WILLIAM S. PIERSON & CO. - CAPTAIN KIDD

            Est: €50 - €100

1846 NEW YORK. Share, unissued. black. #1000. In the early 19th century, a legend arose about a certain 17th century privateer, Captain Kidd, whose ship filled with treasures, would have sunk in the Hudson River. Abraham G. Thompson claimed to have a map, marking the location where Captain Kidd had sunk the vessel containing the loot. This salvage company was set up, named after William Seward Pierson, a successful Wall Street lawyer and one of the four founders, who would also look after the financing. However, the company was a complete scam as the privateer Kidd did his looting in the Indian Ocean and the money he made, was spent there. When the fraudulent scheme started to falter, the company was liquidated.
