Better Than I Expected
larrys316 May 2017
I didn't know what to expect from this film with no reviews posted as I write this. What I found was a thriller that contained wild twists and turns as it progressed, but which also contained, at times, such highly implausible plot elements that I found myself shaking my head in disbelief.

Eion Bailey stars here as Dr. Kevin Riley, who is about to embark on a much anticipated Caribbean vacation with his wife Jules (Bethany Joy Lenz) and their six-year-old son Andy (Mauricio E. Alemany). Upon arrival, they rent a boat from a local, but, at the urging of Andy, end up exploring a deserted island far out at sea. However, with their outboard motor failing and with no food or water, they will find themselves in a most precarious and dangerous predicament.

From there, a series of wild and life threatening events will begin, and without writing too many spoilers I will say that a local fisherman named Miguel sees a golden opportunity for extortion here. Barkhad Abdi, who was nominated for and won numerous awards for his motion picture debut in "Captain Phillips" again turns in an amazing and most believable performance as Miguel.

Overall, this movie, written and directed by Phil Volken, was better than I anticipated and certainly kept my attention throughout, but be prepared for some extremely implausible plot elements along the way.

I do not make in one year what you spend in ten days

A B movie? I wish the so called "A" action-packed movies had the suspense and the quality of the screenplay of "extortion ".

It takes a little time to grow on you (and you say to yourself :"another flick with a nice family in jeopardy", but as soon as the "rescuers" appear, the movie is on fire ,and there's no letup as it continues to build in intensity as unexpected sudden new developments keep the viewer glued to his chair ; the screenplay is so gripping that it makes us forget the numerous implausibilities (a doctor who takes his family to a sea trip without bottles of water?); it was the second time I had watched this (longer than the usual movie of this kind the running time of which generally rarely exceeding 90 min) excellent thriller and I was captivated again all along Eian Bailey's trials .Add one of the most terrifying villains of the decade (straight-faced Barkhad Abdi ) whose motives make sense .

Take a Deep Breath

More realistic than most shootem up movies, especially if you have ever known family love or responsibility. After the first half hour it was constant fear or action all the way until the end.

Taunt, original, brilliantly timed, edge of seat thriller
robertemerald6 June 2019
The filmmakers here know their job. This is a taunt thriller, with a lean and exquisite timeline. There is no excess. This is truly knife-edge viewing from the 20 minute mark to the very end. It's a very unusual story, in an unusual location. I honestly don't believe I've seen anything quite like it before. The premise is basically that a father's brain goes into overdrive to find the means to save his family. It doesn't seem forced or farfetched, indeed, it all seems reward for effort. The writers throw brilliant spanners into the works as shock surprises, it's a treat. The ending had real class. I loved some of the ideas for the edits, this is a creative work as well, such as clever shots of parts of a fishing vessel before zooming to an open wallet to awaken the story, or a close-up of a lonely seedling as an ominous symbol. Some of the background music would easily have suited a bigger production as well, even if a tad old-fashioned. The strings as the family land in their resort were particularly inspiring. I have a couple of tiny pickles. The cameras used were OK, but I've seen better for colour, and for a Caribbean movie full of vivid blues that should have been a priority. And honestly, what father with zero knowledge of engines takes a motorboat out to a distance that he can no longer see the shore, with no flares, phones, or water, and hasn't even bothered to let the resort know what he's up to? OK, it's just plausible in the rush of bliss that accompanies pleasing his very young boy. If I may comment generally though, inattention to plot believability in many movies and TV these days is seeming to be a vogue. Is it deliberate? Do people like hating the stupidity of persons or actions? Perhaps I missed hearing about some new and surprising market research, who knows? This one is easily forgivable. The villain is more than believable, well played and cast, as is the patient Danny Glover. The lead is a triumph, as is the overall direction. Extortion is a top class thriller.

far from a B movie
zeller-525 June 2017
I read a few of the reviews who hated the movie. "how did this make it to Netflix?" - I can tell you how :)

It is entertaining. I read people complaining about how unrealistic the movies are. But those are the same kinds of people who love the Transformers series :) Not saying the movie is unrealistic, but let's face it. It's a movie, not a documentary.

There are a few plot holes, I give you that. But as a software engineer I just roll my eyes when someone 'hacks into a system' (again) in some movie for the sake of storytelling.

I do not need every single detail of the movie to be well researched. Which is why it is a movie.

So much about the disclaimer :) The movie itself is good. Main characters do a great job, it takes you around a few turns in the Caribbean - and the overall message of the movie is great. Family matters more than money.

I rate it 7/10 because of the things that other people actually hated the movie for. I liked it, I just consider those gaps in research 'flaws', not total failures :)

It is definitely worth watching. It is well cast and entertainingly written and filmed. It's far from a B-movie or a low-budget production.

Whoever calls this low-budget doesn't know the first thing about production value.

Could and should have been better.
deloudelouvain24 February 2018
The only conclusion I have after watching Extortion is that it could have been much better. The movie is entertaining, there is no doubt about that, but there are too many plot holes in the story. Many times I was thinking "How the hell could he knew that?, That's not possible, Yeah right, and so on". And that's never good in a well balanced story. The acting wasn't bad though, but it could have been better sometimes. The ending wasn't great either, I thought they were just tired of writing a good ending for a movie that could have been much better if they put a bit more effort into it. But to watch once it's okay if you just want some entertaining and you are not to fuzzy about the perfection in a story.

Criminally Overlooked
koltonbrett12 July 2022
This underrated thriller had flown under my radar for too long. I was not expecting to be as captivated as I was. What I thought would be a simple little B-movie pleasantly surprised me with a powerful story and overall professional quality film with a big-budget feel. What lengths would a father go to in order to save his family? This story showcases such a heart-wrenching effort. This film is poorly named in my opinion. It lead me to believe that the extortion element would be the main plot point, but the story is much more about a desperate father trying to locate and save his family before it's too late. This gives us an emotional and suspenseful journey to go on. It's like the film "Taken," but the father is just an ordinary guy rather than someone with a special set of skills like Liam Neeson's character in that film. The simple realism of the unfortunate turn of events is chilling.

The soundtrack is surprisingly beautiful and occasionally epic. It conveys the sadness and desperation of the situation. You can tell ion Bailey put his heart into this role. He's a superb leading man that quickly wins us over. His character is relatable and convincing at every turn. This is a thriller that hooked me and didn't let me go. I needed to know what ended up happening with this sweet family. I needed them to be okay. While it might be difficult to do at times, given the tension this movie creates, don't forget to take in and enjoy the beautiful Caribbean scenery. This movie more than just entertained me, it moved me.

Entertaining thriller starring Paul Rudd lookalike
McQueen19804 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ok the movie stretches credibility once he gets back on land and starts dealing with the cops lead by Danny Glover but you cannot deny its entertainment value. I honestly never heard of eion bailey before this movie but he does a good job of taking us frantically from one scene to the next and I liked the Caribbean locations to the point that it maybe deserved a theatrical release. The ending on the speedboat was thrilling with a bittersweet final shot of the family on the island leaving it slightly open ended.

Good film. Well worth watching.
shaneakk29 January 2019
This is a good film. The guy is a Heart specialist not a boat mechanic yet everyone complains about his inability to fix a boat engine or lawn mower. How are the two related. I can fix an engine so should I be able to mend a human heart 🤣.Priceless medical hands rarely risk injury. Everyone has opinions and think that they know best and that is the norm. Detectives assuming that he killed his family for the insurance etc etc. In real life there are people just that stupid. So it really is not far fetched at all. Watch it and make your own mind up.

I have changed my opinion as I have recently watched quite a few 2 star films that have been edge-of-your seat stuff and some deadly boring 5 star movies. I no longer give star ratings any credit. Especially as people are now "credited" for highly rating certain movies/games/albums etc.

Nothing new, but good work
bastiaan074019 May 2017
I caught myself being engaged from the start, things unfold just about how you'd expect in this type of movie although you don't know exactly, we've seen it all before, but it is done alright. Engaged, never bored, but never mindblown. The fugitive 'light' in the Caribbean, not much else to say. Polished feel. Well-deserved 7/10.

a man will do anything for his family
phanthinga8 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The scenario"A fun trip go horribly wrong" had been done countless time before and is one of my favorite movie sub genre but if only it well directed and this movie Extortion (2017) hit all the right note in my book. The movie told a story about a family man will do anything to get back his family when he get caught up in a deadly situation involving a local fish man.The thing i like the most about this movie is although the bad and good guy line is pretty clear from the beginning but the more the movie go the more you will feel sympathy for the bad guy brilliant played by Barkhad Abdi a very underrated actor you may recognize from Captain Phillips. The main character played by Eion Bailey also very good in this movie when it come to emotional scene and showing the die hard will of a man.I'm also very please when seeing Danny Glover in this movie despite being a supporting character. The thing turned me off the most is i freaking hate what they did with Barkhad Abdi character when they kill him off during the movie climax.

Highly entertaining thriller guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat
kewl_wateva17 May 2017
This is the first time i am ever writing a movie a review on IMDb. So bear with me if my English is not good. But this movie deserves one. This movie literally kept me on the edge of the seat and gasping on the violent and unexpected twists. Many a time a scene comes and you are left wondering 'what the hell just happened'. With hell lot of twists and surprises this movie keeps the action going on. There are no particular points along the time line where you are bored. Pure thriller from start to end. Also happy to see Danny Glover in action. all in all a must see. it deserves a rating more than 7.

I don't like to write reviews quoting the synopsis of a film, or give too much away. This film is a brilliant thriller with great twists. Nice setting, decent cast and great idea. Really enjoyed this movie after catching it on sony movies. Glad I pressed record.

Capsized
Prismark107 October 2017
Actor Barkhad Abdi is a person I would not want to be on the same boat as him.

Abdi plays a poor fisherman, Miguel who thinks his golden goose has dropped a golden egg when he finds Dr Kevin Riley (Eion Bailey) a heart surgeon on holiday in the Caribbean stranded on a broken down motorboat with his family and in desperate need for help.

After drifting for some days, his wife and son exhausted, Miguel seizes the opportunity to demand money from the Kevin. Then once the money has been transferred he leaves them all for dead fearing they would go to the police.

Kevin makes the search for his family and Miguel once he realises that the local police are no help.

This is another American in peril story abroad. The good doctor should had figured that there was no way the fisherman would release his family once he got the money. It really is a B movie, cheesy, the acting is rather wooden, Danny Glover is really too old to play a cop but it has some thrills but the plot is nonsensical.

Idiot.
stevenrobertson-9789928 February 2021
I'm sorry but what sort of an idiot takes his family with a small child miles and miles out to sea on a tiny boat with what is practically a lawnmower engine? Come on daddy let's visit treasure island? What a treasure he is. The rest seems inevitable.... it's a watch though even if the circumstances of the situation are shockingly avoidable.

What a nail biter!
Boristhemoggy15 February 2018
Well I expected this to be a 3rd rate B movie especially with Danny Glover being in it. But boy it really turned out to be a nail biting edge of the seat thriller. The pace could do with a slight tweak through better editing but that's only in a few parts really, the overall film is just excellent and not what I expected at all. Eion Bailey and Barkhad Abdi really shine in this film, both great actors with lots of presence and really they drive the movie forward. Lots of twists and turns and lots of anguish for the viewer along the way, if you like a really exciting thriller then this is one film you don't want to miss.

Some people have become too jaded...
deacon_blues-8863217 February 2023
Extortion is an excellent thriller and human interest story. But I fear that far too many reviewers have become too jaded to be entertained by such a story these days. I don't know what criteria they use to evaluate a film, but it must be completely foreign to my own criteria.

This film has a fine cast of actors who give entirely credible performances, a taut script that keeps you on the edge of your seat, great location shooting, adequate production value, and is just plain fun to watch!

So, unless you're one of those stuck up self proclaimed film snobs, ignore the negative reviews and enjoy the ride!

I sure did!

VIEWS ON FILM review of Extortion
burlesonjesse519 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not to be confused with 2015's Extraction and its similar poster, Extortion is my latest review. With its star in the making locales, its natural character acting, and its gnawing tension that may upset you, Extortion takes the ordinary family vacation and turns it into a plunging nightmare. After seeing this movie, you might want to take heed when hastily visiting the Caribbean. Also, you might wanna ride a jet ski as opposed to any other form of zipped buoyancy.

The plot of Extortion is fairly original despite the fact that it kinda nods towards films like Cast Away and 1997's Breakdown. As it begins, your hunch tells you that something really bad is about to happen. Extortion involves a doctor, his wife, and his young tyke of a son. This parentage gets more than they bargain for. Believe it. They go on a warm getaway, they decide to rent an old boat, and they become stranded on a deserted island. Then, a fisherman attempts to rescue them but wants a million dollars in return.

Directed with relentless verve by Phil Volken, Extortion doesn't indulge in cinematic gimmicks and moves at a decent clip. Volken has his flick play detective as the story goes off into many stirring directions. He uses overhead shots and some jittery camera-work. Overall, his method is just plain efficacious. His troupers don't let him down either. Eion Bailey plays with nerve-ending intensity, the protagonist doctor named Kevin Riley. And Barkhad Abdi who's more creepy here than he was in Captain Phillips, channels the antagonistic fisherman named Miguel Kaba.

Part thriller, part drama. and part psychological horror fare, Extortion shattered me and I'm sure it will shatter you too. Granted, it doesn't have a notable lead or a strong marketing ploy. And it's only being released in U.S. and in the Philippines. Regardless, this thing is still my pick for biggest movie surprise of 2017. It's cynical, frustrating, nasty, and harrowing. Heck, it's okay to get "blackmailed" into seeing Extortion. Rating: 3 and a half stars.

Silly and unrealistic story
nicholls_les12 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
One of the worst movies ever, If I could give zero I would. The plot, if I can call it that was so stupid I almost turned off but kept watching as it was so bad it was almost comical.

Just some plot holes were.

A supposedly intelligent Doctor stupidly rents a boat from a local, the boat has no Radio and he doesn't seem to think to take a mobile phone. He was so desperate to hire it because no Jet skis available, yet this is their first day at the resort and tomorrow would have been OK surely?

When telling the Police his family are on an Island they calculate a 150 mile radius as they say he was drifting for an hour, yet he had not drifted on his way to the Island and should have told them how far or at least how long he had traveled, narrowing the search

He stupidly allows his family stranded on the Island yet pays a high ransom before they are rescued. Duh!

He is taken by Miguel to a payphone to raise the money needed. He makes several calls but doesn't think to just run to the nearest Police station and get Miguel arrested.

Rather than cooperate with the Police he acts like a guilty criminal and tries to track the criminals down himself. This guy has no fighting skills but thinks he will be quite safe chasing hardened criminals in areas where he stands out as not local..

When finding Miguel's home, he bursts in with no plan. He tries to fight in order to force Miguel to take him to his family. Had he learned nothing from previous contact with this man? Why did he not phone the Police and tell then he had found Miguel? He manages to Kill Miguel, the man who knows where his family are. Great plan that.

He gets on a bus going nowhere particularly as if he has all the time in the world. Has he forgotten his family are stranded on an Island? But wait the other criminal just happens to be on the same bus... wow of course that could happen. Then this man gets knocked over on a quiet road by ta car that does not even break or sound the horn. This is a wide straight road and the driver would have seen him long before. The driver then acts as if nothing much has happened, he may have killed this man but stays around and even lifts the body into his truck. Oh and just before our hero says to the driver, 'I am taking your truck', yes he is such a tough guy that the driver will just let him?

When reaching to the island he finds his wife and son collapsed for some reason since they seem to have water with them, his son is not breathing so he saves his son by doing CPR. If his son was not breathing he would be dead unless he just happened to stop moments before his Father landed on the Island, oh yes very likely.

As for the very end, it was all left hanging up in the air. Did they live? Die? Was he arrested for the deaths he was involved in? All very very silly. There are many more plot holes and the acting is awful throughout. Danny Glover was cast as a Detective who has as much common sense as a slug.and he is way to old to play this part. Just why he or Eion Bailey or Barkhad Abdi agreed to star in this nonsense is a mystery. As is why some on here gave good reviews. Were they watching the same movie?

Is Treasue Island Real?
nogodnomasters2 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Kevin Riley (Eion Bailey) is the county hospital heart surgeon who can't fix his own lawn mower. So when he takes his family out for a boat ride, we already know he won't be able to fix it. They get help from Miguel (Barkhad Abdi) who extorts money from the doctor then leaves everyone for dead. Kevin manages to survive and the authorities (Danny Glover etc.) don't seem to be any help, thinking he planned the whole thing for the insurance money. Kevin conducts his own investigation to find his family...

Eion Baily is not Liam Neeson so when he gears up to go "walking tall" there is no adrenaline rush. A doctor who can't fix a lawn mower has zero MacGyver potential too. He is not a former SEAL or special operative, just a guy. Danny Glover has a role smaller than his billing, meaning they can't sell the film on it's own merits. Low energy.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Don't believe the haters! The movie is great!
russellbuddhism3 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly I have no idea why so many people think badly of this movie, which is actually very entertaining. Yes I know there are parts of the story that are too coincidental(car accident) and stupid (why would you go sailing for 3 hours under the burning sun without a phone or water?? Also correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you can eat tree leaves for water when you get stuck in a deserted island??)The rest of the movie is just great, troubles/twists one after another, making the story compact and tense. I really enjoyed it!

it has an entertaining value.
smithellie196617 May 2017
This movie is just OK. The story is noting special, lots of barely believable scenes on which I had to "close" my eyes. I would have expected more from Kevin, an American doctor, in terms of being if not smart, but at least having some brains not to get his family into a potentially dangerous situation, which ended up being disastrous. I am assuming that doctors do have some intellect outside of their medical practices. Now about acting. It was just satisfactory and at times Eion Bailey completely fails to deliver emotions expected from a distraught and desperate father and husband whose family is on a brink of survival. They say that eyes don't lie and it is through eyes we express out emotions, not from a face scrunching ( Will Smith and J.Aniston have never figured this out), so in few scenes where Kevin's agony should have reached an apogee, his eyes remain absolutely calm. I should probably mention that he did manage to pull some emotions in some scenes, but as a whole, his performance was uneven. All other actors did not occupy the screen for long enough to rate their performances, but I would say that no one had impressed me. It is not a bad film, I still recommend to see it, for it has an entertaining value.

Unrealistic movie
bursuc_valentin20082 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly i want to say that this is my first IMDb review, and English isn't my native language, so please excuse me if i make grammar mistakes.

I personally can't understand how such an awful scenario for this movie was approved. It is full of mistakes that in real life would never happen. I watched it just because of Barkhad Abdi acting in the movie.

Spoiler alert from now on !!!

In this review i will try to explain why this movie was so bad for me.

  • In the beginning of the movie, when the family arrives on the island, the father rush to rent a jet ski to ride with his kid. When he is told all the jet skis are already rented he does a desperate move renting a boat from a local man, like he was in his last day of the vacation.

  • Another thing that it seems weird to me, is that the boat has no radio station so you can emit an S.O.S. if needed. The biggest thing that i can't understand is the lack of cell phone on the family. Like really? No camera, no phone, no nothing when you go on a vacantion ?? A GPS on a phone would resolve so many things...

  • Throughout the movie Kevin Riley is seen wearing a watch. From the moment he wakes up in the boat took by Miguel he can look at the time and calculate how much time was until they arrived at the harbor. This information would narrow the search area for the police.

  • He is taken by Miguel to a payphone to raise the money needed. He is shown calling multiple persons. From where did he get the numbers? Highly improbable that he would memorate all that numbers.

  • When he is left to drawn in the boat, the wood walls are old and frail so it is hard to believe that a strong man cannot put a hole in those.

  • Highly improbable that the crossbow would trigger when put down gently.

  • He escapes the hospital very easy, running with a fresh wound.

  • Jorge get's run over by somebody right in the middle of the road, with no brakes, no nothing.

  • With he's dying powers Jorge points a island to a map he barely seen (Kevin has three maps, but when Jorge opens his eyes he has the correct one in the hand) and is for the first time he is seen them.

  • Again with a fresh wound Kevin runs for the nearest harbor but with just minutes ago he cannon run for more than a few meters.

  • When refueling the boat the contor on the fuel pump run very slowly, but in the next shot it goes very fast, filling the 1200 litres fuel tank in just under a minute.

  • When reaching to the island he miraculously saves his son life by doing cardiac massage (manage to get there just when his heart stops beating...)

If all this doesn't convince you that this is a bad movie i don't know what to say more.
