Nazi edgelordism was the fashion at the time. Siouxsie Sioux and Sid Vic wore swastikas, Bowie did the salute in public, etc.

They weren't being "edgelordy" though, they had no expectation or desire to cause  offence or get a reaction, unlike swastika wearing punk stuff.
