Carved in 1937 - inaugurated in 1938 - still standing the test of time (has been refurbished a few times since) the Gate of the Kiss is another iconic masterpiece of Constantin Brancusi - part of the Heroes Avenue Ensemble commemorating the heroes of WWI.
This work consists of 2 pillar that on the 4 side of each have the symbol of the kiss - the 2 circles split in the middle but joined.
Also the transversal piece resting on the 2 pillar have engraved on it in many spots the same symbol - and also fine details that make it resemble to the shingle roofing.
Otherwise the meaning lies in the eye of the beholder and the artist did not make it easy on the beholder to discern the meaning of this work (kissing of your lover on departure? kissing your life goodbye when you march in your final battle? - given that it is dedicated to the fallen heroes of WWI - , soldiers receiving the "kiss of death" as they fall ??? - it is up to you to find meaning in the artistic expression).
Nonetheless regardless of what you see it is a true masterpiece - on public display - work of the genius of Constantin Brancusi.

Târgu Jiu is rather an awful town, full of communist apartment blocks, industrial wrecks from Ceausescu's era and kitschy buildings from the 90s, until you reach this park and see, through the chestnut leaves, the Gate of the Kiss, in all its splendor and simplicity. A few egrets were resting on the branches of a tree near the Table of Silence, while the sun was setting on the other side of the Jiu River.
A lovely experience!

Arguably one of Brancusi's most poignant sculptures, this piece was commissioned in 1935 to serve as a memorial to soldiers who defended Târgu Jiu against attack from the Central Powers.
Brancusi refused any payment for this work, and although he resided in Paris at the time, he was willing to travel to his native country and create this work on an unprecedented scale, for an outdoor space. The Gate of the Kiss is part of an ensemble of three sculptures, the others being The Endless Column and The Table of Silence. The commemorative sculptures are orientated from west to east, resembling the direction of sunset through to dawn. Perhaps falling in battle is the evening, whilst waking to eternal life is morning. The kiss gateway is made from Travertine, a neutral coloured marble with a mineral limestone basis.

This sculpture is remarkable not least because of its survival of the Romanian Revolution of 1989 and the fall of the Communist regime. It is a proud testimony to one country's commitment to remembering what will always matter in human terms, irrespective of political priorities. As with so many of Brancusi's sculptures, The Gate of the Kiss is highly ambiguous in its meaning, and much depends on the viewer's personal interpretation. Whatever your view of the kiss itself, an archway, with a destination on either side, is invariably a passage. Given its location, this is almost certainly a transition from one state to another, from death to life, or life to death, depending on your religious perspective.

Love is of course an aspect of life. When soldiers departed for war, they kissed their loved ones farewell. It could be that on the eves of their sacrifice, there was this parting kiss. The motifs on the gateway, with a divided circle on either side and the groove that represents this division extending all the way down to the base of the arch, could be many things. Some see in the two halves a mouth divided by lips. Others see eyes peering at the inside of the gateway, whilst others still are reminded of how the mouths of two people can join. This would be the most literal, given the sculpture's title. In life, there are opening kisses and there are closing kisses. This archway could be both. To walk through an archway is to move one's foot from one side of a stile to another, thus the archway is transition. It has about it an impressive presence; nobody can walk through the gate without being deeply affected.

Part of the suite of sculptures that mean a visitor must come to what is otherwise an ordinary Romanian town. The kiss motif was repeated by Brancusi several times, but this is amongst the simplest and most affecting. It forms the gate to the avenue of seats with the table of silence in the distance. Made of travertine, one hopes it will last for centuries as it must be vunerable to acid pollution in the rain.

The Gate of the Kiss is one the 3 great pieces of the monumental art of Bracusi which are in Targu Jiu. Maybe you never was kissed under this gate, but for sure you will remember all your life that one day you stood here. Many things about this great piece of art you can read for sure on net. If you come in Targu Jiu you can not miss to see it!

Der Weg hierher lohnt sich nur, wenn man solche Betonkunst mag. Die Stadt selbst ist eine einzige Baustelle.

There is a deep symbolism in the limestone monuments, during a route of 1,753 meters, which starts from the Table of Silence and reaches, crossing the city, to the Endless Gratitude Column to the Heroes of the Nation. It’s a homage to the soldiers who fell in the First World War.

Regarding the Table of Silence, there is a Christian dimension of the mass, a table of communion and confession, of peace and silence, a philosophical table, those 12 seats that can be the 12 apostles.
Then, on the route there are 30 chairs, in the shape of an hourglass, represent the passage of time.

The route passes through the Kiss Gate, which has a special significance, being interpreted as the Gate of Heaven, as a triumphal arch of the soldiers' victory. It is like a gateway to the Great Passage. There are the two benches and they can symbolize the wait before the Last Judgment.

The Kiss Gate has an architrave that is like a dowry box, therefore being a wedding gate. Speaking of heroes, of young men who had fallen in the war, some of them unable to kiss a girl, they went to marry Death. The dowry box on the two pillars of the gate is also relevant from this perspective.

The route leads to the Infinite Column and passes through the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

There is a route of the burial ritual, when young soldiers say goodbye to life in a last meditative state, walking their way to the Kiss Gate. As the funeral procession has stops, they are marked by those 30 seats, in five groups each. Into the church, there is the last ritual that the priest performs and we reach the Column, like a Staircase of Jacob, of the ascension of souls to Heaven.

The traditional funerary pillar is present in this meaning of the Infinite Column, as a row of rhombohedrons. Each rhombohedron is 1.80 meters in size, which means it is a human state, therefore there is an infinite number of people to Heaven. Infinite Column is a pillar, a funeral tree.

We tried to peacefully visit the park where the most iconic sculptures of Brâncuși are displayed. Unfortunately we could not find a parking place in the area in a decent amount of time and we had to leave.
Still, just slowly passing by this impressive piece of art gives you a feeling of the sculptor's greatness and powerful ability to extract the beauty from the simplest lines.
I believe all Brâncuși's art needs to be enjoyed in tranquility.
