning. It is the one major con for this school.
I came to Purchase for the community, not the administration. There is so much that needs to be changed from food insecurity to over-policing to lack of accountability with interpersonal violence. What the college doesnt want you to know is that there have been many student movements at the school that have been successful and have given students more rights and more safe spaces. There is a lot to do, but Purchase has so much potential in its creative community.
I liked everything, because I dorm I would like to see better food. The dorming experience is nice and I got to meet new people.
The school is a great one, but also has a lot of downsides. The food is not good and there aren't many healthy eating options on campus.
Purchase students create an atmosphere that feels very welcoming for new students. Coming into a new place away from home is a very daunting task, but the people in the school help make the change feel easier. Purchase being only a short train ride from Manhattan makes this school a great place for young people to experience life in the city while not getting too caught up in it. If I were to change anything about the school it may be hours of the food places on campus. Sometimes its difficult to find food after a late night rehearsal when majority of the food places are closed and the only option available is pizza, it's not awful having to eat pizza though.
I have really enjoyed my experience so far. I think it is a very good college and it's recourses too are very good and accessible.
Your experience at Purchase can really depend on your major and how involved you are in campus life. As a communications major, my experience with the staff has been wonderful, and I have nothing bad to say about any communications professor I have had. I think I gained a lot academically. However, if you do not seek out clubs and events, it is difficult to make friends. The facilities and food is also pretty poor. As for the location, it is best if you can drive; though the loop takes you into White Plains, it can be pretty inconvenient, especially when grocery shopping. I wouldn't recommend Purchase to just anyone, but I think if you are looking for a less expensive option, Purchase could be a decent choice depending on your major and what you are looking for in a school. I still managed to find a community and have a good time despite its flaws.
Great teachers and opportunities outside of class. Would like to see improvements in accessibility, administration communication, and facilities.
My experience with Purchase College has been absolute blessings thus far. Applying through the EOP program has provided me with experiences I’ll be forever grateful for. Miles better than high school in terms of socially, academically, and spiritually. I know the school may not have the best reputation but with the relationships I have built and the blessings I have received, I will always go to bat for this school.
For the prices, Purchase is absolutely worth it. Education wise, the professors I had have all been wonderful and the program I am involved in has been great. In terms of diversity you will find no better and the athletics teams are also on the rise. I personally believe the campus food is overhated because it's pretty solid as a whole. My only complaint is that the apartment dorms are pretty bad as they desperately need to have a cleaning overhaul.
I love SUNY Purchase. I made a good choice coming to this school. It’s really helping me in my major (Painting and Drawing).
SUNY purchase has been a really amazing school so far and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. I get to be around like minded artists and express my creativity on a daily basis. Although the food leaves something to be desired.
Purchase college has amazing psych and arts programs. The professors are all very sweet and understanding, the course material is engaging but not overly hard. The students are nice and the overall vibe is always enjoyable. Purchase also has a beautiful campus, and an aray of good foods at the Hub. Overall a very solid school, highly recommend 👌
