NBC's hit medical drama New Amsterdam concluded its five-season run in 2023. The critically acclaimed TV show takes place in one of the oldest hospitals in the United States, where renegade doctor Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) begins changing the hearts and minds of the staff and patients by overhauling the medical protocols to offer better healthcare.

In addition to Eggold in the lead role, New Amsterdam boasts a versatile ensemble of characters and superb actors who portray them onscreen. Fans of the show are bound to recognize the main cast of New Amsterdam from a bevy of popular movies, and TV shows that span multiple genres.

Ryan Eggold as Max Goodwin

NBC

Ryan Eggold leads the way as Dr. Maximus "Max" Goodwin. Dr. Goodwin is the new medical director for the New Amsterdam Hospital in New York, one of the oldest medical establishments in the country.

When Max first arrives, he is shocked by the level of bureaucracy, inadequacy, and professional negligence and vows to clean up the day-to-day practices to ensure better care for his patients. Unafraid to take bold risks and do things his way, Max often gets in trouble with his superiors but doesn't mind if it equals better results.

After appearing in various TV shows to begin his career, Eggold scored his first big breakout by playing Ryan Matthews in The CW's 90210. Oddly enough, Eggold also spent the exact same amount of time playing Tom Keen in the crime series, The Blacklist, including 89 episodes over five seasons. Not limited to television, Eggold has played supporting roles in such movies as Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman and most recently, Tyler Perry's A Jazzman's Blues.

Janet Montgomery as Lauren Bloom

NBC

Janet Montgomery depicts Dr. Lauren Bloom in the medical drama available on Netflix. Dr. Bloom is the Head of the Emergency Department at New Amsterdam. Although she is committed to her job and believes in the direction Max is taking the hospital, Lauren has an Adderall addiction that lands her in rehab for three months. However, thanks to her co-workers Dr. Helen Sharpe and Dr. Iggy Frome, Lauren is able to find therapeutic solace and begin a healing path.

Although New Amsterdam ranks as Montgomery's longest-lasting TV character, fans are bound to recognize her from several other popular titles. For instance, Montgomery appeared in Entourage, Black Mirror, and This Is Us. However, her most notable role outside of Lauren Bloom has to be portraying Mary Sibley in the horror-fantasy series Salem, which she played for all 36 episodes across three seasons.

Jocko Sims as Floyd Reynolds

Jocko Sims plays the ever-likable Dr. Floyd Reynolds, Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at New Amsterdam. Calm under pressure and extremely cool outside of work, Dr. Reynolds is often stuck in his ways and has a hard time adjusting to Max's radical new methods. However, when he leaves for San Francisco in Season 2, his expertise is missed so badly that he is forced to return. Meanwhile, he attempts to ensure his mother is taken care of when she is diagnosed with diabetes.

Sims began his career in 2003 and has built an impressive movie and TV resume over the past 20 years. After starring in Jarhead, and Dreamgirls, Sims landed a recurring role in the TV adaptation of Crash. While New Amsterdam represents his most significant mainstream TV role, fans ought to check out Sim's terrific turn in the rewatchable sci-fi series, The Last Ship, in which he plays Lt Carlton Burk. Sims can be seen next in the upcoming TV series How to Die Alone.

Tyler Labine as Iggy Frome

Funnyman Tyler Labine lends immense pathos to New Amsterdam as Dr. Iggy Frome. Dr. Frome is the Head of the Psychiatry Department at New Amsterdam. As such, Dr. Frome treats in-patients as well as his own co-workers, which goes a long way in developing a sense of trust and camaraderie among the staff. Labine is best known for his comedic work, but in New Amsterdam, he's given the most dramatic storylines that deal with mental health and his own eating disorder.

With over 100 screen credits to his name, Labine is a versatile talent who can play every genre with convincing results. He famously starred in the cult-classic horror-comedy Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and can also be seen in Flyboys, Planet of the Apes, and Escape Room. However, to see the full breadth of his comedic and dramatic chops, fans should check out Labine playing the lead in Hulu's comedy-fantasy sitcom Deadbeat.

Freema Agyeman as Helen Sharpe

Freema Agyeman does a lot of the heavy lifting as Dr. Helen Sharpe. Dr. Sharpe is the Chair of Hematology and the Head of the Oncology Department and deals with sick cancer patients all day long. When Max arrives, Helen takes a more involved role in the hospital and the two become extremely close confidants. A romance even blossoms between the two which complicates their professional dynamic.

Agyeman is a British actor who notably starred in Doctor Who, before being cast in New Amsterdam. She played Martha Smith-Jones on the hit Sci-Fi TV show before going on to star in Law & Order: UK and The Carrie Diaries. Also a favorite of the Wachowski siblings, Ageyman can be seen in their Netflix TV show Sense8 as well as The Matrix Resurrections. In a much different performance, Agyeman's most recent credit includes starring opposite Lily Allen in the Sky Original comedy series Dreamland.

Casey is also very close to Dr. Bloom and risks his job to cover her Adderall dependency and even tampers with her paperwork and prescriptions to ensure such. Deep down, Casey is a good man who truly cares for his patients.

Considering his limited experience prior to New Amsterdam, Hernandez's long-term performance as Casey (64 episodes) is even more impressive. Before the show, the longest Hernandez spent on a TV show was seven episodes of the CBS crime drama Instinct. Since New Amsterdam, Hernandez has landed recurring roles in the Netflix drama Partner Track and the Prime Original horror-comedy series The Horror of Dolores Roach.

Anupam Kher as Vijay Kapoor

Anupam Kher adds tremendous warmth to the entertaining (if inaccurate) medical drama as Dr. Vjiay Kapoor. Dr. Kapoor is the Head of Neurology at New Amsterdam who also serves as a kind of father figure to the younger staffers. Dr. Kapoor is very close with Iggy and the two often trade humorous asides during their time together. Alas, Dr. Kapoor's health deteriorates when he contracts COVID-19, which informs his storyline in the show.

Kher is a ubiquitous actor with over 440 credits in his illustrious career. Most of those credits include Bollywood movies from India. However, he also starred alongside Montgomery in Sense8 and has since appeared in international TV shows like Trial by Fire and The Freelancer. To witness Kher's acting range on the big screen, see his standout roles in the hostage thriller Hotel Mumbai and the heartfelt romantic comedy The Big Sick.

Before joining the staff, Elizabeth worked abroad in Ghana with Doctors Without Borders.

Before New Amsterdam, Frank notably starred in the popular zombie TV series, Daybreak, and appeared in the musical comedy series Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. Frank has also made her presence felt on the big screen by starring in such movies as Multiverse and Soul to Keep. With no signs of slowing down, Frank will next star in the upcoming crime thriller The Silent Hour opposite Joel Kinnaman and Mark Strong.

Matthew Jeffers as Mark Walsh

Over time, Mark becomes promoted to Chief Resident Nurse who works closely with Dr. Reynolds. With seven total credits to his name thus far, New Amsterdam marks Jeffers' most substantial role. He can also be seen on the hit Prime original series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as Blacklist, and FBI. Jeffers' sole movie credit includes the off-beat Sci-Fi comedy Unidentified Objects, although he's slated to appear in the upcoming short film Conduit from the same director, Juan Felipe Zuleta.
