The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Number-one New York Times best seller

A memoir of leadership and success: The executive chairman of Disney, Time’s 2019 businessperson of the year, shares the ideas and values he embraced during his 15 years as CEO while reinventing one of the world’s most beloved companies and inspiring the people who bring the magic to life.

Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR

Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger - think global - and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets.

Fourteen years later, Disney is the largest, most admired media company in the world, counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox among its properties. Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over, and he is recognized as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our era.

In The Ride of a Lifetime, Robert Iger shares the lessons he learned while running Disney and leading its 220,000-plus employees, and he explores the principles that are necessary for true leadership, including:

  • Optimism. Even in the face of difficulty, an optimistic leader will find the path toward the best possible outcome and focus on that, rather than give in to pessimism and blaming.
  • Courage. Leaders have to be willing to take risks and place big bets. Fear of failure destroys creativity.
  • Decisiveness. All decisions, no matter how difficult, can be made on a timely basis. Indecisiveness is both wasteful and destructive to morale.
  • Fairness. Treat people decently, with empathy, and be accessible to them.

This audiobook is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger for 45 years, since the day he started as the lowliest studio grunt at ABC. It’s also about thoughtfulness and respect, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the Star Wars mythology.

"The ideas in this book strike me as universal", Iger writes. "Not just to the aspiring CEOs of the world, but to anyone wanting to feel less fearful, more confidently themselves, as they navigate their professional and even personal lives."

I delayed purchasing this book because we were actually going on a trip to Walt Disney World. So, in 2022 it was my selection for my Christmas present. Read it in a short time. Found Bob Iger's story very interesting, and often we have no idea what people go through for their careers. If I knew I could get a message to him, I would personally thank him for the insight into orchestrating the development of the Art of Animation resort where we stayed in 2020 just before the whole world shut down due to the pandemic. When I read about this in his book, I started crying because our family got to experience the feeling of being in the "Cars" movies. I felt we got a great value in the accommodations. It made it easy for the five of us to get ready to go to the parks with two full bathrooms without having to rent two adjoining rooms which we had done on a previous trip. The additional kitchenette space was very welcome to this trip as well. So with that said, I'm grateful for that option and the foresight Mr. Iger had for bringing it to fruition with the many Disney folks. If you are a Disney fan, then I'd recommend this book for a little peek behind the scenes of such an influential person.

I purchased this book primarily because I am a huge Disney fan and I think Bob Iger has done a fantastic job during his tenure transforming the company and adding tremendous Intellectual Property. This book does not disappoint and I found myself flying through the pages. I would say the title doesn't even do this book justice as there were lessons from his entire career, not just his 15 year tenure as the CEO of Walt Disney. Not only is Mr. Iger a business Icon and exceptional leader, but he is also a tremendous individual and human being. My only question after reading this book is who is next to take on the leadership role at Disney?

This book is awesome and has been written beautifully. I couldn’t put it down. The book contains many leadership, personality and finance lessons which are insightful. The ride and changes that Disney had throughout the years is inspiring. If your a fan of Steve Jobs there’s also a chapter or two about Bob’s relationship with Steve.

I enjoyed this read as my family are Disney fans and this book gives a glimpse into some of, if not, the biggest deals Disney has made. While I had read about the Pixar, Marvel and Fox acquisitions when they occurred, this book provides an inside look from the CEOs perspective on the successes and challenges with each. I really liked the relationship aspect that Iger brings to the memoir, especially that with Steve Jobs. There definitely were Leadership lessons/components in the book as well so I also found it valuable from that perspective.

This is not an autobiography! I actually hate those books. This is written almost as a business leadership book. There are lots of great stories about success and failures, good leadership and bad. And as a Disney fan myself, it’s really cool to tie these stories back to the Disney Company. It can also be enjoyed as a modern history of the company as well. The insider perspective really shines some perspective into decisions made back then. Overall, it’s a pretty easy read and it’s hard to put down. I really enjoyed this read!

I'm an avid reader of business-related books and I really enjoyed Ride of a Lifetime. Bob Iger gives some great insights into the leadership lessons that he learnt in his career, cumulating in being CEO of Disney from 2005.

This is an easy to read book that's packed full of wisdom, including a fantastic chapter at the end summarising "Lessons to Lead By".
