This is a unique film as it does not want to fit in anywhere. It is a tragic love story, a violent thriller, a fairytale and a very human exploration of life and love.
It all centres around one of the most intriguing characters I have ever seen, portrayed by the absolutely brilliant William H. Macy. His depiction of the unlucky Bernie and his gradual transformation is simply stunning. It has one of Alec Baldwin's best roles ever as well. An absolute joy to watch!
"The Cooler" takes away people's luck,
And in Vegas, Macy is stuck.
He'll play it mellow,
With Maria Bello,
Maybe there's love and luck for this shmuck.

I’m such an easy mark for anything old-school Vegas. And then you go and top it off with a melancholy fable of the ebbs and flows of Lady Luck? I’m hooked.
Especially when you’ve got Bill Macy starring as the ultimate gambler’s kryptonite, who’s life gets turned upside down by the too-good-to-be-true cocktail waitress, Maria Bello.
Then you mix in an Oscar nominated performance from Alec Baldwin and up the ante with Ron Livingston as his smarmy school-boy nemisis… Suddenly, I’m bigger sucker than that cash wielding drunkard at a the dime toss.
BONUS POINTS for all those lingering…
There's something eminently enthralling to me about Las Vegas. It's like an adversary in and of itself. I have no ambition to visit Sin City but I have loved some great films set there; Casino, Hard Eight, Leaving Las Vegas. I now count The Cooler among them.
A small vignette of every iconic casino on the Vegas strip sets the scene. The movie has a neo noir feel that I love. It's soundtracked by jazz and big band. It's smoky and seedy, with cheap motels. Alec Baldwin is a brutal bastard. I felt genuinely afraid of him, which feeds into why the movie worked so well for me....namely my connection to the unlikely couple of the piece, William H. Macy…
From what I've seen in the movies, Vegas looks like the ugliest city in the whole wide world. The good thing is, this film seems to agree. It creates this microcosm of Vegas lowlifes and tucks you in with its comfy melancholy blanket. Yet, it is not only William H. Macy's droopy face that was made for this film, early 2000s Alec Baldwin has just the perfect burnt-out aura to him as well.
Mario Bello comes across like a knockoff of Mulhalland Drive's Naomi Watts. This may sound like a jab at her, but it is spot-on for the role. Right around the 30 minute mark impending doom creeps up on the trio. I like that we see that Baldwin…

The execution of this interesting premise is sublime. Frank Hannah and Wayne Kramer's (Who also directs) script does a wonderful job of milking tension out of is this loser going to get his happy ending? It is a little slow, especially in the middle, but it is so compelling and thoughtfully written. Frank is a fantastic protagonist, a jaded loser who wants nothing more to just be able to live a normal life and maybe find happiness. The Cooler war aus meiner Sicht in allen seinen Aspekten recht mittelmäßig. Dabei gab es nichts, was mich großartig gestört hat noch irgendwie begeistern konnte. Am meisten konnte mich dabei Alec Baldwin, den ich eigentlich recht gerne sehe, ein paar schöne Shots der Kamera und der Score überzeugen. Der Rest, angefangen mit der Geschichte und seinen Charakteren, konnte mich nicht wirklich fesseln und war auch aus meiner Meinung nach nicht sonderlich interessant.
Deshalb ist The Cooler ein Film, den ich mir wohl nicht nochmal ansehen werde, weil er mich leider nicht wirklich überzeugen konnte.
I've always been a fan of this, and I hadn't watched it for a few years. Bernie is such a sympathetic character, you just want him to do okay, and William H Macy plays him great. I'm a fan of Maria Bello too, I absolutely fancied her from when I first saw it.
I like the smooth jazzy soundtrack too.

Nein, The Cooler erzählt im Schein seiner Location ein ruhiges Liebesdrama. Dabei birgt er keine sonderlichen Überraschungen und ist auch weitestgehend kein großer Wurf, dennoch wusste er mir zu gefallen. Aus einer guten Kamera, überzeugenden Schauspielleistungen, schönen Farben, interessantem Editing und schwingender Jazz-Begleitung kombiniert sich ein melancholischer Vibe. Keine außergewöhnliche Story innerhalb seines Genres, aber auch kein gewöhnliches Porträt seines Settings.

Ich muss gestehen: Seinen Pick ungesehen in die Filmclub-Löwengrube zu werfen, erweist sich als das reinste Glücksspiel. Nachdem nun schon reihenweise vernichtende Kritiken ins Haus geflattert sind, habe ich weiß Gott für einen schlechten Film erwartet. Und naja was soll ich sagen...mal ganz ehrlich....ohne hier Ergebniskosmetik betreiben zu wollen....mir hat er glücklicherweise gefallen!
Ist das verwunderlich? Eigentlich kaum, denn die Vegas-Kulisse mag zwar für viele overused sein, mich konnte sie aber einmal mehr in ihren Bann ziehen und wirkte wie eine leuchtende Glitzerwelt für diese charmante Märchenerzählung.
