The recital opens with selections by Schubert, starting with “Viola,” followed with works by R. Strauss, including a rarely performed set of songs. The second half of the program comes from the early and late 20th century, with songs by English composer, conductor, and violist Frank Bridge, as well as Pulitzer Prize–winning American composer Dominick Argento.

At a Glance

Regula Mühlemann has chosen a program that mingles famous composers (Franz Schubert and Richard Strauss) with two composers (Dominick Argento and Frank Bridge) whose music should be much better known. In the case of Schubert, we are treated to two very rarely heard songs—“Viola” and “Die Gebüsche”—and Strauss is represented by his buried treasures, the four Mädchenblumen. Most of these songs require a pure high soprano to succeed—a task well-suited to Ms. Mühlemann’s vocal gifts.
