Creating a book cover for KDP is a straightforward and enjoyable process. Let’s jump on in and break each step down for you:

Step 1: Choose Your Book Size

Before you begin designing your book cover for KDP on Canva, your first step is to decide on your book size, which is also referred to as trim size. Ultimately, the size of your book is really up to you.

To make sure your book appeals to your target readers, it’s a good idea to do some research. Check out the sizes of successful books in your genre on Amazon. This helps you understand what your readers expect and what’s working well for other authors.

For the sake of this tutorial, we will be creating an 8.5″x11″ book cover.

Step 2: Determine Your Book Cover Dimensions

Once you have chosen your book cover size that best suits your book, you will need to go to the Amazon KDP Cover Calculator to determine the exact dimensions you need to create your cover.

This is an essential step because it will help to ensure that your book cover dimensions align with the requirements set by Amazon KDP for a smooth publishing process.

You will need to enter your book’s information into the cover calculator. The image above is an example that you can follow. You can use a different interior type or paper type if you would like, but I always stick to black & white interior type and white paper type.

Be sure that you enter the page count that you will be including in your book. After you enter all of your book’s information, click on the “calculate dimensions” button at the bottom of the page.

As shown in the image above, we will enter the full cover dimensions into Canva to begin creating our book cover. Before we begin designing our cover, you need to click on the “download template” button.

Once your cover template is downloaded, you will need to click on the downloaded template and extract the file because we will be adding the png file to Canva in the next step.

Step 3: Format Your Book Cover Canvas in Canva

To start formatting your book cover for KDP, you need to head on over to Canva. If you do not already have a Canva account, you can either sign up for a free account or sign up for a free trial of the Canva Pro plan.

The free and Pro plan both offer a wide selection of templates, fonts, graphics, and features, but the Pro plan provides a larger selection.

Once you are signed up to Canva ,log in. From the Canva homepage, you will need to click on the blue “create a design” button that is in the top right of the screen. A pop up box will appear, you will then click on “custom size.”

The first thing you will need to do is change “px” to “in” as demonstrated in the image above. Next, you need to enter the full cover dimensions that you were given from the Amazon KDP cover calculator, and click on the “create a new design” button.

You now have a blank canvas that is the correct dimensions for the trim size that you chose for your book. Before you can start designing your cover, you need to add your cover template to your canvas. There are 2 methods to do this:

First, you need to click on the upload tab in Canva that is located on the left side bar.

1. You can click the blue “upload files” button, and then click on the png file.
2. You can locate your file in the download file, and then drag and drop the cover template into the upload area inside of Canva.

To add the cover template to your blank canvas, click on the image that you uploaded into Canva and snap it into the top left corner and drag it to the bottom right corner. Be sure that it is positioned just as displayed in the image above.

After positioning your book cover template, be sure to click on the icon of the lock that is right above your canvas to lock it in place.

Step 4: Design Your Book Cover for KDP

It is now time to start designing a book cover for KDP that will resonate with your potential customers. The first thing you will want to do is decide which patterns, graphics, and texts you will be using in your book cover design.

You have a wide range of images, fonts, and graphics available in Canva. Beyond Canva, you can explore platforms like Creative Fabrica, Envato Elements, Design Cuts, and Vecteezy. You can also create your own AI art for your book covers using platforms like Midjourney.

Make sure to carefully review the licensing information and any restrictions for the images, fonts, or graphics you select. It’s important to understand the usage rights and any limitations before incorporating them into your project.

In this tutorial, I’ve picked out a sunflower pattern from Creative Fabrica. When I upload it to Canva, I’ll place it on my canvas and adjust its size to 5″x5″ by clicking and dragging one of its corners.

Duplicate the 5″x5″ pattern, ensure that the white and red is fully cover, and that your each pattern is perfectly aligned.

It’s time to add in our text and a text box, but before we can begin, you will need to position your Amazon KDP cover template to the front of the canvas. To do this, following these quick and easy steps:

1. Click on the “position” button at the top of the Canva screen
2. Ensure that you are under the “layers” tab
3. Locate the KDP cover template, click on the 3 dots in that box
4. Go to “layers” and then click “bring to front”

Your Amazon KDP cover template will be at the front of your canvas. Now, you can customize your book cover design for KDP without any concerns about exceeding the safe zone.

Choose 2-3 fonts for your book cover title, subtitle, brief description of your book, and your name or pen name. To keep things simple, I will only be using 2 fonts for this Prayer Journal tat I am going to be publishing.

You can also add additional elements or icons that may resonate with your potential customers.

Once your cover is designed to your liking, it is safe to delete the book cover template from your canvas.

Step 5: Download Your Design

Once you are satisfied with the final look of your book cover, download it as a pdf file. Here are the steps to download your book cover for kdp as a pdf file:

1. Click on the gray “share” button that is located at te top of the page in Canva.
2. Scroll down to download
3. Under file type, choose “pdf print”
4. Click on the “Download” button

By following these steps, you are one step book successfully on KDP. The effort you put into making your book cover stand out will really make a difference in your sales.

Step 6: Upload Your Book Cover to KDP
