FAQs - booking United Kingdom flights

  • Where are the main airports in the United Kingdom?

The most well-known international airports in the UK are in London – Heathrow, Gatwick, London City Airport and Stansted Airport, as well as the perhaps lesser-known Luton Airport. The other major UK cities and those in other UK countries also have their own airports, so you can land in virtually any region. Glasgow and Edinburgh have two main Scottish airports, with Belfast the home of the main Northern Ireland one. Back in England you can land in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds or Newcastle, among others.

  • How can I reach Manchester city centre if I land at Manchester Airport (MAN)?

Passengers landing at Manchester Airport have plenty of convenient transport options to reach the city centre. You can take the Metrolink tram from the airport train station, which is connected to the Arrivals terminals by moving walkway systems. You will also find taxis located outside the terminals.

  • What major events are worth flying to the United Kingdom for?

The UK offers several annual festivals and events that are world-famous tourist attractions. Music lovers flock to the Glastonbury and Reading Festivals each year, and tennis fans have Wimbledon to look forward to. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is worth visiting in the Northern Hemisphere winter, and London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are something to behold.

  • Where should I fly to if I want to visit the Isle of Skye?

If you want to visit the Isle of Skye in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, you can fly to Inverness Airport (INV) and reach Skye by car, via the Skye bridge, in around 2h 30min. You can also fly to major Scottish Airports, such as Edinburgh (EDI) or Glasgow (GLA). From both these cities, you can drive to Skye in around 5h. Flying to larger airports, like GLA and EDI, may save you money and allow you to fly direct from other UK airports.

  • How much time should I budget to travel into London from its three main airports?

It’s pretty convenient getting to the centre of London from any of its airports. Heathrow is the closest, and the easiest way to travel to central London is to take the Heathrow Express, which will get you there in about 15min. From London Gatwick, you can catch a Southern Service train that leaves every 15min to London Victoria Station. If you’ve landed at Stansted Airport, the Stansted Express gets you to London in about 50min.

  • Do I need a visa for flights to the United Kingdom?

UK passengers on flights to the United Kingdom do not need to have a visa to travel within the UK. Although you do not need a passport for visiting other parts of the UK, including Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, most travellers take their passport to use as ID when checking in at the airport.

  • What are the closest airports to the UK’s coastal resorts?

Southampton Airport is well-placed for you to reach all the seaside resorts on the south coast of England, most notably the hugely popular Brighton and Hove area. The other desirable coastal region in the country is Blackpool, with Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport the closest. To reach the Cornwall coast you could land at Exeter or Bristol airports, but public transport from Heathrow will get you there quicker, making it the best option.

  • Which is the best airport for visiting the Lake District?

The Lake District is located in the north of England and is close to several major airports, including Manchester, Newcastle International Airport (NCL), and Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL). While all these airports are located around 1h 30min from the Lake District by car, you will find Manchester the most convenient if you are relying on public transport to reach rural areas.

  • Are direct flights available from London to other parts of the UK?

You can find a range of direct flights to the United Kingdom from London airports. British Airways offers direct flights between London Heathrow and Manchester. You can also fly direct from London Stansted (STN) to Edinburgh Airport with Ryanair and from London Luton (LTN) to Glasgow with EasyJet.

  • Can you fly direct between Northern Ireland and Wales?

Top tips for finding cheap flights to the United Kingdom

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest United Kingdom flight deals.
  • To be centrally located when you land in the United Kingdom, choose Manchester Airport as your destination – while London is the capital it’s located in the south of England.
  • London is the main travel hub for visiting southern England. From London, you can get to most southern cities, including Southampton (1h 25min), Bristol (1h 40min), and Birmingham (1h 20min), by train.
  • When flying in from the Southern Hemisphere on holiday, remember that the climate can be pretty inclement in winter, with the summer months being from around June to August.
  • Passengers who want to visit the north of Scotland, or travel to Orkney or Shetland, can fly to Aberdeen Airport (ABZ). Aberdeen has a range of direct flights from London available with EasyJet and British Airways. From Aberdeen, you will find transport links to northern areas, like Thurso and Wick, as well as ferries to the northern isles.
  • If you prefer to hire a car from or to the airport, all major airports in the UK host a selection of car hire company kiosks in their Arrivals halls. All UK international airports have advanced modern facilities for passengers with hidden disabilities and limited mobility, including personal assistance from the terminal entrance to your seat on the plane.
  • If you want to stay overnight at the terminal after flights to the United Kingdom, most London airports have convenient on-site hotels. For instance, if you land at London Heathrow (LHR), you can stay at the Hilton at T4 or the Sofitel at T5. Meanwhile, Gatwick (LGW) also has a Hilton Hotel located at its North Terminal.
  • When you want to fly to London, consider taking an indirect flight that travels via one of the other UK cities, as these can often be more cost-effective.
  • If you’re doing some exploring, save money on domestic flights in the UK by booking with the budget airlines like Wizz Air, easyJet and Ryanair.
  • The UK requires children under 12 to travel in car seats when you hire a car from the airport, which you can arrange as a bookable extra.

Everything! Not sure if there's really anything that could make it any better

Very quick trip from Southampton to Edinburgh Arrival a long way from baggage and up 3flights of stairs no lifts or escalators

Cons: "The flight was cancelled and we were asked to leave the departures lounge. There were no Logan Air ground staff actually working so we relied in the customer services desk at the airport to give us direction on what to do, and we were told that we would be eligible for compensation. I have now been told ( almost 2 months later) that the flight was only delayed and not cancelled so we are not getting a compensation payout to cover the huge additional cost I had to spend to fly another airline to get me to Aberdeen. Awful customer service, unreliable flights"

I fly to the USA every 6wks on Ave and 99% of the time I fly Aer Lingus. If I fly BA I’m always disappointed. My only criticism is the food. I’m vegan and over the last year it’s got slightly better these last couple of flights but on the whole it’s not good! Salad and fruit salad for breakfast and that’s also the starter and desert for the lunch/dinner and the main is usually rice with fried veg 😳the pasta is pretty good though. That’s been the last 2 meals…. Everything else is fantastic.

The flight was half full and I presume that the next few days are even less busy not sure why they are still charging a premium to change a flight.

Short flight so not much to rate. Surprised I had to pay for a soda.

Nice to be on a flight that wasn't fully booked so there were only two of us in the three seat row.

Very good need to offer better choice of food for business

There were a lot of empty rows. As a single passenger I should not have been seated with 2 others. The WiFi didn’t work. The Kosher meal was awful.

Aer Lingus interior is not the cleanest. I've seen crumbs on the seat and wrappers on the floor when I boarded

Flightl was good and on time. Only problem was the quality of the air in the cabin, didn’t appear to be clearing the air circulation.

Thankfully not a full flight so although my headphone jack wasn’t working 100% on my window seat, I was able to move to the aisle seat. Food was fine, nothing great but tasty enough. Crew were friendly and made enough rounds. Always have a decent experience with Aer Lingus

Always find Aer Lingus reliable and good value for money. Food on this flight was pretty basic and the headphone Jack at my seat only worked for one ear. Little disappointed in movie selection, limited on recent releases. Staff are okay - but I always buy a cheap ticket so not like I expect first class opulence anyway!!!

The flight was delayed for over 1 hour. The boarding process is appalling making you wait for 30 minutes in the passage leading to the outside door without any seats.

The on board air steward really made the journey. He was very entertaining

I was disappointed there was a 40 minute delay to flight

Well Is extra charge for everything and other companies include that and the price.

The trip itself was good. I have given only good as rating, because my first flight has been cancelled by a different airline and that caused disruption in my trip. I spent over ten hours in Luton airport and that caused me high tiredness, sickness, because of the very early initial trip. easyJet staff has been professional and friendly.

Not great! Rude staff in London and the worse baggage reclaim I’ve ever seen. Great staff in flight but doubt I’ll fly with them again

You booked my 7 year old son to sit on his own without his mum and dad in s separate row between two unfriendly adult strangers. The plane was disgusting and dirty, aisles and everywhere sticky. The lounge waiting area was filthy carpet and had insufficient seats so we had to sit on it to wait for 35 minutes and my 7 year old sone played on this filthy lounge carpet. The outside of the plane appeared clean. The pilot was helpful with the route and what to expect weather etc.

Comfort isn’t a word one uses on economy airlines! Boarding was okay, delayed but okay, the flight was good, quick and time was made up.

The seat leg room seemed much tighter on the way home My cheese toasty wasn’t that hot - didn’t realise till half eaten

With stairs on a rainy tarmac, EasyJet flights are ok for younger travelers with backpack only. Seniors with mobility issues find it challenging 😰. However, the crew and disability assistance folks at both ends eased that discomfort as much as possible for their various roles. Kudos to airport and EasyJet employees for their kind service.

Cardiff is a great airport but they pen you in at a gate way too small for passenger numbers. Called to the gate too soon and air conditioning was not in operation despite the heat. Cardiff should do better as a small relatively quiet regional airport.

Good, everything went straight forward and on time, I am satisfied

Perfect timing, perfect departure, lovely crew on the ground and in the air.

Good flight. Take off a little late but make up the time

Everything’s went straight forward, no issues, good service and friendly crew

Left on time and arrived on time both ways, thank you

The flight was 45 mins delayed but the crew provided water and necessities like tissues

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

We each paid for 10kg checked in luggage. Flying out there were no issues sharing one case (20kg). Not so coming back. Additional £48 charge and unable to provide an explanation of why it was ok on one journey but not the other, or indeed what material difference it makes between 2x10kg cases vs 1x20kg case. Scam, and appalling from Ryanair.

Easy process and good flight experience The food good be better

Very bed boarding, there was overbooked and make a lot of problems and noises

On my way from Chicago to London, I was seated next to a quite heavy passenger. I could barely move. BA should have ensured that overweight customers are placed in comfortable seats and not to penalize also other passengers because BA is not willing to accommodate these passengers and their needs. No respect at all.

I truly don't think there was anything that could have been better. How is that for an endorsement?! I'm a firm fan of BA now, with two flights in the past 2 months. Keep up the great work! And thank you!

New airport for me. A little confusing.bunable to use kiosk for boarding pass. Agent checking us in was professional but not very friendly.

Taking off and landing were smooth. I didn't have anything to complain about.

The flight as far as timings go was excellent. Unfortunately we ended up sat with someone on a night flight who had been drinking alcohol before boarding and BA staff were happily serving him more alcohol. He was very drunk which made our flight uncomfortable and awkward. My partner had this person lying on him whilst asleep. Alcohol should be served minimally. If there had been an emergency this person would not have been in a fit state to act accordingly.

The sad case is that BA is often late. I missed my connection outbound and then was rebooked in another biz class seat some 10 hours later. I opted to change to economy (no compensation refunded of course) that was only 5 hours later. On the return journey, once again changing planes was very challenging. This time we landed only a little bit late, but deplaning took a long time so the connection was very much in doubt. Some serious running and sweat later, I managed to make the connection but my luggage did not. No messages about the missing luggage, so I had to wait until the entire bag return process was over before seeking out an agent. There was only one and well over 50 passengers waiting to speaking with her. She was quite pleasant, but it took 1 hour and 45 minutes from touchdown to leaving the airport.

First time flying with BA and I will do it again. Staff at airport and on board were very nice and helpful

BA charged me 70 euros for one bag on my return after having recognized my frequent flier status and charging me nothing for the same bag on the outbound. Their employees are not well trained and rules are inconsistently applied.

I couldn’t select my seat until I checked in at the airport. Extremely difficult to talk to a customer service representative. Also, the gate announcement doesn’t appear until less than an hour before boarding.
