The Phil Mickelson-Josh Allen love affair runs deeper than we thought

November 01, 2021

Josh Allen paid Phil Mickelson the biggest compliment possible on Sunday when he dressed as the six-time major champ for Halloween. Seriously, is there a higher form of flattery? Also, kudos to Allen for being about the only person who didn't dress as Ted Lasso this year.

In any event, Allen showed up to Sunday's game against the Dolphins in a golf shirt and shoes, a metal coffee container in hand, and flashing thumbs ups. The star QB even went the extra mile with a visor from this year's PGA Championship at Kiawah, where Mickelson became the oldest major champ—and one of the biggest winning underdogs—in history. Check it out:

And Mickelson quickly took note of the costume:

Aww, how cute. We have a cross-sport, cross-generation bromance on our hands. But wait! There's more!

After Allen led the Bills to a 26-11 victory, he credited Mickelson for a second half turnaround by citing a video call he made to the team in the preseason.

"It was right after he won the PGA and he was right there with his trophy and the golf cart," Allen told reporters after. "He was on the golf course, and he took about 30 minutes to talk to the team and it was really cool. I think it’s just self-knowledge, understanding who you are. I know I don’t play well when I’m frustrated, and again, hearing that from a Hall of Fame golfer, one of the best of all time, to say that type of thing, that resonated well with me, because that’s exactly kind of how I feel, too. It helped me today and hopefully it’ll help me in the future, too."

That's really cool of Phil. Provided he wasn't holding up the entire golf course for those 30 minutes, of course.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott added this:

"Josh Allen and Phil Mickelson have fun back and forth going," he said. "Phil spoke to our team earlier this season, and it was such a special moment for us to have."

And Mickelson was quick to reply on Twitter:

Again, very cool. But it also raises an obvious question: How much did Phil bet on Buffalo to win the Super Bowl this season?

Regardless, look out, rest of the NFL. The Bills—and Phil—are coming for you.
