10 November 1999: Triple H Marries Stephanie McMahon To End Her Relationship With Test
Test was actually the wrestler first in a romantic storyline with Stephanie McMahon. WWE added Stephanie’s character in 1999 and eventually placed her in a couple with Test to help them both have a bigger role on the show.
However, Triple H’s feud with Vince McMahon led to him getting involved. The wedding of Test and Stephanie was interrupted with Triple H showing footage of him marrying a drugged Stephanie beforehand. This was considered one of WWE’s wildest storylines, even for the bold Attitude Era time.
9 December 1999: Stephanie McMahon Turns Heel Revealing She Was In Cahoots With Triple H
Armageddon 1999 was the payoff to the bigger storyline involving Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Vince McMahon. A rare match for Vince saw him facing Triple H in a No Holds Barred match with Triple H agreeing to a divorce if he lost the match.
Triple H ended up winning, but the bigger reveal came when Stephanie embraced her husband. Fans were stunned to learn that Stephanie was part of this all along. Stephanie wanted revenge for Vince having her abducted by The Undertaker just to manipulate Steve Austin.
8 First Half Of 2000: The McMahon Helmsley Faction Forms & Vince McMahon Joins
Vince McMahon left WWE television for a few months after the relationship between Triple H and Stephanie McMahon started. The McMahon Helmsley Regime was the name used for the heel couple now running the show.
WWE perfectly booked them as villains to enhance feuds with The Rock and Mick Foley. Vince McMahon returned to swerve Rock and join up with his daughter again. Triple H and Stephanie became even more powerful as a couple with Vince stacking more odds in their favor.
7 Latter Half Of 2000: Stephanie McMahon Picking Triple H Over Kurt Angle In Love Triangle
Kurt Angle started to reach Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s tier as the most over heels in WWE in the second half of 2000. The newcomer Angle was less than a year into his debut when joining a major storyline of a love triangle with Stephanie and Triple H.
A close friendship between Kurt and Stephanie made Triple H upset, especially when Angle made out with her backstage. However, the story of Stephanie being split down the middle ended when she finally made her choice to help Triple H defeat Angle in a singles match.
6 January 2002: Triple H's Return As Face Starts Problems
WWE kept Triple H and Stephanie McMahon together without a breakup into Triple H’s torn quad injury. Stephanie remained a heel when Triple H returned as a heroic face that earned the admiration and respect of the audience for finishing his match injured.
The issues between the two started to form when Triple H just wanted to win matches and become the WWE Champion again. Stephanie’s drama became a negative to him and showed the cracks to have fans start clamoring for a breakup.
5 February 2002: Triple H Dumps Stephanie McMahon For Lying About Pregnancy
Triple H’s anger towards Stephanie McMahon’s actions started to end when she claimed she was pregnant with their child. This angle set up a vow renewal after Stephanie abused her influence over Triple H by doubling down into the annoying heel character.
However, Linda McMahon revealing to Triple H that Stephanie was lying led to a memorable breakup. Triple H told Stephanie he wanted a divorce at the vow renewal before hitting a Pedigree on Vince McMahon. The visual of Stephanie’s scowl ended the night and their kayfabe marriage in fitting fashion.
4 July 2006: Hinting At Their Relationship With DX Promos
WWE reuniting Triple H and Shawn Michaels for D-Generation X in 2006 led to them breaking the fourth wall on a few occasions. This was the first time WWE made any on-screen references to Triple H and Stephanie McMahon being together since their kayfabe split.
Triple H would make jokes in his promos when feuding with Vince about the person Stephanie was married to. There was even an episode where Triple H missed Raw due to Stephanie giving birth to their first child where they made a crack about Stephanie’s baby looking like him.
3 December 2007: Kissing Each Other At Raw 15th Anniversary To Embarrass Vince
WWE ran a 15th anniversary episode of Raw with a lot of familiar names showing up. However, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon decided to go back in time by showing the present when they took part in a kiss to further Vince McMahon’s anger at the end of a segment.
Vince was in the middle of his storyline realizing that Hornswoggle was his long lost son to upset the rest of the family finding out about his affair. WWE didn’t confirm that Triple H and Stephanie were together in real life, but it was a bit of a wink at the audience since most knew.
2 March 2009: Triple H Defends McMahon Family From Randy Orton
WWE fully referenced the relationship between Triple H and Stephanie McMahon as a real-life couple in 2009. Randy Orton punting Vince McMahon in the head started a storyline targeting the McMahon family. Stephanie being in harm’s way and Triple H’s other relatives being attacked utilized the reality.
Fans cheered when Triple H came out to make the save since it was unexpected as he was never referenced as part of the McMahon family before this. Orton winning the Royal Rumble match even set it up perfectly since Triple H was the WWE Champion that he’d face at WrestleMania 25.
1 August 2013: Running The Show Again As The Authority
Various moments would show Triple H and Stephanie McMahon together as a couple in their authority figure roles, but they didn’t fully run the show until mid-2013. The storyline of Triple H turning on Daniel Bryan and trying to keep him away from the WWE Championship started the new act.
Stephanie and Triple H called themselves The Authority to start new programs feuding with various face acts. Bryan, Brie Bella, Sting, Big Show and Roman Reigns were just some of the names to have issues with them. Triple H and Stephanie always excelled in the heel role using their relationship as part of the act.
