Summertime Lyrics

Summertime
The living's easy
Fish are jumping out
And the cotton, Lord
Cotton's high, Lord so high

And your daddy's rich
And your ma is so good-looking now
She's looking good now, baby
Hush, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby
No, no, no, no, don't you cry, don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're gonna rise, rise up singing
You're gonna spread your wings, child
And take, take to the sky
Lord, the sky

Until that morning
Honey, nothing's gonna harm you now
No, no, no no, no no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no no, no no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't you cry

Genius Annotation

Not to be confused with the 2020 release “Summertime The Gershwin Version,” “Summertime” is a cover of George Gershwin’s song of the same name. Unlike the 2020 release, Del Rey is more influenced by Big Brother and the Holding Company’s take on the track rather than a more folk direction she had taken in 2020. This cover specifically was intended to be on the earliest iteration of “Ultraviolence” which was entitled “Tropico” where it would’ve been the record’s cover song like how “The Other Woman” was for “Ultraviolence” and how “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” was for “Honeymoon.”

The track ultimately leaked on March 30th, 2023.
