ATLANTA, GA -- Lucas Taylor scored a career-high 28 points and Jay'Den Turner pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Georgia State to a dominating 90-62 win over Georgia Southern before 3,152 fans at the GSU Convocation Center Saturday.
Georgia State (9-7, 4-1) won its third straight game and fifth of the last six to improve to 4-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, and the Panthers sit in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings.
The Panthers had four players score in double figures, led by Taylor, who went 11-for-16 from the field, including 5-for-6 on 3-pointers. Toneari Lane added 18 points and six rebounds, Dwon Odom contributed 15 points and nine assists, and Leslie Nkereuwem went 7-for-7 from field for 14 points, along with seven rebounds.
Georgia State improved to 14-7 against Georgia Southern (2-15, 2-3 Sun Belt) in the Sun Belt era, and the Panthers have won 14 of the last 17 games against in the Eagles in Atlanta. The 28-point victory equals Georgia State's largest margin of victory in the series; the Panthers' also earned a 28-point win in 1980.
"First I want to acknowledge our crowd and especially our student section. It was a lively a crowd as we've had since we've been here," head coach Jonas Hayes said. "Keep showing up because you give our guys so much energy.
"I thought our guys brought our fight from the beginning. I couldn't be more proud of our group."
Georgia Southern scored the first five points of the game, but from there, the Panthers took control, building a 14-point lead midway through the first half before taking a 42-32 lead into the locker room. The Eagles scored the first three points of the second half to pull within seven points, but Georgia State quickly responded. Taylor scored six straight points to ignite a 15-4 run as the Panthers built a 57-39 lead just four minutes into the second half and then cruised to the win.
Georgia State shot 54.5 percent from the field while holding Georgia Southern to 34.2 percent, including only 28 percent in the second half. The Panthers also dominated the boards with a 44-31 rebounding advantage.Â
