In 1948, aspiring songwriter Tony works as a bar pianist; he meets aspiring star Lola, and is immediately smitten. At Manhattan's Copacabana lounge, they both start finding fame. However, fate steps in and she is swept to Havana to work in a splashy nightclub act where she is convinced she will find her stardom. Instead, she finds Rico, a suave gangster and the club owner.

Prior to watching this I have no idea about Barry Manilow’s life, all I know is he sang Copacabana. I also just found out that it was a movie so watched it.
While watching this movie, a thought that keeps running through my head was “There is no way Barry Manilow is straight” just by seeing his acting I knew something was up.
I was right after a few quick google search, and I’ve never been so happy to find out that one of my favorite song was sung by a gay guy.
Whether it’s a song or a movie, the story is such a masterpiece.

If you've listened to the song, you know how the story goes. I was genuinely surprised that this movie is actually quite cute and romantic for the first hour and a half, but then the last five minutes it all goes down the toilet. Hopefully the Copa Cabana bathrooms are clean...

My mum is a massive Bazza fan, she was in the fan club, both international and the UK one (until it closed down). She went to most of his concert dates when he played in the UK, the UK fan club get convention each year and she would sign all letters and cards to her Bazza friends with Manilove. Of course I despised him at the time, my mum dedicated so much of her life to him, she only played his music BUT I loved this film (having Estelle Getty in it possibly helped, what child didn't love the Golden Girls?) Good job I liked it as I had to watch it a lot as a child (along with films featuring Bette Midler - because of the Bazza connection). Thanks to my mum I'm lucky to also own a copy of it and still enjoy it, he ain't a bad actor and the whole thing is high camp fun.

I watched yet another tragic love story, but it's in the form of a pop song turned -"made for TV" movie. Honestly, it's one of the better "made for TV" movies I've seen in my lifetime, but its exactly what I expected.
It's campy and nostalgic, comparable to alot of 80's media set in the 40's and 50's. Fun to look at, but there's so much empty space in alot of scenes. Especially when Tony first serenades Lola, he's just there alone in a single shot for 3 minutes.
Also the biggest elephant in the room is how this film vaguely resembles the song. Tony is supposed to be a bartender, Lola was already a popular showgirl, and Rico was…
