"Early Spirit albums are a seamless mix of blues, jazz and folk glossed with a thick layer of psychedelic '60s rock, mirroring the diverse backgrounds of each of the original group members. Drummer Ed Cassidy and keyboardist John Locke were in a jazz group together, Jay Ferguson was trained in classical music, bassist Mark Andes and guitarist Randy California came from a blues footing, the latter playing gigs with some guy named Jimi Hendrix as part of Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. Jimi Hendrix even bestowed the name 'California' on his 16-year-old bandmate. The original Spirit line-up released four consistently great albums, culminating in the 1970s landmark LP, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. But the lack of commercial success broke up this version of Spirit, with Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes forming Jo Jo Gunne, and Randy California leaving to form Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds with Jimi Hendrix bass player, Noel Redding (performing under the name Clit McTorius). Randy California returned in 1975 to become the creative force of Spirit, releasing albums and touring under the Spirit name until his tragic drowning in 1997."
