Need very basic itinerary advice

Need some basic help in planning a 12 night family vacation to Japan in early August. We are two adults in 60s and two young adult sons. We are flying from LAX to Tokyo and would like to return home from Kagoshima. Need some basic advice with these preferences:

1. Not too many days in Tokyo, just the basic sites as we don’t love big modern cities and prefer more historic sites, etc. Thinking 3 nights? Ideas for hotels close to public transport helpful

2. Want to see Kyoto, day trip to Naga

3. Osaka optional

4. Would like to see Niroshima

5. End up in Kagoshima, as my stepdad lived there for years and it sounds like somewhere we would like.

6. No driving

7. Mt Fuji not a priority

8. Often use day tour companies like Viator to take city tours.

We like outdoors, nature sites, some temples, maybe a neat shopping area at least once for sons.

Can anyone please give some input? We’d like to see the main sites, it also understand that our trip is pretty short and lots will go unseen. Thanks I. Advance

Here's the basic website for everything about Japan. . https://www.japan-guide.com

2. The name of the city is Nara.

4. Are you thinking Hiroshima?

August is hot and muggy. Stay hydrated.

Chances are you will need to transfer at either Narita or Haneda to get your international flight to the US.

Oh I thought "Niroshima" means Naoshima.

Just to add on..

Kagoshima is a beautiful place with lots of nature. It was quite amazing to see Sakurajima - active volcano. Nice to hike in Yakushima as well.

The only thing about August is that it is the typhoon season..

Would recommend having some backup plan for bad weather. In Kyoto, we did a wagashi (japanese sweets making) class, and also a tatami experience workshop - near Kitanotenmangu shrine - lovely big shrine.

The nearest international airport from Kagoshima is Fukuoka, but no direct flights to LAX, best to fly to Tokyo and take a direct flight..

Apart from potential typhoon passing-by or making landfalls, beware of Obon holidays in mid-Aug when many many locals travel.

Kagoshima airport has an international terminal with flights serving to several Asian countries/locations.
