Dead Or Alive – Nude

Back when this album came out, I was at Cut Corner Records in Lexington, KY, looking at the import 12 of "Everything Counts (Live)", and trying to decide if I really needed it (turns out I did). While there I met a blond guy who claimed to have sent Pete Burns the shirt he's wearing on the inner sleeve. He told me Pete sent the shirt back after the shoot. It's possible he was full of shite but a fun story anyway.

Beautiful, high-gloss sleeve with artwork even better than the original pressing with deeper, richer tones. Sound quality of the vinyl is pristine. Colour of the vinyl varies drastically -from bright pink to a more purplish tone to match the tones of the roses on the sleeve. A gorgeous MOV release all the way around.

The only advantage here over the original UK vinyl release is that it's on new 180g vinyl so it's quiet.
The actual sound is otherwise identical as this is a reissue, not a remaster.
The cover is cheap glossy photocopy or print out, it looks nasty compared to the commercial print quality of the original cover.
Instead of the original insert sleeve you get a pathetic looking single sheet insert which looks like the cheapest option.
After seeing the cheap and nasty cover I bought copies of the original UK vinyls!

What’s Pebbles got to do with DOA ?... really a pirate release

MOV are very hit and miss, but this one is a winner. Faithful artwork and nice sound.

I loved this album when it came out and (at 14 mind you) couldn't figure out why it didn't go straight to number 1 on the charts. I got the internationaly released version but was always curious about the extra tracks the Japanese release had. Unfortunately it was always just to expensive for me to buy until I came across seller 'Pravda341' who had a mint condition and still in factory seal. So 27 years after it was released I finally got my affordable and most desired version of the album and it's still great. Come Home With Me Baby should have been a #1 single; it's just one of the best dance music tracks ever & proof Pete didn't need the band to make great music, it was and is their best album by far and one of the first albums I ever heard in "continuous mix". I was very happy with the price (€11) and the communication and service of the seller (Pravda341); I'd buy from him again. The cd arrived very quickly even though it was sent from Russia. Great album, great seller = very happy customer. The music is just brilliant, no filler like on previous albums. The only disappointment is that the song 'Love Toy' is just 2 minutes long, it should have been included in full (I've since heard the full version on YouTube and its a pretty decent track). If you're a Pete or DOA fan, this album is as good as it gets 😆.

I recently talked about what Single Versions (or what versions are on the album), of youthquake & mad, bad & dangerous to know. Thought I would do this one next. So nude was the 4th album by dead or alive. It was the end of them working with SAW & Pete & Steve were the only 2 still in the band. So both of them worked on it alone together & Pete said in an interview that he thought it was his best work. However in a newer interview he said he wanted another hit (Come home), so he could leave & not show his face again. Technically it's really a Pete burns album with Steve working on instrumentals, but I think the label thought it Would sell better under the band name, plus they were signed under that name. Here's the info about what versions are on this
Turn around & count 2 ten - it used the 12" version that was used in the video, but it had a vocal intro & was slightly shorter. This album continued into each track so the ending goes into the next song
Baby Don't Say Goodbye - the album version uses a different intro, but it's pretty much close to the extended mix. Every mix was pretty much the same it just used a different intro & some extended instrumental parts or edited down parts.
Come Home With Me Baby - This was rerecorded & remixed for its single release. Like they always did, at least one or 2 songs off the album would be remixed a lot or slightly & at least one would be rerecorded. I'm pretty sure it only used a few new vocals, but the instrumental was completely different. This is the only song on the album that isn't close to the single version, besides the vocals because only some are different on the Single Mix.
Now there is a bonus track Version of this album. It had baby don't say goodbye (alternative mix) which was pretty much the radio edit. Give It Back That Love is mine instrumental. I'm not sure why it was put on as a bonus track but I personally love the instrumental. Then love you instrumental. This is probably the only reason to by the bonus track version besides the album artwork. It had the unreleased song from the album, but sadly it was like a 2 minute instrumental. The boxset just released has the full Version of love Toy. The instrumental on this has a slightly different intro & maybe was an early instrumental mix. Also Japan's artwork for each version is different. It has Pete in a blue / grey background with chains & hes wearing chains in the photos on the cover. I think the cover is better then the flower one, but the flower one probably goes better with the theme. I'm sure the record company said no to the chained cover, but they allowed it for Japan.

While Youthquake put Dead or Alive firmly on the pop/dance map, for me it was always Nude that captured my heart. Here is Dead or Alive in all their glory (pun intended), unabashedly dramatic, romantic, rolling around on a bed of roses and crying their eyes out over lost love. Pete Burns chews up every lyric, and why the emotional timbre of the album hovers somewhere around a 14 year old girl's, there's no denying this is one of the silliest and most fun pop albums of the late 80's.

Replacing Stock/Aitken/Waterman's production with their own poses less of a problem than you might think here, and Burns and company show they are no slouches putting together an album, and have their own arsenal of cracking, thumping, widescreen pop production tricks up their sleeves. "Come Home With Me Baby", "Turn Around and Count 2 Ten", and "Baby Don't Say Goodbye" anchor the album with singles strong enough to match anything on Youthquake or Mad,Bad, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a song on the album that isn't a rollicking, raucous good time (only "I Don't Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" lags a bit).

Dead or Alive may have always been more about sex and a glamorous pout than anything resembling thoughtful gravitas, but on this album, they found what they were good at, and they did it better than almost anyone else.

Close your doors, put on your headphones, and give it a listen.
