Product Description

Tearing up the streets of London, D.I. Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and his partner George carter (Ben Drew) from the Flying Squad have their own way of operating, and when an old enemy makes a re-appearance on the London crime scene, they will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Directed by Nick Love (The Firm), THE SWEENEY is a stylish, exhilarating action thriller also starring Damian Lewis (Homeland) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America : The First Avenger).

The Sweeney depicts the rough-and-tumble ways of the Flying Squad, the branch of the London police that handles armed robberies, especially when they can catch the criminals in the act. The Sweeney's leader, Jack Regan (Ray Winstone, Sexy Beast), doesn't much care about the rules so long as he gets the job done, which carries into his private life as well--he's having an affair with Nancy Lewis (Hayley Atwell, Captain America), the wife of a superior officer. Is it any surprise that that officer wants to bring him down? When a bank robbery leads to a shootout in Trafalgar Square, Regan finds his career in jeopardy, and only his loyal protégé George Carter (British rapper Ben Drew) can pull him out of it. The Sweeney has a gritty look, all blues and grays and craggy faces, but the plot is a mess; half doesn't make any sense and the half that does doesn't seem to matter. The movie is based on a British TV series of the same name and there seem to be a lot of nods to the show. Perhaps if you're a fan, the movie's emotional terrain will be more comprehensible. Drew and Atwell show a lot of charisma; Winstone is dependably brutish and has some nice comic moments that give his tough-guy persona a little depth. --Bret Fetzer

This was honest in a set aside reality kind of way. I thought that the female as support for the pro-t and was a bad ass was a plus to the story arc, and did not need protection. Almost criminal police acting as they did.. I had to remind myself that suspension of reality was a must. They played into the police brutality as an USA citizen has heard all our lives, not to execution, but the bats were a nice touch, minimal guns at first and worked into it. Brutal force. As an unexpected first watch for an action cop movie, I had to give it 5 stars.

The acting of this British Cop movie is superb, starring the always excellent Hayley Atwell. The movie is fast-paced and heart pounding. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie although there are more than a few scenes that seemed implausible. In fact, one of the most pivotal scenes was predictable and frustrating as the leader of the squad, Regan, puts his team (and London's citizens) in a situation that could only be described as inexcusably irresponsible. The disastrous results of that choice become that much more unforgiveable, making Regan come down in my estimation for the remainder of the film. Despite this, it's a worthy film for the mere fact that, yet again, the Brits show their acting skills are worthy of admiration. NOTE: The strong London Cockney accent is so strong that, at times (and depending on which character is speaking), American audiences may need the benefit of subtitles.

The description said: crime, action, thriller, 5.1 surround. When it loaded the first time it was not 5.1 so I just stopped and restarted. That didn't load right either so I turned off the BD. That didn't help. So I turned off the BD and the A/V then the router (I used Wi-Fi for the BD) then the modem. Modem on, router on, A/V on and BD on. The next load was 5.1. The picture was 2.35:1 so I was getting a perfect theatre (note the spelling because the talking was British and delightful). The story was to my liking. The action was great; especially the car chase scene. The violence was also to my liking: lots of kicking, punching, stabbing and shooting. I also liked the surround sound; it was very effective. It made me realize that the 5.1 surround sound was important in all aspects of the presentation.

Did we ever find out why the woman was killed? No. Starts as something vaguely interesting and turns Idiot car chases with cops and robbers who can't hit the side of a barn. And no one pays for anything.

Started out seeming like it’d be one of those gritty down-in-the-dirt procedurals starring a tough old cop who’s corrupt enough to steal but always gets the job done. The bad side of London, colorful cockney crooks, the sort of thing that Guy Ritchie cut his teeth on.

Kind of like Bad Lieutenant Soho. Grizzled veteran cop cuckolds one of his colleagues with an age-inappropriate co-worker, steals from crime scenes, uses unnecessary force more than the necessary sort, uses bad language in the office.

But by midstream, it’s a standard American-style hyper-shootout with automatic weapons and fast cutting action sequences. Anonymous bad guys who apparently carry thousands of rounds of ammunition. Girlfriend gets fridged just to further motivate the tough old cop.

And by the end, it’s another silly shoot-out morphing into a standard-issue car chase, edited to look more exciting that it really is. Tack on a ridiculous “happy” ending where the tough old cop gets his gun and badge back despite having committed dozens of chargeable offenses, felonies and assaults. Because he Always Gets the Job Done, you see. Ray Winstone, we loved you in so, so many British gangster pictures. But, man, you’re too old for this kind of thing. You’re not Clint Eastwood.

Movies are entertainment...unless it's a documentary, then it can be educational, but could also be entertaining: see "Planet Earth" (sorry, I digress).

In my movies, I like to root for the good guy, sneer at the bad guy, and watch the good guy get the bad guy in the end. Not a complicated plot, I know, but this doesn't mean that I don't think characters should have depth and motivations. I think that those are core to a great movie. Sorry, I should rephrase, movies should have CLEAR motivations.

In this film, the motivations are so cluttered and seemingly misguided that I started to lose respect for everyone (good and bad). I really like Ray Winstone and Damian Lewis but I was constantly confused by their roles. I started questioning everyone's actions. This could have been a great crime movie but if you're looking for a good guy to just take down some bad guys "Man on Fire", or even "Safe" with Jason Statham, is a better choice. And for Prime users, Safe is FREE. That concludes the spoiler free part of the review.

***spoiler alert***

It's hard to root for the good guys when the good guys are crooked...and for seemingly NO REASON. At one point, one character seems to start to grow a conscience and then decides to forget it and go kill a bunch of people (albeit baddies) for his buddy. On top of that, it seems nobody minds. The general feeling I got from this movie is that it was made by a bunch of teenagers who thought, "Let's make a story about a squad of awesome and hardcore people. What makes someone awesome and hardcore?". After several Mountain Dew 2-liters, their answer was: "someone who does whatever they want and gets away with it because they are awesome and hardcore!!". Seems like circular logic to me and that's how this movie felt. Great heroes can be complicated and dark (see: Batman) but they are dark for a very good reason but they overcome their past issues and are ultimately logical and moral. These heroes were just thugs with a badge...

Sorry "The Sweeney", but you are the one who is "nicked" in this case.

Having watched the wonderful John Thaw and Dennis Waterman - we were a bit wary of getting this but curiosity got the better of us and we are glad we did - this film is electric. We have watched it several times and it seems to get better with every airing. The seller was excellent and I would use thier site again. Excellent all round

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Sweeneys....
Reviewed in Germany on August 27, 2013
