Everything you need to know about the Doha Metro in 2024

From ticket prices to routes and tips for your journey, consider this your ultimate guide

Since opening in 2019, the Doha Metro has taken Qatar’s public transportation up a notch, serving millions of passengers as a safe and reliable mode of transport.

In a way, the Doha Metro has become a tourist attraction, thanks to its plush design, uber-modern stations and comfortable rides. It’s also one of the best ways to see Qatar, with most stations strategically located around popular attractions.

During the FIFA World Cup 2022, Doha Metro served 17.4 million passengers, who used the service to get to the matches. The Asian Cup Qatar 2023, during January 12 to February, was also a showstopper for transport, with more than 6.46 million passengers using both the Metro and the Lusial Tram to get about.

There’s never been a better time to say goodbye to surcharge fares in taxis or getting stuck in traffic – the Doha Metro gets you where you need to go quickly (and for less!).

If you’ve not hopped on board before, read on for our complete guide.

There are two classes of travel on the Doha Metro: standard and goldclub. Commuters using the standard or family carriages will be charged QR2 per journey, with a maximum daily cost of QR6, no matter how many times you use it in a single day.

The goldclub card is priced at QR10 per journey, with a daily cap of QR30.

There is also a limited use travel pass that allows for a day pass or a single journey use for standard and goldclub travel. These are not reusable and perfect for a one-off experience on the Doha Metro.

Kids aged five and above will need a travel card, with fares priced the same for both children and adults. Children aged nine and above can use the Doha Metro alone, but those under this age must be accompanied by someone over the age of 16.

Where can I buy a travel card for the Doha Metro?

Standard travel cards are available at vending machines in all metro stations, as well as from five licensed retailers: Al Meera, Carrefour, Family Food Centre, Jumbo Electronics and Lulu Hypermarket.

You can also order your metro card through Talabat Mart and have it delivered straight to your door. Cost of the Standard card is QR10 when you first purchase it and can be topped up when you run low on credit.

If you’re looking to buy a goldclub card, you’ll need to pay a visit to the goldclub offices in one of the Doha Metro stations. These cards are priced at QR100 each upon first purchase.

You can top up your metro card at the vending machines at the stations, or online by visiting qr.com.qa/top-up. You can also download the free Qatar Rail app from Google Play or App Store and maintain your account here. The app also allows you to view your journey history and offers updated information on services.

What are the different carriages available on the Doha Metro?

Every train on the Doha Metro has three types of carriages: standard, gold, and family. Anyone can travel in the standard carriages, but you must have a goldclub card to use the gold ones.

How can I get to the Doha Metro?

A Doha Metrolink bus

To make the metro network as accessible as possible, there are two different free services you can use to reach stations in Doha.

The metrolink is a feeder bus network that reaches customers between two and five kilometers away from stations. Buses serve areas including The Pearl-Qatar, Doha Festival City and Lusail Marina, with service frequency ranging between every six minutes and 20 minutes. You can find the full network route on the Qatar Rail website by clicking here.

While the metrolink buses are free you’ll need your Doha Metro & Lusail Travel Card to tap in and out for your journey. You can also use the Karwa Smart Card or QR code from the Karwa Journey Planner App for free rides.

If you’re not on one of the metrolink routes, you can instead use the metroexpress. The ride-sharing service can be ordered on-demand through the Karwa taxi app, and sits up to seven people per ride in branded vans.

The metroexpress service is exclusive for registered metro or tram passengers and can only be used in conjunction with a metro or tram journey. Use it to get to ten metro stations, six on the Red Line, two on each of the Gold and Green lines and seven Lusail tram stations.

Alternatively, Karwa app users can get a 20 percent discount on their rides to any metro station by using the code RAIL while booking.

The metrolink bus network operates from:

  • Sun-Wed: 5.30am-11.59pm
  • Thu: 5.30am-1am
  • Fri: 2pm-1am
  • Sat: 6am-11.59pm
