Re: An Tábhairne Réaltrach

One of your own, yes? “The Galactic Bartender,” indeed.
I know the opening line from an old rag but can’t quite put a name to it.
Does it have anything to do with Irish sessions?

Cantina Band from Star Wars

“Mad About Me”, composed by John Williams for the Cantina Scene.
Very Cool!

Re: An Tábhairne Réaltrach

Ah. So yet another tune that has nothing to do with Irish traditional music or Irish sessions. 🙁

Shame there isn’t a website dedicated to Figrin D’an compositions….

Would it kill you to have a little fun once in a while?

Re: An Tábhairne Réaltrach

“Would it kill you to have a little fun once in a while?”

That presumes you have to play movie score tunes and ABBA covers to have “fun.”

You can’t imagine the fun I have, and have had, in 50 years of playing tunes, of sharing trad tunes with friends at sessions.

Re: An Tábhairne Réaltrach

…we ARE the new makers of traditional tunes - for musicians 2oo years from now.
BUT… says right up front on the home page:
“The Session is a community website dedicated to Irish traditional music.”

Re: An Tábhairne Réaltrach

ELCBK, I have no trouble with new tunes—I’ve posted a number of more recent compositions from musicians like Mick McAuley and Jim Murray. As long as they’re recognizably within the tradition, even if they stretch the edges, that’s how this music grows and stays alive.

I also get that many sessions are fairly inclusive of other styles of music. I’ve joined in on bluegrass, Appalachian, and Country-Western tunes and songs at sessions in Ireland and elsewhere. But the core of those sessions was still Irish trad.

Mad About Me is just a cute gimmick of a melody for a scene in a Hollywood sci-fi flick, written by someone who has no relevance whatsoever to Irish trad or sessions. It has absolutely no connection to this music, or to sessions, and in 200 years it will have even less.

Your quote from this site’s home page is my main point.

It’s beyond me why some people feel the need to clutter up this site, “dedicated to Irish traditional music,” with random chaff from other genres that aren’t part of the trad heritage. If someone wants to play movie music or video game themes at their session, that’s their prerogative. As a one off, it can be a bit of craic. But that’s it. If people want to post irrelevant music here, they can fill up their profile pages with it and leave the tune database alone.

Imagine how well it would be received if we all decamped to thestringquartet.org jazztrios.net and started posting polkas, jigs, and barndances.

Re: An Tábhairne Réaltrach

Can tunes members want to share (of other genres) be posted on a submitter’s profile page?
Has Jeremy ever made any suggestions?
Hmmm… https://thesession.org/tunes/2399 (4 Minutes 33 Seconds mazurka) is STILL viewable… but I refuse to be the Tune Police. 🤣
