My experience at Ben Davis High School may be similar to others. But, unique in my own way. I will say the best part about my days at the school, I only experienced racial inequality once. Now, with that being said it is vile that I experienced it. But, it affected me more positively than I would ever know. I had a Spanish teacher in my Sophomore year, it was a college class, so she spoke in Spanish all the time, but that wasn't the problem. It was what she said to me on the 2nd day of school. Me and a classmate I am close to this day, was reviewing each other's worksheets, just confirming answers. She comes over and tells my classmate to not help me and to let me 'sink'. I continued to go to my mom that day and get the class dropped the next day. After this, I learned that I could no longer qualify for an Academic Honors Diploma, so I switched tracks and decided to chase a Technical Honors Diploma and fell in love with my media class and the teacher I talk to every day!
People typically dislike this school because they see it's in a poor area of Indianapolis and it's an incredibly diverse school. They associate the low income and colorful nature of our students with negativity. In all reality, it's an incredible school with incredible opportunities. We have a career center that houses students from all over the state. I've had the opportunity to take so many quality AP and Honors classes. I am graduating salutatorian and it was a wild ride to get here, but I most definitely would not say I go to a bad school. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that I have had at Ben Davis and I am excited for any other students who have the academic and social opportunities that I had.
As a senior in High School, I think grades 10-12 have to be my favorite years, especially while attending Ben Davis High School. I've gone through the best experiences of making new friends, having reliable teachers/staff, having support after school hours, and overall, having many opportunities for the future. For example, an earlier pleasant experience was attending a college fair. I got the opportunity to listen to a helpful speech about paying for school and convey my career questions to people of that study. However, despite all the good experiences, the challenging part, on my end, would be trying to maintain motivation. All in all, I think Ben Davis High School goes on and beyond for students and lives up to its adequate reputation.
