Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Although it's nearly 4 hours before game time, Pete LaCock digs into the batter's box in a hushed Royals stadium. With perspiration already rolling down an intense face, he slashes a curving drive in the left field corner of the empty ballpark. Another swing rockets a pitch on one hop off the right field wall and then a smooth left-handed stroke pushes a sinking liner into centerfield. The scene is a daily ritual for LaCock and a host of Royals who arrive early to squeeze in swing after swing in the batting cage. For LaCock, the reason behind the extra work is a simple one. When the time comes, Pete LaCock the pinch hitter, Pete LaCock the designated hitter, Pete LaCock the outfield and Pete LaCock the first baseman all want to be ready. Whatever the role, the Royals' popular jack-of-all-trades doesn't want to be short changed." - The Salina Journal (Salina, Kansas, July 1, 1977, "Pete LaCock has become man of many talents for Royals," Page 17)
