Description

In this quirky arcade game, you play Duncan the penguin, who enjoys skating on thin ice--especially around the other penguins. The goal of this game is exactly that: to skate around the other penguins, dunking them into the frigid water while consuming tasty shrimp cocktails (to make him go faster). Duncan has to watch out for the evil seal and polar bear, who both like to bat Duncan about! If you can manage to sink all the penguins, you move onto the next level--where even more penguins await to be dunked.

Trivia

An Olympic connection

Intellivision's marketing department spent a lot of money to become an official sponsor of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. Having done so they realized that they did not have a Winter Olympic game to sell so Thin Ice became Voochko On Ice, Voochko the wolf being the game's mascot.

Inspiration

Thin Ice was based on the 1982 Data East arcade game Disco No. 1.

Music

This was the first game to have a soundtrack by legendarily-prolific composer George Alistair "the Fat Man" Sanger, a hook-up facilitated by his being roommates with the brother of Blue Sky Ranger David Warhol (here credited with "Sound Effects/Additional Music").

In honor of this humble beginning, in 2000 the Fat Man composed and performed a surf arrangement of the theme to this game, "Surfin’ on Thin Ice."
