A few Details on Schleswig - Holstein

The area of southern Jutland to the Elb was 1544 divided into the two duchies Schleswig and Holstein and given out to the three brothers: Adolf got Gottorp Castle, see Gottorp genealogy. King Christian III gave the area of Haderslev to his brother Hans the Elder = Johann der Ältere, and the king kept Sønderborg for himself. Hans the Elder died without leaving heirs in 1580 and his part was divided between Adolf and the two sons of Christian III: Hans the Younger (A01) and King Frederik II.

By the distribution of the estate after King Christian III in 1564 Hans t.Y. got Sønderborg and he called himself Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sønderborg and became the founder of the Glückborg lines, Augustenburg, Sønderborg, Nordborg, Ærø and the Plön lines.

He inherited Ryd Monastery which had been abandoned since the reformation; and Hans built Glücksburg Castle on the spot and partly with materials from the monastery.

In 1621 Hans the Younger drew up his will and his sons all inherited a part:
   Christian (A01-2) got Ærø;
   Alexander (A01-4) got Sønderborg;
   Hans Adolf (A01-7) got Nordborg;
   Philip (A01-13) got Glücksborg;
   Joachim Ernst (B02a- and N04-07) got Plön;

Hans Adolf died without heirs and Nordborg went to King Frederik II and when Christian died without heirs Ærø was divided in four and one part went to each of the other four duchies.

The Sønderborg line
When Alexander (B01) died, his sons agreed against further splitting of the duchy and the primogeniture rule was introduced. The dukes had economically hard times and after the Swedish-Danish War 1657-1660 the Sønderborg Duchy went bankrupt and the fief returned to King Frederik III. The Sønderborg line became extinct 1709;

Augustenborg line
Alexander's third son, Ernst Günther (B02) bought some property on Als and built the first castle named after his wife. The family increased their possessions but did never gain a dukedom on their estates. After the 1848-1850 war with Prussia they left their etstates in Schleswig and moved to Schlesien, Primkenau, and a daughter from this line was married to the Prussian emperor Wilhelm II (1859-1941) and the line became extinct 1931.

Glücksborg line
Alexander owned the etstate of Beck in the diocese of Minden in Westphalia and it went to Alexander's fourth son August Philip (H01) in 1646 and he and his descendants called themselves Dukes of Slesvig-Holsten-Sønderborg-Beck.

The older Glücksburg line became extinct in 1779, the last ruler was Duke Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm (A07). After his death the duchy returned to the Danish Crown, but the widow Anna Caroline lived in the castle until she died in 1824.

The ownership of the castle was however in 1825 transferred to Duke William = Wilhelm von Schleswig-Holstein-Sønderburg-Beck (H06). Wilhelm's younger son, Christian, married King Christian VIII's sister's daughter, Louise of Hessen, and was elected Danish king as Christian IX from 1863, when King Frederik VII died at Glückburg 15 November 1863.

In 1864 Denmark was forced to hand over Schleswig and Holstein to Prussia. The Prussian King, Wilhelm I, gave the castle to Christian IX's brother Duke Carl (H07). His descendants are still masters of the castle. The title of duke became extinct with the death of Duke Peter (H12) in 1980. His son, Prince Christoph, is the present head of the house.
